RF sputtering process was applied to produce thin hydroxyapatite[HA, Ca10($PO_4$)$_{6}$$ (OH)_2$films on Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrates. To make a 101.6 mm dia.${\times}$5 mm HA target, the commercial HA powder was first calcinated for 3h at $200^{\circ}C$. A certain amount of the calcinated HA powder was pressed under a pressure of 20,000 psi by the cold isostatic press(CIP) and the pressed HA target was sintered for 6 h at $1,200^{\circ}C$. The effects of different heat treating conditions on the bonding strength between HA thin films and Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrates were studied. Before deposition, the alloy substrates were annealed for 1 h at $850^{\circ}C$ under $3.0${\times}$10^{-3}$ Xtorr, and after deposition, the hydroxyapatite/Ti-6Al-4V alloy thin films were annealed for 1 h at 400, 600 and $800^{\circ}C$ under the atmosphere, respectively. Experimental results represented that the HA thin films on the annealed substrates had higher hardness than non-heat treated substrates before the deposition.
Titanium alloy sheets have excellent specific strength and corrosion resistance as well as good performance at high temperature. Recently, titanium alloys are widely employed not only aerospace parts but also bio prothesis and motorcycle. But the database is insufficient of the titanium alloy for press forming process. In this study, the effect of temperature on the forming limit diagram was investigated for Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheet through the Hocker's punch stretching test at elevated temperature. Experimental results obtained in this study can provide a database for development of press forming process at elevated temperature of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheet. From the experimental studies it can be concluded that the formability of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheet is governed by the ductile failure for the testing temperature below and vice versa neck-induced failure above the recrystalization temperature $0.5T_m$. The formability of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheet at $750^{\circ}C$ increases about 7 times compared with that at room temperature.
A new titanium based alloy, Ti-10Ta-10Nb, has designed to examine the improved mechanical properties and biocompatibility. A specimen of titanium alloy was melted in a consumable vacuum arc furnace and homogenized at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The effect of hot rolling on microstructure was estimated after rolling at $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ respectively. Surface of melted alloy by consumable vacuum arc melting was consisted of rough surface and it was changed to sound surface by coating of $ZrO_2$ slurry on copper mold surface. The hardness of Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy increased with the amount of${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase. Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy showed $Widmanst{\"{a}}ten$ structure by hot rolling at $800^{\circ}C$ and in the rolling ${\beta}-region$ was negligible effects on microstructure refining.
Titanium alloy for bio-medical applications have been developed to reduce the toxicity of alloying elements and avoid the stress-shielding effect which is caused by relatively high elastic modulus compared to bone. Ti-39Nb-6Zr (TNZ40) alloy of elastic modulus exhibits around 40 GPa in the case of beta single phase. However, the strength of this alloy is lower than the other types of titanium alloys. Many research found that adding oxygen to beta-titanium alloys is beneficial for improving the strength through solid solution strengthening. In this study, TNZ40 ingots with addition of O were prepared by an arc remelting process (Ti-39Nb-6Zr-0.16O (wt.%), Ti-39Nb-6Zr-0.26O (wt.%)). Thermo-mechanical processing (i.e., heat treatment, cold swaging and aging heat treatment) has been performed under various conditions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of oxygen content and ω phase formation on microstructure and mechanical properties.
In thls study, the effects of the composltional change of cast Ni-Ti alloys on its characteristics including mechanical properties, phase transformation temperature, and ion releasing rate were investigated. brittle:behavior was shown in the stress-strain curve of the alloy containing low Ti content (Ni-44.0%Ti). By increasing the Ti content, the trend in stress-strain curves changed from that of superelasticity to that of shape memory effect(Ni-44.4%Ti, Ni-45.1%Ti, Ni-45, 5%Ti). Phase transformation temperature ($A_f, {\;}M_5$ point) increased with increasing the Ti content. lon releasing rate of four types of Mi-Ti alloys was very low compared to that of the dental commerical Ni-Cr alloy.
The effect of additives on the castability of the AC2BS aluminum alloy, which contains 35% recycled scrap, was investigated. For the wide utilization of the recycled scrap AC2BS aluminum alloy, the research results were compared to those with the AC2B virgin alloy, which is typical Al-Si-Cu alloy system. It was confirmed that the addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B increased the ${\alpha}$-Al nucleation temperature during solidification and decreased the grain size through cooling curve and microstructural observations of the recycled alloy. It was also found that an addition of Al-10%Sr decreased the eutectic Si growth temperature during the solidification process and modified the shape of the eutectic Si of the recycled alloy. The characteristics of fluidity, shrinkage and solidification crack strength were evaluated. For the AC2BS aluminum alloy containing 35% recycled scrap, both ${\alpha}$-Al grain refinement due to Ti-B and eutectic Si modifications due to Sr contributed to the improvement of the fluidity. The macro- shrinkage ratio increased with additions of both Al-10%Sr and Al-5%Ti-1%B and the micro-shrinkage ratio increased with the addition of Al-10%Sr but decreased with the addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B. The casting characteristics of TiB and Sr-treated AC2BS aluminum alloy containing 35% recycled scrap are similar to those of AC2B virgin alloy. The improvement of the solidification crack strength of the AC2BS aluminum alloy was possible by the reduction of the grain boundary the stress concentration through the enhancement by both ${\bullet}{\cdot}$-Al refinement and eutectic Si modification. More extensive use of the AC2BS aluminum alloy containing 35% recycled scrap can be expected in the future.
Statement of problem: Dental magnetic materials have been applied to removable prosthetic appliances, maxillofacial prostheses, obturator and dental implant but they still have some problems such as low corrosion resistance in oral environments. Purpose: To increase the corrosion resistance of dental magnetic materials, surfaces of Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were plated with TiN and sealed with stainless steels. Materials and methods : Surfaces of Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were plated with TiN and sealed with stainless steels, and then three kinds of electrochemical corrosion test were performed in 0.9% NaCl solution; potentiodynamic, potentiostatic, and electrochemical impedance test. From this study, corrosion behavior, amount of elements released, mean average surface roughness values, the changing of retention force, and magnetic force values were measured comparing with control group of non-coated magnetic materials. Results: The values of surface roughness of TiN coated Sm-Co and TiN coated Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were lower than those of non coated Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B alloy. From results of potentiodynamic test, the passive current density of TiN coated Sm-Co alloy were smaller than those of TiN coated Nd-Fe-B alloy and non coated alloys in 0.9% NaCl solution. From results of potentiostatic and electrochemical impedance test, the surface stability of the TiN coated Sm-Co alloy was more drastically increased than that of the TiN coated Nd-Fe-B alloy and non-coated alloy. The retention and magnetic force after and before corrosion test did not change in the case of TiN coated magnetic alloy sealed with stainless steel. Conclusion: It is considered that the corrosion problem and improvement for surface stability of dental magnetic materials could be solved by ion plating with TiN on the surface of dental magnetic materials and by sealing with stainless steels.
