This paper describes a new pivoting technique to improve bearing performance in pivoted pad thrust bearings. This new technique adjusts the pivot line in a line pivoted pad thrust bearing to be parallel to the trailing edge of a sector shaped pad. Bearing performance factors such as load carrying capacity, frictional torque and flow rate are numerically investigated for conventional point-pivoted and line-pivoted pads and for the new parallel-line pivoting technique. It is shown that the load carving capacity can be maximized with the new technique.

The effect of pintle shapes and position to the thrust performance of Solid Rocket Motor was studied by experimental-aided Computational Fluid Dynamic(CFD). Among the turbulent models for RANS in Fluent, Spalart-Allmaras model was better agreement with the nozzle wall pressure distribution attained by cold-flow test than other models. When nozzle throat area was decreased, magnitude of thrust was increased. The bigger pintle size was, the more thrust of pintle tip pressure was obtained. Meanwhile the more thrust of nozzle and chamber pressure decreased. Hence, total thrust of big pintle was less than a small pintle under same throat area condition.

It is necessary to evaluate periodically the performance of the AOV(air-operated valve) which is used for controlling flow and pressure in nuclear power plant. The required thrust for actuating valve and available thrust of actuator are calculated with conditions of flow through a valve in this study and operating performance is analyzed through comparing two thrusts. In general, differential pressure is increased according to increase the flow rate and differential pressure affects the required thrust of valve. We found the fact that it is possible not to close the valve perfectly because required thrust becomes bigger than available thrust of actuator.
This study presents an experimental investigation of the effects of surface roughness on gas foil thrust bearing (GFTB) performance. A high-speed motor with the maximum speed of 80 krpm rotates a thrust runner and a pneumatic cylinder applies static loads to the test GFTB. When the motor speed increases and reaches a specific speed at which a hydrodynamic film pressure generated within the gap between the thrust runner and test GFTB is enough to support the applied static load, the thrust runner lifts off from the test GFTB and the friction mechanism changes from the boundary lubrication to the hydrodynamic lubrication. The experiment shows a series of lift-off test and load-carrying capacity test for two thrust runners with different surface roughnesses. For a constant static load of 15 N, thrust runner A with its lower surface roughness exhibits a higher start-up torque but lower lift-off torque than thrust runner B with a higher surface roughness. The load capacity test at a rotor speed of 60 krpm reveals that runner A results in a higher maximum load capacity than runner B. Runner A also shows a lower drag torque, friction coefficient, and bearing temperature than runner B at constant static loads. The results imply that maintaining a consistent surface roughness for a thrust runner may improve its static GFTB performance.

This paper presents the selection method o( the input current wave forms for the thrust force ripple of linear pulse motor (LPM). We have developed and tested a prototype 2-phase 4-poles LPM with the permanent magnet and its control driver. To obtain the thrust performance curve of LPM, the performance curve at the air gap and the thrust are calculated and estimated by the analytical method on the base of the magnetic equivalent circuit and the finite element method. And, the thrust characteristics at the static operation state are analyzed and experimented with the respect to the input wave forms such as the rectangular, the triangular micro-step and the sine micro-step wave forms to investigate the thrust ripple and the vibration effects of LPM.

It is very difficult to measure an accurate thrust for the performance test of liquid rocket engine. Liquid rocket engine is attached to the propellant feed system, control valve and many other safety systems. Without considering these effects, thrust data measured from the firing test is not reliable and meaningless. In this research, the modified thrust measurement system, which includes both all these side effects is developed for the verification of low thrust liquid rocket engine performance. In addition, reliability appraisal technique is studied to secure the reliability of thrust measurement system.
In the present study, we develop an analysis module to be applicable to design of sliding thrust bearings. The pressure equation is solved by using the finite element method. Average lubricant temperature is obtained from using the energy balance method. The module developed has been applied to three types of thrust bearing, such as tapered-land thrust bearings of angular and diamond types, and tilting-pad thrust bearings. Effects of the dam of the tapered-lad thrust bearings have also been investigated. It has been seen that the tapered-land thrust bearings of angular type result in the highest load capacity, while the tilting pad thrust bearings result in the lowest lubricant temperature. It has also been seen that the dam in the tapered-land thrust bearings increases both the load capacity and lubricant temperature.

Experimental study for supersonic co-flowing fluidic thrust vectoring control utilizing the secondary flow is performed. The characteristics of the thrust vectoring of two dimensional supersonic flow (Mach 2.0) are studied by Schlieren flow visualization and highly-accurate multi-component force measurements using the load cells. It is observed that the thrust deflection angle initially decreases and increases again forming a V-shaped variation as the pressure of the secondary flow increases. Characteristics of the performance coefficients of the system are also studied, and the detailed operating conditions for higher performance of the technique are suggested.

It is definitely important to measure thrust during ground test when developing air-breathing engine, and in case of air-breathing engine, gross thrust should be calculated considering not only the measured thrust but also the force induced by the air flow of engine intake. Also, side thrust like yaw and pitch should be measured and analyzed using multi-component thrust measurement system. Engine performance was accurately evaluated by calculating the gross thrust of air breathing engine precisely which is analyzed from below serial procedure: labyrinth seal isolation, 1-axis gross thrust calculation, develop multi-component thrust measurement system, and side thrust analysis.

During the preliminary design phase of aircraft development, it is necessary to evaluate many potential engine/airframe combinations to determine the best solution to given set of mission requirements and it is very important to establish a methodology to calculate precisely engine installed performance. It was carried out to calculate turbofan engine installed performance of a supersonic aircraft for a given engine/aircraft configuration. Thus "Thrust minus drag accounting system" was introduced to identify and calculate the elements of installed thrust or installed propulsive force by using the database based on wind tunnel test data. This paper describes the calculated results of installed thrust of turbofan engine for a supersonic aircraft. aircraft.
