The fracture characteristics and tool life of ceramics and WC, CBN cutting tool when turning heat treated steel STD11($H_RC$ 60) were investigated experimentally to clarify the machinability and optimum tool materials in cutting of difficult-to-cut material with high hardness. Forthermore, the behaviors of the tool wear and failure were examined with regard to cutting force. The hardened steel wore the cutting tool edge rapidily and increased the cutting forces, especially radial force. The tool was worn by the abrasive action. Flank Weat of $Al_2O_3-TiC$ ceramic and WC tool become relatively large and CBN & $Al_2O_3$, ceramic tool had a long life among the tool materials tested. The tool fracture patterns were just like minor cutting wear, flank wear, crater wear, notch wear, chipping. Flank wear rate was accelerated by occurrence of chipping. During the proceeding of machining, it was possible to foresee the catastrophic fracture of tool by abrupt increase of radial force.

In this study, the biological response of fetal rat calvarial cells on alkali- and heat-treated titanium was assessed. The results were as follows; Cell proliferation on alkali- and heat-treated surfaces showed significantly higher level than on the titanium-6aluminum-4vanadium (weight percentage: 6 % aluminum, 4 % vanadium, Ti-6Al-4V) surface (p<0.01). In ELISA analysis, concentration of $IL-1{\beta}$ and IL-6 were raised when the cells were grown to day 7. Pre-treatment with herbimycin, a known tyrosine kinase inhibitor, suppressed the production of IL-6 (p<0.01). In comparison to commercially pure titanium (grade II, cp-Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V alloy, alkali- and heat-treated titanium enhanced alkaline phosphatase activity (p<0.001). In RT-PCR analysis, alkaline phosphatase, bone sialoprotein, receptor activated nuclear factor ligand mRNA expression was increased alkali- and heat-treated titanium. Herbimycin and SB203580, p38 MAPK inhibitor, were repressed of $IL-1{\beta}-induced$ IL-6 mRNA expression. These results suggest that alkali- and heat-treated titanium stimulate osteoblasts differentiation and facilitate bone remodeling.

The viscosity of foam metal is necessary to get the pores, but it is difficult to manufacture net-shape foam, because the fluidity decreases by increasing viscosity. In this study, the A356 alloy which has good fluidity and less defect was selected and fabricated to foam metal. To understand about effect of thickening agent on foaming and mechanical properties, quantity of thickening agent was changed. The pore size, porosity and distribution of foam metal were measured by i-solution program. And compression test were performed by UTM. In case of 3.0wt% Ca in thickening agent, it is found that most of foam consist of homogeneous shape, and the growth height had the highest value of 204 mm in the all fabricated foams. The porosity was 93% and compressive strength was 3.1 MPa. In the microstructure, the $Al_2Si_2Ca$ intermetallic compound and Ti were observed. The vickers hardness value rose with increasing viscosity value.
This study addresses evaluation of performance of hardening model for a titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) based on the artificial neural network (ANN) regarding the strain rate and the temperature. Uniaxial compression tests were carried out at different strain rates from 0.001 /s to 10 /s and temperatures from 575 ℃ To 975 ℃. Using the experimental data, ANN models were trained and tested with different hyperparameters, such as size of hidden layer and optimizer. The input features were determined with the equivalent plastic strain, strain rate, and temperature while the output value was set to the equivalent stress. When the number of data is sufficient with a smooth tendency, both the Bayesian regulation (BR) and the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) show good performance to predict the flow behavior. However, only BR algorithm shows a predictability when the number of data is insufficient. Furthermore, a proper size of the hidden layer must be confirmed to describe the behavior with the limited number of the data.

Failure analyses of the screws in spinal fixation devices were carried out. The fractured screws were retrieved from a patient who had spinal surgery in the thoracic vertebrae from number 10 to 15. The failure occurred one month after the removal of the braces. Microstructures and fracture surfaces were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The microstructures of the screws corresponded to annealed Ti-6Al-4V bar. However, in the vicinity of the screw surface, there was an insufficient number of fine precipitates. Fracture surfaces showed typical fatigue failure modes. Regarding the fact that no machining defects were detected, fatigue crack initiation might have been caused by the lack of precipitates near the screw surfaces. Only the fourth of five fixed screws was severely stress-concentrated by the action of the spinal bones, while the stress of the 4th screw was decreased to half of its acceptable level when the screw was supplemented by one more, which might have been fixed in the 6th vertebra under the 5th position by the switching of its position. The stress simulation was conducted by ANSYS with 3D CAD of PRO/E in order to understand the stress concentration behavior and to provide an effective spinal surgery guide.

PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of atmospheric plasma (APL) versus conventional surface treatments on the adhesion of self-adhesive resin cement to Ti-6Al-4V alloy. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixty plates of machined titanium (Ti) discs were divided into five groups (n=12): 1) Untreated (CNT); 2) Sandblasted (SAB); 3) Tribochemically treated (ROC); 4) Tungsten CarbideBur (TCB); 5) APL treated (APL). SEM analysis and surface roughness (Ra) measurements were performed. Self-adhesive resin cement was bonded to the Ti surfaces and shear bond strength (SBS) tests, Ra and failure mode examinations were carried out. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and chi-squared test. RESULTS. The lowest SBS value was obtained with CNT and was significantly different from all other groups except for APL. The ROC showed the highest SBS and Ra values of all the groups. CONCLUSION. It was concluded that the effect of APL on SBS and Ra was not sufficient and it may not be a potential for promoting adhesion to titanium.
Inclusions in Ti investment castings are generally known to have detrimental effects on the performance of the castings. However, actual inclusions are infrequent and hard to be located. As a result, it is extremely difficult to obtain sufficient amount of fatigue test specimens of titanium investment castings having inclusions in the gage section. Thus, in-depth research of the adverse influence of inclusions is also hindered. To address this problem, a new casting methodology of specimens containing hard alpha inclusions was developed in this study. To guarantee successful introduction of an inclusion and casting, a carefully designed mold with 8 legs and a special tool were employed. After solidification, castings were cut, and X-ray radiography determined that the inclusions were successfully incorporated into the castings. The castings were further prepared to obtain multiple test specimens and they were fatigue-tested consecutively. Fractography analysis confirmed that fatigue cracks initiated at the hard alpha inclusion. In a nonlinear regression model, the fatigue life can be modeled as an exponential function with a negative exponent of the cross-sectional area of an inclusion. The fatigue life of Ti specimens containing inclusions is inversely proportional to the cross-sectional area of an inclusion.

Statement of problem: The adhesion between titanium and ceramic is less optimal than conventional metal-ceramic bonding, due to reaction layer form on cast titanium surface during porcelain firing. Purpose: This study characterized the effect of titanium-ceramic adhesion after gold and TiN coating on cast and wrought titanium substrates. Material and method: Six groups of ASTM grade II commercially pure titanium and cast titanium specimens$(13mm{\times}13mm{\times}1mm)$ were prepared(n=8). The conventional Au-Pd-In alloy served as the control. All specimens were sandblasted with $110{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3$ particles and ultrasonically cleaned for 5min in deionized water and dried in air before porcelain firing. An ultra-low-fusing dental porcelain (Vita Titankeramik) was fused on titanium surfaces. Porcelain was debonded by a biaxial flexure test at a cross head speed of 0.25mm/min. The excellent titanium-ceramic adherence was exhibited by the presence of a dentin porcelain layer on the specimen surface after the biaxial flexure test. Area fraction of adherent porcelain (AFAP) was determined by SEM/EDS. Numerical results were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls test at ${\alpha}=0.05$. Results: The AFAP value of cast titanium was greatest in the group 2 with TiN coating, followed by group 1 with Au coating and the group 3 with $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting. Significant statistical difference was found between the group 1, 2 and the group 3 (p<.05). The AFAP value of wrought titanium was greatest in the group 5 with TiN coating, followed by the group 4 with Au coating and the group 6 with $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting. Conclusion: No significant difference was observed among the three groups (p>.05). The AFAP values of the cast titanium and the wrought titanium were similar. However the group treated with $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting showed significantly lower value (p<.05).
TiC particulate reinforced magnesium matrix composites were fabricated by melt stirring method. The effect of alloying elements on TiC particulate dispersion into molten magnesium and mechanical properties were investigated. The incorporation time is defined as the time required for dispersion of solid particles into molten metal. The incorporation time of TiC particles into molten pure magnesium was remarkably shorter and the particulated dispersion was more uniform than that of pure aluminum which was reported previously. The incorporation time was, prolonged by the addition of Al, Bi, Ca, Ce, Pb, Sn or Zn. The tensile strength increased and elongation decreased by the addition of Cu or Sn into the matrices and composites. Although, the tensile strength of the matrices and composites increased by alloying with Ca or Ce, the maximum elongation was observed at a content of about 1% for the matrices. By alloying with Zn, the tensile strength increased for the matrices and composites, but the elongation of the matrices increased. The pure magnesium and its alloy matrix composites reinforced with 20vol% TiC have the tensile strength of about 400MPa. This value is compared with the tensile strength of SiC whisker reinforced magnesium matrix composites fabricated by liquid infiltration method at the same volume fraction. There fore, the melt strirring method which has the advantages of simple process is considered to be efficient in fabricating magnesium matrix composites.
