The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of process parameter on alpha-case formation of Ti and TiAl castings. The previous studies showed that the molten titanium is excessively reactive to the refractory oxide mold, resulting in alpha-caes of the titanium castings regardless of composition of titanium alloys. However, the behavior of the alpha-case formation of TiAl alloy is not consistent with conventional titanium alloy. In order to investigate the alpha-case formation of Ti and TiAl castings with process parameter, especially the associated factors of investment mold such as mold material, binder and mold preheating temperature. An attempt has been made to characterize the alpha-case of titanium casting by using optical microscope, EDS, XRD, EMPA and hardness profiles. The formation of the alpha-case on the surface of pure titanium during investment casting was rather by that of solid solution with metallic element from mold material. The required mold strength was obtained with $CaZrO_3$ because of the possibility of using water soluble binder. However, the separation phenomenon between facing and back-up mold materials should be considered. The interfacial reaction of TiAl alloy showed different behavior from that of pure titanium and $Al_2O_3$ was best mold materials. The effect of binder as well as mold material on the formation of alpha-case was significant.

In order to improve the low wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, plasma carburization treatment was newly carried out without consumption of its good specific strength and fatigue life over the temperature. Effect of the plasma carburization was analyzed and compared with the non-treated alloy by microstructural observation, structure characterization and mechanical property test. The plasma treated alloy formed a carburized layer of about 150$\mu\textrm{m}$ in depth from the surface, where a fine and hard particles of TiC and $V_4C_3$ were homogeneously dispersed through the layer. It was also found that an increase of the wear resistance, fatigue life and hardness, due to the hard and fine dispersoids.
A study was made to investigate the microstructure and the mechanical properties of low-carbon steel, Al-Mg alloy and Ti-6Al-4V alloy each representing bcc, fcc and hcp crystal structures, respectively fabricated by equal-channel angular(ECA) pressing. After a series of ECA pressings was performed, most grains were significantly refined below ${\mu}m$ in diameter with high mis-orientation of grain boundaries irrespective of different crystal structure used. Regarding the strain hardening capability, tensile tests of ultrafine grain (UFG) dual-phase (ferrite/martensite) steel which was different from UFG ferrite-pearlite steel were carried out at ambient temperature, and corresponding mechanical properties were discussed in relation to modified C-J analysis. Low-temperature and/or high strain-rate superplasticity of the UFG Al-Mg alloy and UFG Ti-6Al-4V alloy were also studied. Based on the analysis used in this study, it was concluded that UFG alloys exhibited the enhanced mechanical properties as compared to coarse-grained (CG) counterparts.
The theoretical optimum quaternary composition for improving the thermal stability of Al-Ti alloy was recently proposed. On the basis of the suggestion, quaternary Al-Ti-V-Zr alloy powders corresponding to the optimum compositions, one of which belongs to the region of the smallest lattice misfit between the matrix and the precipitates and the other belongs to the region of the smallest rate constant of coarsening, were prepared by mechanical alloying and the powders were vacuum-hot-pressed at $430^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 800 MPa. The thermal stability of the specimens was evaluated by hardness testing after isothermal aging up to 400 hrs at various temperatures. The decrease of hardness of Al-Ti-V-Zr alloys was smaller than that of Al-Ti alloys. It was considered to be due to the formation of $Al_3Zr$ type and$Al_3Ti$ type quaternary precipitates having smaller lattice misfit than $Al_3Ti$ and the increase of volume fraction of All0v during the isothermal aging. The quaternary Al-Ti-V-Zr alloys corresponding to the smallest lattice misfit showed the most improved thermal stablilty and it was mainly considered to be due to the formation of All0v.
Nb-doped $TiO_2$(NTO) coated NiCrAl alloy foam for hydrogen production is prepared using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis deposition(USPD) method. To optimize the size and distribution of NTO particles based on good physical and chemical stability, we synthesize particles by adjusting the weight ratio of the Nb precursor solution(5 wt%, 10 wt% and 15 wt%). The morphological, chemical bonding, and structural properties of the NTO coated NiCrAl alloy foam are investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy(XPS), and Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy(FESEM). As a result, the samples of controlled Nb weight ratio exhibit a common diffraction pattern at ${\sim}25.3^{\circ}$, corresponding to the(101) plane, and have chemical bonding(O-Nb=O) at 534 eV. The NTO particles with the optimum weight ratio of N (10 wt%) show a uniform distribution with a size of ~18.2-21.0 nm. In addition, they exhibit the highest corrosion resistance even in the electrochemical stability estimation. As a result, the introduction of NTO coated NiCrAl alloy foam by USPD improves the chemical stability of the NiCrAl alloy foam by protecting the direct electrochemical reaction between the foam and the electrolyte. Thus, the optimized NTO coating can be proposed for excellent protection of NiCrAl alloy foam for hydrocarbon-based steam methane reforming(SMR).
Compression tests were carried out to investigate the hot-deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy in the temperature range of $915^{\circ}C$ to $1015^{\circ}C$ and the strain rate range of $10^{-3}s^{-i}$ to $10s^{-1}$. Under the given test conditions, the hot-deformation of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was mainly led by dynamic recovery rather than by dynamic recrystallization. The activation energy for the plastic deformation in $\alpha+\beta$ field was about 894 kJ/mol and $\beta$ field was 332kJ/mo1. Processing map for hot working are developed on the basis of the variations of efficiency of power dissipation($\eta$=2m/m+1) and flow instability criterion using the dynamic material model. The optimum process condition in the ($\alpha+\beta$) field was obtained at the temperature ranges of $930^{\circ}C$ to $955^{\circ}C$$^{\circ}C$ and a strain rate of $10^{-3}s{-1}$.

