A Fundamental Study of Thrust-Vector Control Using a Dual Throat Nozzle (이중목 노즐을 이용한 추력벡터 제어에 관한 기초적 연구)

  • Dual throat nozzle(DTN) is recently attracting much attention as a new concept of the thrust vectoring technique of propulsion jet. This DTN is designed with two throats, an upstream minimum and a downstream minimum at the nozzle exit, with a cavity in between the upstream throat and exit. In the present study, a computational work has been carried out to analyze the performance of a dual throat nozzle(DTN) at various mass flow rate of secondary flow. Two-dimensional, steady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The present computational results were validated with some experimental data available. Based upon the present results, Thrust-vector control using a DTN is discussed in terms of the thrust coefficient and the coefficient of discharge.

Upon deflecting them, lift created on the vanesistransferred to the rocket generating the desired control moment. The presentstudy examinesthe concept of using an add-on jet vaneTVC kit to a plain nozzle.The impact of adding the kit with different vaneslocations and deflectionanglesisnumericallyinvestigatedbysimulatingtheflowthroughthenozzlewiththekit.Twohingelocations are examined namely, at 24% and 36% of nozzle exit diameter. For each location, angles of deflection namely 0°, 5°, 10°, and 15° are examined. Focus is made on variation of control force, thrust losses, lift and drag on vanes, jet inclination, and jetflow structure withTVCkit design parameters.

Based on the requirement of the mixed turbofan engine of the supersonic aircraft, two dimensional thrust vector nozzle with variable pitch angle was designed. To investigate the effect of the thrust vectoring nozzle, the numerical analysis was conducted by using Fluent under the several pitch deflection angle.

  • The advantages of the SITVC(secondary injection thrust vector control) technique over mechanical thrust vector systems include a reduction in both the nozzle weight and complexity due to the elimination of the mechanical actuators that are used in conventional vectoring. Computational study is performed to understand the fluidic thrust vectoring control of an axisymmetric nozzle, in which secondary gas injection is made in the divergent section of the nozzle. The nozzle has a design mach number 3. The effect of injection hole number and shape of secondary jet on the mach number distribution of SITVC were investigated. The standard ${\kappa}$ - ${\epsilon}$ turbulence model solved the complex three-dimensional nozzle flows perturbed by the secondary gas jet. The numerical code was validated by experiment. The results showed that the mach number distribution of circular and square nozzle are similar each other. As number of second injection hole increasing, a effect of deflection was decreased.

  • Stealthy, high maneuverability and super cruise abilities are required for the next generation fighter and unmanned aircraft. Thrust vector control technique currently come into use to meet these requirements. In this experimental study, axial and pitch thrust were measured and Schlieren visualization were carried out using the scaled two dimensional thrust vector nozzles under various pitch deflection angle, pitch flap length and height. From the study, we could get the supersonic flow characteristics and draw an optimum geometric configuration of the two dimensional thrust vector nozzle.

  • A numerical solution procedure has been developed to analyze the flow field resulted from the injection of a transverse jet through the divergent flap of a 2DCD nozzle for thrust vector control. The formulation employs the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in conservation law form and a two equation $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence model. Detailed numerical results are presented in this paper for the 2DCD nozzle over a range of secondary to primary injection mass flow ratios and nozzle pressure ratios.

  • The advantages of the SITVC (Secondary Injection for Thrust Vector Control) technique over mechanical thrust vectoring systems include a reduction in both the nozzle weight and complexity due to the elimination of the mechanical actuators that are used in conventional vectoring. The optimal operating conditions of SITVC were investigated using in-house developed compressible flow analysis codes. Numerical experiments were used to examine the impact of the thrust vector direction with a variety of injection positions, mass flow rates, and injection angles on the two-dimensional expansion cone of a supersonic nozzle. The computational results showed that the optimal position of the secondary injection, with the maximum deviation angle and side thrust, was where the oblique shock generated by the secondary injection reached the end of the nozzle exit.

  • An investigation of the thrust vectoring nozzle which can be applied to the supersonic variable exhaust system was performed. The maximum mach number of the model aircraft is 1.8 and mission radius is about 400Nm. The cycle analysis are performed at each operating regime of the aircraft and the specifications of the thrust vectoring nozzle were developed. Based upon the requirement of the thrust vectoring nozzle, two dimensional thrust vectoring nozzle were designed and flow analysis was conducted by deflection of the pitch and yaw angle.

  • In general, the performance of movable nozzle used for thrust vector control in solid rocket motor is estimated on the basis of the effective pivot of nozzle. However, it is nearly impossible to define the exact effective pivot by the mathematical model or experimental technique owing to pivot dynamics. In this paper, pivot dynamic properties were investigated by ADAMS simulation technique and trajectory of the exact effective pivot was modelled by the artificial neural network. Comparison of the proposed method was made with the virtual movable nozzle (computer simulation) to verify the method, and showed good agreement. Therefore, the proposed method will be applicable to predict the effective pivot of movable nozzle during bench or ground test.
