In this study, we present rotor dynamic analysis and operation test of a turbo expander for a hydrogen liquefaction plant. The turbo expander consists of a turbine and compressor wheel connected to a shaft supported by two hydrostatic radial and thrust bearings. In rotor dynamic analysis, the shaft is modeled as a rigid body, and the equations of motion for the shaft are solved using the unsteady Reynolds equation. Additionally, the operating test of the turbo expander has been performed in the test rig. Pressurized helium is supplied to the bearings at 8.5 bar. Furthermore, we monitor the shaft vibration and flow rate of the helium supplied to the bearings. The rotor dynamic analysis result shows that there are two critical speeds related with the rigid body mode under 40,000 rpm. At the first critical speed of 36,000 rpm, the vibration at the compressor side is maximum, whereas that of the turbine is maximum at the second critical speed of 40,000 rpm. The predicted maximum shaft vibration is 3 ㎛, whereas sub-synchronous vibration is not presented. The operation test results show that there are two critical speeds under the rated speed, and the measured vibration value agrees well with predicted value. The measured flow rate of the helium supplied to the bearing is 2.0 g/s, which also agrees well with the predicted data.
Previous studies postulated insignificant capillary rise (hc) effect above the water table (Hw) for unsaturated soils. In addition, these studies utilised dry unit weight above Hw. This paper, therefore, addresses the effect of these postulations on strength where the influence of hc using a modified upper bound approach, Discontinuity Layout Optimization (UNSAT-DLO) for a simulated soil was predicted. Two different parametric studies to model passive earth pressure and bearing capacity problems are carried out to provide an insight into the effect of capillary rise on strength. Significant increase in strength, owing to unsaturated conditions, was obtained where the maximum increase was when suction slightly less or greater than the air entry suction. On the other hand, the results showed a negative effect of hc. For example, up to 8.24% decrease in passive thrust (Pp) was obtained at Hw=0 m when hc rose 1 m from 0 m. To put this into perspective, this was equivalent to a decrease of about 2° in 𝜙 at Hw=0 m and hc =0 m in order to obtain the same result at hc =1 m. For the bearing capacity problem, the effect was seen to be higher, up to 18.4% decrease in N𝛾 was obtained when hc rose from 0 m to 2.5 m at Hw =0 m. In addition, the results revealed a negative influence of assigning dry unit weight above Hw or hc.. However, considerable increase in strength was obtained when unsaturated unit weight above hc was assigned.
It is the intention of this thesis to discriminate and investigate the cause of the shaft vibration of the vertical type hydroelectric power generator with respect to electrical, mechanical and hydraulic aspects, and to analyze the vibration which will occure by the each cause investigated above. In order to test the shaft vibration of No.1 generator in Hwachon, Korea new measurement method and measuring equipments were designed. In practice the shaft vibration of the generator was measured by above equipments and analyzed by the discriminative method. Detailed explanation for the designed measurement method and instruments is presented, and the results which I had tested three times for the generator No.1 in Hwachon power plant are added. As a appendix the mechanism and causes of the thrust bearing's wear and remarks for the runner are written.

An experimental study was performed to discover the effect of adsorbed moisture on the rolling resistance behavior of pure silver coated 52100 bearing steel. Plasma surface modifications were performed on the silver coated specimen to change the wetting characteristics. Experiments using a thrust ball beating-typed roiling test-rig were performed under vacuum, dry air and various tmmidity conditions. Results showed that the changes in the wetting characteristics influenced remarkably on the silver particle agglomeration and resulted in the different behavior of rolling resistance with humidity.
Array of micro-dimple on polyoxymethylene (POM) surface was fabricated using Q-switched Nd:YAG laser and its characteristics were studied in terms of heat affected zone (HAZ), dimple geometry, and the effect of specimen surface roughness. Process parameters such as lamp current, process time, and the stream of air in order to minimize HAZ and flow of molten polymer into cavity were extensively studied in this work. Dimple geometry was further investigated by 3-D optical microscopy to provide deep insight into morphological analysis near the dimples. This paper also presents the applicapability of micro-dimples in polymeric tribological system, such as a thrust bearing. Micro-dimples were expected to provide low coefficient of friction and enhanced lubricity at the sliding interface.

