Formation of Bioactive Surface by PEO-treatment after 2nd ATO Technique of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy (Ti-6Al-4V 합금에 2nd ATO 처리 후 플라즈마 전해 산화법에 의한 생체활성표면형성)

  • Ti-6Al-4V alloys have been widely used as orthopedic materials because of their excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. However, it does not bind directly to the bone, so it requires a surface modification. This problem can be solved by nanotube and micropore formation. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment for micropore, which combines high-voltage spark and electrochemical oxidation, is a new way of forming a ceramic coating on light metals such as titanium and its alloys. This method has excellent reproducibility and can easily control the shape and size of the Ti alloy. In this study, formation of bioactive surface by PEO-treatment after $2^{nd}$ ATO technique of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was invesgated by various instrument. Nanotube oxide surface structure was formed on the surface by anodic oxidation treatment in 0.8 wt.% NaF and 1M $H_3PO_4$ electrolytes. After nanotube formation, nanotube layer was removed by ultrasonic cleaning. PEO-treatment was carried out at 280V for 3 minutes in the electrolytic solution containing the bioactive substance (Mg, Zn, Mn, Sr, and Si). The surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM, S-4800 Hitachi, Japan). An energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS, Inca program, Oxford, UK) was used to analyze the spectra of physiologically active Si, Mn, Mg, Zn, and Sr ions. The PEO film formed on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy surface was characterized using an X-ray diffractometer (TF-XRD, X'pert Philips, Netherlands). It is confirmed that bioactive ions play an essential role in the normal bone growth and metabolism of the human skeletal tissues.

Predicting Deformation Behavior of Additively Manufactured Ti-6Al-4V Based on XGB and LGBM (XGB 및 LGBM을 활용한 Ti-6Al-4V 적층재의 변형 거동 예측)

  • The present study employed two different machine-learning approaches, the extreme gradient boosting (XGB) and light gradient boosting machine (LGBM), to predict a compressive deformation behavior of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V. Such approaches have rarely been verified in the field of metallurgy in contrast to artificial neural network and its variants. XGB and LGBM provided a good prediction for elongation to failure under an extrapolated condition of processing parameters. The predicting accuracy of these methods was better than that of response surface method. Furthermore, XGB and LGBM with optimum hyperparameters well predicted a deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V additively manufactured under the extrapolated condition. Although the predicting capability of two methods was comparable, LGBM was superior to XGB in light of six-fold higher rate of machine learning. It is also noted this work has verified the LGBM approach in solving the metallurgical problem for the first time.

Effect of Fe on the High Temperature Oxidation of Ti-Al-Fe Alloys (Ti-Al-Fe계 합금의 고온산화거동에 미치는 Fe의 영향)

  • In this paper, high temperature oxidation behavior of newly developed alloys, Ti-6Al-4Fe and Ti-6Al-1Fe, is examined. To understand the effect of Fe on the air oxidation behavior of the Ti-Al-Fe alloy system, thermal oxidation tests are carried out at $700^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ for 96 hours. Ti-6Al-4V alloy is also prepared and tested under the same conditions for comparison with the developed alloys. The oxidation resistance of the Ti-Al-Fe alloy system is superior to that of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Ti-6Al-4V shows the worst oxidation resistance for all test conditions. This is not a result of the addition of Fe, but rather it is due to the elimination of V, which has deleterious effects on high temperature oxidation. The oxidation of the Ti-Al-Fe alloy system follows the parabolic rate law. At $700^{\circ}C$, Fe addition does not have a noticeable influence on the amount of weight gain of all specimens. However, at $800^{\circ}C$, Ti-6Al-4Fe alloy shows remarkable degradation compared to Ti-6Al-1Fe and Ti-6Al. It is discovered that the formation of $Al_2O_3$, a diffusion resistance layer, is remarkably hindered by a relative decrease of the ${\alpha}$ volume fraction. This is because Fe addition increases the volume fraction of ${\beta}$ phase within the Ti-6Al-xFe alloy system. Activities of Al, Ti, and Fe with respect to the formation of oxide layers are calculated and analyzed to explore the oxidation mechanism.

Effect of Dry-Electropolishing on the High Cycle Fatigue Properties of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Manufactured by Selective Laser Melting (선택적 레이저 용융법으로 제조된 Ti-6Al-4V 합금의 고 주기 피로 특성에 미치는 건식 전해 연마의 영향)

  • Additively manufactured metallic components contain high surface roughness values, which lead to unsatisfactory high cycle fatigue resistance. In this study, high cycle fatigue properties of selective laser melted Ti-6Al-4V alloy are investigated and the effect of dry-electropolishing, which does not cause weight loss, on the fatigue resistance is also examined. To reduce the internal defect in the as-built Ti-6Al-4V, first, hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is conducted. Then, to improve the mechanical properties, solution treatment and aging are also implemented. Selective laser melting (SLM)-built Ti64 shows a primary α and secondary α+β lamellar structure. The sizes of secondary α and β are approximately 2 ㎛ and 100 nm, respectively. On the other hand, surface roughness Ra values of before and after dry-electropolishing are 6.21 ㎛ and 3.15 ㎛, respectively. This means that dry-electropolishing is effective in decreasing the surface roughness of selective laser melted Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The comparison of high cycle fatigue properties between before and after dry-electropolished samples shows that reduced surface roughness improves the fatigue limit from 150 MPa to 170 MPa. Correlations between surface roughness and high cycle fatigue properties are also discussed based on these findings.

