  • The remote measurement system(RMS) as a new experimental method is limited in its application to crack measurement at elevated temperatures because of the oxide layer on the specimen surface. Since TiAIN and Cr coating layers have a high resistance to oxidation and wear, this paper proposed a TiAIN and Cr coating technique for specimens to facilitate the measurement of crack growth behavior using RMS. To investigate the effects of the coating layer, tension and fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature and at $538^{\circ}C$. The test material was 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel which is widely used as a turbine rotor material. From the experimental results, it was found that the mechanical properties of the TiAIN and Cr coated specimens were similar to those of the substrate. Accordingly, the TiAIN and Cr coated layer had hardly any influence on the fatigue crack propagation.

  • TiAIN was deposited onto ISO P2O Cutting Insert Tip substrate by FVAS at the substrate temperature of 80$^{\circ}C$. Cutting and wear test have been performed with TiAIN coated and uncoated WC cutting tools, respectively. Uncoated WC cutting tool has been tested under similar cutting condition for comparison. Cutting force and tool wear of coated and uncoated carbide cutting tools were investigated by cutting length. In cutting test, cutting force of the coated insert tip was larger than the uncoated insert tip by tool wear. Configuration and wear of the coated tool were more stable and resistant than the uncoated. In tool life by the tool wear, the coated cutting tool life was rather longer than the uncoated when tested at high speed (V=250 m/min) than low speed (V=200 m/min), Cutting force, tool wear and life were analysised by tool dynamometer amp(3ch) and oscilloscope.

  • This paper aimes to clarify the effects of tool geometry on the tool life in machining of STS 304. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. The lift of TiN coated cermet tool was the longest, exhibiting shorter life in the order of P2O, cermet, TiCN coated carbide and TiAIN coated carbide tools. S-type tool showed the best performance of all tools used in this tests due to preventing the boundary wear of the side cutting edge.

  • High speed ball end milling is attracting interest in the aerospace industry for the machining of complex 31) airfoil surfaces in nickel based superalloys, Experimental work is detailed on the effect of cutter orientation on tool life, cutting forces, chip formation, specific force and workpiece surface roughness, when high speed ball end milling nickel based supperalloy(lnconel 718). Dry cutting was performed using 8min diameter solid carbide cutters coated with either TiA1N or CrN for the workpiece mounted at an angle of 45˚ from the cutter axis. A horizontal downwards cutting orientation provided the best tool life with cut lengths~50% longer than for all other directions. Evaluation of cutting forces and associated spectrum analysis of results indicated that cutters employed in a horizontal downwards direction produced the least vibration.

  • TiN and TiAlN films were deposited on SKD 11 steel substrates by an arc ion plating (AIP) technique. The crystallinity and morphology for the deposited films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical properties of both films were investigated through the indentation, impact, and wear test. Those films fairly adherent to SKD 11 steel substrate, showed hardness values of 2300 $\pm$ 100kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ and 3200 $\pm$ 100kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ with a load of 25g, respectively. During impact test, TiAlN films showed much superior impact wear resistance to TiN films. It could be suggested that the TiN films was failed relatively by plastic deformation with oxidation during impact test, while TiAlN films was failed by brittle fracture and resisted the oxidation by the impact energy. The friction coefficient of TiAlN films became lower than that of TiN films at high sliding speed condition although it was higher than that of TiN films at low speed. Therefore, TiAlN films was suggested to be more advantageous than TiN films for high speed machining fields.