The fatigue life of support bearings is one of the most critical factors for the performance of a control rod driving mechanism. They are operated at high temperature and high pressure and especially lubricated with dramatically low viscosity water. The support bearing is made of standardized 440C stainless steel, and it supports thrust load including the weight of the driving system and external force. Friction and wear characteristics of this material operating under severe lubrication condition is not well known yet, although it is expected to be changed with respect to temperature and boundary pressure. So the friction characteristics are investigated in sliding conditions using the reciprocating tribometer which can simulate the operating conditions. Highly purified water is used as lubricant, and the water is heated up and pressurized. Friction farce on the reciprocating specimens is monitored by the load cells. The results of the experiments are presented in this paper.

The free vibration of a spinning flexible disk-spindle system supported by hydro dynamic bearings (HDB) in an HDD is analyzed by FEM. The spinning flexible disk is described using Kirchhoff plate theory and von Karman non-linear strain, and its rigid body motion is also considered. It is discretized by annular sector element. The rotating spindle which includes the clamp, hub, permanent magnet and yoke, is modeled by Timoshenko beam including the gyroscopic effect. The flexible supporting structure with a complex shape which includes stator core, housing, base plate, sleeve and thrust pad is modeled by using a 4-node tetrahedron element with rotational degrees of freedom to satisfy the geometric compatibility. The dynamic coefficients of HDB are calculated from the HDB analysis program, which solves the perturbed Reynolds equation using FEM. Introducing the virtual nodes and the rigid link constraints defined in the center of HDB, beam elements of the shaft are connected to the solid elements of the sleeve and thrust pad through the spring and damper element. The global matrix equation obtained by assembling the finite element equations of each substructure is transformed to the state-space matrix-vector equation, and the associated eigen value problem is solved by using the restarted Arnoldi iteration method. The validity of this research is verified by comparing the numerical results of the natural frequencies with the experimental ones. Also the effect of supporting structures to the natural modes of the total HDD system is rigorously analyzed.

This application study of a swash-plate type axial piston pump was concerned about the lubrication characteristics between cylinder barrel and valve plate which are the main rotating body and its opposite sliding part respectively. A computer simulation was implemented to assess bearing and sealing functions of the fluid film between cylinder barrel and valve plate. A numerical algorithm was developed to facilitate simultaneous calculations of dynamic cylinder pressure, 3 degree-of-freedom barrel motions considering inertia effect, and fluid film pressure assuming full fluid film lubrication regime. Central clearance, tilt angle, and azimuth angle of the rotating body were calculated for each time step. Surface waviness was found to be an influential factor due to the small fluid film thickness which can appear in flat land bearings. Five surface lays which can form on the lubrication surface in accordance with machining process were defined and analyzed using the simulation tool. Oil leakage flow and frictional torque in the fluid film between cylinder barrel and valve plate were also calculated to discuss in the viewpoint of energy loss. The simulation results showed that in actual sliding conditions proper surface non-flatness can make a positive effect on the energy efficiency and reliability of the thrust bearing.
It is currently well known that surface textures act as lubricant reservoirs, entrap wear debris, and hydrodynamic bearings, which can lead to certain increases in load-carrying capacities. Until recently, the vast majority of research has focused on parallel sliding machine components such as thrust bearings, mechanical face seals, piston rings, etc. However, most sliding bearings have a convergent film shape in the sliding direction and their hydrodynamic pressure is mainly generated by the wedge action. Following the first part of the present study that investigates the effect of groove position on the lubrication performances of inclined slider bearings, this paper focuses on the effects of groove depths and film thicknesses. Using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT, the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations are numerically analyzed. The results show that the film thickness and groove depth have a significant influence on the pressure distribution. The maximum pressure occurs at the groove depth where the vortex is found and, as the depth increases, the pressure decreases. There is also a groove depth to maximize the supporting load with the film thickness. The friction force acting on the slider decreases with deeper grooves. Therefore, properly designed groove depths, depending on the operating conditions, can improve the load-carrying capacity of inclined slider bearings as compared to the bearings without a groove.
