  • Aluminum alloys are being employed in automobile parts as strive to reduce overall vehicle weight to meet demands for improved fuel economy and reduction in vehicle emissions. Al-based composites reinforced with ceramic ($Al_2O_3,\;SiC,\;TiC\;and\;B_4C$) applications in a variety of components in automotive engines, such as liners, where the tribological properties of the material are important. In this study, Al-base composites reinforced with TiC particle powders has been developed for producing plasma spray coatings. The composite plasma spray powders were prepared Al-13Si-3Mg(wt%) alloy with TiC(40, 60 and 80wt%) particles ($0.2~5{\mu}textrm{m}$) by drum type ball milling. The composite powders ($36~76{\mu}textrm{m}$) were sprayed with plasma torch. Plasma sprayed coatings were heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The wear resistances of the plasma sprayed coatings were found to decrease with increasing TiC content and improved with heat treatment. AlSiMg-40% TiC heat-treated coatings were showed the best wear resistance in this study.

  • Fracture of uni-directional carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix composite is strongly dependent on the orientation of basal plane in graphite matrix when it is limited within matrix. The orientation of basal planes are vertically stacked to carbon fiber which results in the weakness for applied tensile or shear force in thermosetting resin derived-carbon matrix composite. Microtextural control of the matrix was tried through chemical interaction between metal carbides and furan resin derived-carbon matrix. SiC and TiO2 addition made the orientation disordered. However, porosity increased due to decomposition of SiC. Interfacial bonding could be controlled by TiO2 addition, but carbon fiber was considerably reacted with TiC during thermal treatment higher than 2$600^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it is desirable to control the thermal treatment temperature at which decomposition of SiC was not serious and TiC/C was not formed eutectoid.

  • This work deals with the preparation of dense SiC based ceramics with high electrical conductivity without oxide sintering additives. SiC samples with different content of conductive Ti-NbC phase were hot pressed at $1850^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in Ar atmosphere under mechanical pressure of 30 MPa. The conductive phase is a mixture of Ti-NbC in weight ratio of Ti/NbC 1:4. Composite with 50% of conductive Ti-NbC phase showed the highest electrical conductivity of $30.6{\times}10^3\;S{\cdot}m^{-1}$, while the good mechanical properties of SiC matrix were preserved (fracture toughness 4.5 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and Vickers hardness 18.7 GPa). The obtained results show that use of NbC and Ti as sintering and also electrically conductive additives is appropriate for the preparation of SiC-based composite with sufficient electrical conductivity for electric discharge machining.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the processing techniques of Fiber Reinforced Metal by Liquid Phase Diffusion Bonding method with SiC fiber as a reinforcing material and CP Ti(Commercial Pure) as a matrix. The microstructure and the distribution of elements in reaction and CP Ti(Commercial Pure) as a matrix. The microstructure and the distribution of elements is reaction zone among CP Ti/Ti-15wt%Cu-20wt%Ni(TCN20)/SiC long fiber were investigated by Optical Microscope, SEM/EDX, EPMA, X-ray and AES. The results obtained in this study are as follows. 1) When Ti matrix composite materials are fabricated under the bonding condition of 1273Kx1200sec, the SiC long fiber was the most suitable reinforcing material for Ti matrix composite materials. 2) With SiC long fiber under same condition, a TiC layer(1.0-1.6$\mu\textrm{m}$) was observed on the surface of SiC long fiber. 3) Liquid Phase Diffusion Bonding has shown the feasibility of production of Ti matrix composite materials.

  • The wear behavior of thermal sprayed AlSiMg-40TiC composite coatings were studied as a function of load and sliding velocity under unlubricated conditions. Experiments were performed using a block-on-ring(WC-6wt%/Co, Hv 1500) type. The tests were carried out a various load(30∼ 125.5N) and sliding velocity(0.5∼2.0m/s). Three wear rate regions were observed in the AlSiMg-40TiC composite coatings. The wear rate in region I at low load (less then 8N( were less than 1×{TEX}$10^{-5}${/TEX}㎣/m. Low wear rates in region I resulted from the load-bearing capacity of TiC particles. The transition from region I to II occurred when the applied load exceeded the fracture and pull-out strength of the particles. The TiC fractured particles trapped between the specimen and the counterface acted as third-body abrasive wear. The subsurface layer worn surface in region II was composed of the mechanically mixed layer (MML). The wear rate increase abruptly above a critical load (region III). The high wear rate in region III was induced by frictional temperature and involves massive surface damage.

  • The composites were fabricated 61[vol.%] ${\beta}$-SiC and 39[vol.%] $TiB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 12[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid by pressure or pressureless annealing at 1,650[$^{\circ}C$] for 4 hours. Reactions between SiC and transition metal $TiB_2$ were not observed in the microstructure and the phase analysis of the SiC-$TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites. Phase analysis of SiC-$TiB_2$ composites by XRD revealed mostly of ${\alpha}$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, and In Situ $YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$. The relative density, the flexural strength and the Young's modulus showed the highest value of 88.32[%], 136.43[MPa] and 52.82[GPa] for pressure annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ composites at room temperature. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of 0.0162[${\Omega}{\cdot}cm$] for pressure annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ composite at 25[$^{\circ}C$]. The electrical resistivity of the pressure annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ composite was positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) but the electrical resistivity of the pressureless annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ composites was negative temperature coefficient resistance(NTCR) in the temperature ranges from 25[$^{\circ}C$] to 700[$^{\circ}C$].

  • The microstructural evolution and crystalline phases of this infiltration of Ti+Al liquids in TiC, SiC, TiC+C, and SiC+C preforms have been investigated. As the Ti and Al mixing ratio in Ti+Al infiltrated liquid changes, the newly formed reaction products, which were reacted from the Ti+Al liquid with preforms, consisted of three major phases as Ti3AlC, Al2Ti4C2 or Al4C3. The TiC grain shape was changed to spheroid, when Ti3AlC was formed. In case of Al2Ti4C2 formation, the platelet grain was formed from the original TiC grain. When Al4C3 was formed, nodular or intergranular fine-grained Al4C3 was formed around the TiC grain, while the original TiC grain shape was not changed.