In this study, characteristics of TiAl alloy and SCM440 (Cr-Mo steel) have been investigated with the various joining condition by servo motor type friction welder. The experimental factors of friction welder used in this study are spindle revolution, friction speed, and distance, upset speed and distance, respectively. Servo motor type friction welder could be controlled by the level of oil pressure, and it could be performed by position control dependence of electrical energy. Mechanical properties and morphology of welded interface were characterized by various joining condition. This aroused due to the bond strength dependence on friction heat and size of the heat affected zone. Therefore, it is necessary to have enough friction heat and decreased heat affected zone for good friction welding between dissimilar metals. An optimum bond was obtained between TiAl alloy and SCM440 by controlling friction speed and distance. At the spindle revolution 4,000 rpm, friction speed 120 mm/min, friction distance 15 mm, the bond strength was found to be 312 MPa.

High temperature deformation of Ti-6Al-4V alloy with a lamellar colony microstructure was investigated by hot compression and torsion tests. The torsion and compression tests were carried out under a wide range of temperatures and strain rates with true strain up to 2 and 0.7, respectively. The processing maps were generated on the basis of compression and torsion test data and using the principles of dynamic materials modeling (DMM). The shapes of the strain-stress curves in alpha-beta region and processing maps obtained on the two different tests have been compared with a view to evaluate the effect of the microstructure evolution on the flow softening behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy with a lamellar colony microstructure.

Ti-6Al-4V alloys have been widely used as orthopedic materials because of their excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. However, it does not bind directly to the bone, so it requires a surface modification. This problem can be solved by nanotube and micropore formation. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment for micropore, which combines high-voltage spark and electrochemical oxidation, is a new way of forming a ceramic coating on light metals such as titanium and its alloys. This method has excellent reproducibility and can easily control the shape and size of the Ti alloy. In this study, formation of bioactive surface by PEO-treatment after $2^{nd}$ ATO technique of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was invesgated by various instrument. Nanotube oxide surface structure was formed on the surface by anodic oxidation treatment in 0.8 wt.% NaF and 1M $H_3PO_4$ electrolytes. After nanotube formation, nanotube layer was removed by ultrasonic cleaning. PEO-treatment was carried out at 280V for 3 minutes in the electrolytic solution containing the bioactive substance (Mg, Zn, Mn, Sr, and Si). The surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM, S-4800 Hitachi, Japan). An energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS, Inca program, Oxford, UK) was used to analyze the spectra of physiologically active Si, Mn, Mg, Zn, and Sr ions. The PEO film formed on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy surface was characterized using an X-ray diffractometer (TF-XRD, X'pert Philips, Netherlands). It is confirmed that bioactive ions play an essential role in the normal bone growth and metabolism of the human skeletal tissues.

Titanium alloy sheets have excellent specific strength and corrosion resistance as well as good performance at high temperature. Recently, titanium alloys are widely employed not only aerospace parts but also bio prothesis and motorcycle. However, due to the low formability and large spring back at room temperature, titanium alloy sheets were usually formed by slow forming or hot forming with heating die and specimen. In the sheet metal forming area, FE simulation technique to optimize forming process is widely used. To achieve high accuracy FE simulation results, Identification of material properties and deformation characteristic such as yield function are very important. In this study, uniaxial tensile and biaxial tensile test of Ti-6Al-4V alloy sheet with thickness of 1.0mm were performed at elevated temperature of 873k. Biaxial tensile tests with cruciform specimen were performed until the specimen was breakdown to characterize the yield locus of Ti-6Al-4V alloy sheet. The experimental results for yield locus are compared with the theoretical predictions based on Von Mises, Hill, Logan-Hosford, and Balat's model. Among these Logan-Hosford's yield criterion well predicts the experimental results.