  • The metal forming behavior and defect formation in Ti-6Al-4V tube during hot backward extrusion were investigated. Dynamic material model(DMM) including Ziegler's instability criterion was employed to predict the forming defects such as shear band, inner and/or surface cracks. This approach was coupled to the internal variables generated from FE analysis. The simulation results fur the backward extrusion were compared with the experimental observation. The chilling effect and friction indicated a great influence on the deformation mode of the tube and the formation of surface cracks. The formation of forming defects in the extruded tube was attributed to non-uniform distribution of strain, strain rate and temperatures in the extruded tubes for the given test conditions.

A Study on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Hf, Ta Added Ti-l5Sn-4Nb system Alloys for Biomaterial (Hf, Ta가 첨가된 Ti-l5Sn-4Nb계 생체용 합금의 미세조직 및 기계적 성질에 관한 연구)

  • Ta and Hf added Ti-l5Sn-4Nb alloys without V and Al elements for biomaterial were melted by arc furnace in response to recent concerns about the long term safety of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. All specimens were homogenized at $1000^{\circ}C$ and solution treatment was performed at $812^{\circ}C$ and aging treatment at $500^{\circ}C$. The microstructure and mechanical properties were analysed by optical micrograph, hardness tester and instron. Ti-l5Sn-4Nb system alloys showed widmanstatten microstructure which is typical microstructure in $\alpha$$\beta$ type Ti alloys. The Ti-l5Sn-4Nb-2Hf and Ti-l5Sn-4Nb-2Ta alloys showed better hardness and tensile strength compared with Ti-6Al-4V. The result of XPS analysis, Ti-l5Sn-4Nb alloy in air atmosphere consisted of $TiO_2$, SnO and NbO.

Characterization of Hot Deformation Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy (Ti-6Al-4V 합금의 고온변형거동 규명)

  • Compression tests were carried out to investigate the hot-deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy in the temperature range of $915^{\circ}C$ to $1015^{\circ}C$ and the strain rate range of $10^{-3}s^{-i}$ to $10s^{-1}$. Under the given test conditions, the hot-deformation of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was mainly led by dynamic recovery rather than by dynamic recrystallization. The activation energy for the plastic deformation in $\alpha+\beta$ field was about 894 kJ/mol and $\beta$ field was 332kJ/mo1. Processing map for hot working are developed on the basis of the variations of efficiency of power dissipation($\eta$=2m/m+1) and flow instability criterion using the dynamic material model. The optimum process condition in the ($\alpha+\beta$) field was obtained at the temperature ranges of $930^{\circ}C$ to $955^{\circ}C$$^{\circ}C$ and a strain rate of $10^{-3}s{-1}$.

  • Ti-6Al-4V alloy is a critical strategic metal used in aerospace structure due to the high specific strength, toughness, durability, low density, corrosion resistance. Examples of application of this alloy are airframe structural components, aircraft gas turbine disks and blades. Forming of this alloy is not easy due to its high strength and low formability. However, this alloy shows superplastic properties that allow for large plastic deformation under certain conditions. Combination of superplastic forming and diffusion bonding(SPF/DB) processes of this alloy has been widely used to replace mechanically fastened structures with reduced weight and fabrication costs. In this study, superplastic forming/diffusion bonding technology has been developed for fabricating lightweight sandwich panels with Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The experimental results show the forming of titanium lightweight sandwich structure is successfully performed from 3 and 4 sheets of Ti-6Al-4V.

  • This paper investigates the compressive deformation behavior of direct metal tooling (DMT), processing titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) parts under high strain loading conditions. Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) experiments were performed to determine the flow stress and the coefficients of the Johnson-Cook model. This model is described as a function of strain, strain rate, and temperature. SHPB experiments were performed to characterize the deformation behavior of specimens made with 3D printers, using Ti-6Al-4V material under high temperature and dynamic loading.

Determination and Analysis of Interface Heat Transfer Coefficients in Hot Forming of Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-6Al-4V 합금의 열간성형에 대한 계면열전달계수의 결정 및 분석)

  • Determination of the interface heat transfer coefficient was investigated in non-isothermal bulk forming of glass-coated Ti-6Al-4V. FE analysis and experiments were conducted. Equipment consisting of AISI Hl3 die was instrumented with thermocouples located at sub-surface of the bottom die. Die temperature changes were investigated in related to the process variables such as reduction, lubricant and initial die temperature. The calibration approach based on heat conduction and FE analysis using an inverse algorithm were used to evaluate the interface heat transfer between graphite-lubricated die and glass-coated workpiece. The coefficients determined were affected mainly by the contact pressure. The validation of the coefficients was made by the comparison between experimental data and FE analysis results.
