  • Due to its stability at high temperature and its layered structure, $Ti_3SiC_2$ MAX phase was considered to the interphase of $SiC_f/SiC$ composite. In this study, $Ti_3SiC_2$ MAX phase powder was deposited on SiC fiber via the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. The Zeta potential of the $Ti_3SiC_2$ suspension with and without polyethyleneimine as a dispersant was measured to determine the conditions of the EPD experiments. Using a suspension with 0.03 wt.% ball milled $Ti_3SiC_2$ powder and 0.3 wt.% PEI, $Ti_3SiC_2$ MAX phase was successfully coated on SiC fiber with an EPD voltage of 10 V for 2 h. Most of the coated $Ti_3SiC_2$ powders are composed of spherical particles. Part of the $Ti_3SiC_2$ powders that are platelet shaped are oriented parallel to the SiC fiber surface. From these results we expect that $Ti_3SiC_2$ can be applied to the interphase of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites.

  • TiC coating formed on $Si_3N_4-TiC$ composite ceramic by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has an improved microstructures, better thermal shock resistance and interfacial bonding than TiN coating does. TiN coating formed by CVD, however, has lower friction coefficients against steels and better chemical stability. The experimental results indicate that the coated insert is superior to the uncoated one in flank and crater wear resistance. And the multilayer coating shows an improved wear resistance than the monolayer coating.

  • Powder mixtures of $\beta$-SiC-TiC in a weight ratio of 2:1 containing 5-20 wt% additives ($Al_2O_3$-$Y_2O_3$) were liquid-phase sintered at $1830^{\circ}C$ for 1h by hot-pressing and subsequently annealed at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 6h to enhance grain growth. The annealed specimens revealed a microstructure of \"in situ-toughened composite\" as a result of the $\beta$longrightarrow$\alpha$ phase transformation of SiC during annealing. The increase of the content of additives accelerated the growth of elongated $\alpha$-SiC grains with higher aspect ratio and improved fracture toughness. The fracture toughness of SiC-TiC composite containing 20 wt% additive was 6.2 MPa.$m^{1/2}$.2}$.

  • The reaction-bonded TiC-Ni/Si/Co composites were prepared by the melt infiltration of Co, Si, and Ni me-tal into the TiC preforms. The miocrostructure reaction composition and mechanical properties were in-vestigated. In the case of the melt infiltrated with Co and Ni TiC grain shape was changed from angular to spherical shape with the average grain size of ∼5$\mu\textrm{m}$. In the case of the melt infiltrated with Co/Si or Ni/Si, Si was reacted with TiC particles and formed SiC particles. The bending strength of both specimens which have atomic ratio of 3 were 710 MPa and 515 MPa respectively. In the case of the melt infiltrated with Ni/Si/Co,. nonstoichiometric TiC was formed and its bending strength decreased to 420 MPa.

  • The composites were fabricated 61[vol.%] ${\beta}$-SiC and 39[vol.%] $TiB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 8, 12, 16[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid by pressureless annealing at 1650[$^{\circ}C$] for 4 hours. The present study investigated the influence of the content of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ sintering additives on the microstructure, mechanical and electrical properties of the pressureless annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites. Reactions between SiC and transition metal $TiB_2$ were not observed in the microstructure and the phase analysis of the pressureless annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites. Phase analysis of SiC-$TiB_2$ composites by XRD revealed mostly of ${\alpha}$-SiC(6H), ${\beta}$-SiC(3C), $TiB_2$, and In Situ YAG($Al_2Y_3O_{12}$). The relative density of SiC-$TiB_2$ composites was lowered due to gaseous products of the result of reaction between SiC and $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$. There is another reason which pressureless annealed temperature 1650[$^{\circ}C$] is lower $300{\sim}450[^{\circ}C]$ than applied pressure sintering temperature $1950{\sim}2100[^{\circ}C]$. The relative density, the flexural strength, the Young's modulus and the Vicker's hardness showed the highest value of 82.29[%], 189.5[Mpa], 54.60[Gpa] and 2.84[Gpa] for SiC-$TiB_2$ composites added with 16[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. Abnormal grain growth takes place during phase transformation from ${\beta}$-SiC into ${\alpha}$-SiC was correlated with In Situ YAG phase by reaction between $Al_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$ additive during sintering. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of 0.0117[${\Omega}{\cdot}cm$] for 16[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at 25[$^{\circ}C$]. The electrical resistivity was all negative temperature coefficient resistance (NTCR) in the temperature ranges from $25^{\circ}C$ to 700[$^{\circ}C$]. The resistance temperature coefficient of composite showed the lowest value of $-2.3{\times}10^{-3}[^{\circ}C]^{-1}$ for 16[wt%] additives in the temperature ranges from 25[$^{\circ}C$] to 100[$^{\circ}C$].

  • Alumina composites reinforced with SiC whiskers only or combinded with TiC particles were prepared by hot-pressing at 1850$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The mechanical properties and microstructures of composites were investigated in this study. By of addition either 20 vol% SiC whiskers or 20 vol% TiC particles, the flexural strength fo alumina was increased from 360 MPa to 650 MPa or 730 MPa, respectively, and the KIC was also increased from 3.5 MPa$.$m1/2 to 5.5MPa$.$m1/2 or 4.4MPa$.$m1/2, respectively. In the case of composites with 20 vol% SiC whiskers and 2 vol% TiC particles. The flexural strength and KIC showed relatively high value of 800 MPa and 5.3MPa$.$m1/2, respectively. The improvement of mechanical properties was considered to be due to both the smaller average grain size and the crack deflection.

  • In order to fulfil the requirements of the various performance profiles of ceramic cutting tools, six different SiC-based ceramics have been fabricated by hot-pressing (SiC--${Si}_3 {N}_4$composites) or by hot-pressing and subsequent annealing (monolithic SiC and SiC-TiC composites). Correlation between the annealing time and the corresponding microstructure and the mechanical properties of resulting ceramics have been investigated. The grain size of both ${Si}_3 {N}_4$and SiC in SiC-${Si}_3 {N}_4$composites increased with the annealing time. Monolithic SiC has the highest hardness, SiC-TiC composite the highest toughness, and the SiC-${Si}_3 {N}_4$composite the highest strength among the ceramics investigated. The hardness of SiC-${Si}_3 {N}_4$composites was relatively independent of the grain size, but dependent on the sintered density. The cutting performance of the newly developed SiC-based ceramic cutting tools will be described in Part 2 of this paper.

  • Si3N4-TiC composites have been known as electrically conductive ceramics. $Si_3N_4-TiC$ composites with 2 wt% $Al_2O_3$ and 4 wt% $Y_2O_3$ were hot pressed in $N_2$ environment. The mechanical properties including hardness, fracture toughness, and flexural strength and tribological properties were investigated as a function of TiC content. $Si_3N_4-40$ vol% TiC composite was hot pressed at $1,750^{\circ}C$, $1,800^{\circ}C$, and $1,850^{\circ}C$ for 1, 3 and 5 hours in $N_2$ gas. Mechanical and tribolgical properties depended on microstructures, which were controlled by hte TiC content, hot press temperature, and hot press holding time. However, mechanical properties and tribological behaviors were degraded by the chemical reaction between TiC and N. The chemically reacted products such as TiCN, SiC, and $SiO_2$ were detered by the X-ray diffraction analysis.

  • In this investigation, $B_4C$ based ceramic composites were fabricated by in-situ reaction hot pressing using $B_4C$, TiC SiC powder as starting materials. The reaction synthesized composites by hot pressing at $1950^{\circ}C$ was found to posses very high relative density. The reaction synthesized $B_4C$ composites comprise $B_4C$, $TiB_2$, SiC and graphite by the reaction between TiC and $B_4C$. The newly formed $TiB_2$ and graphite was embedded both inside grain and at grain boundary $B_4C$. The mechanical properties of reaction synthesized $B_4C-TiB_2-SiC$-graphite composites were more enhanced compared to those of monolithic $B_4C$.
