  • Interest in healthcare and wearable devices has been increasing recently. A strain sensor is required in various wearable devices. With respect to such devices, studies on resistance changes in strain sensors using flexible materials are in progress. However, the resistance of the rest area in a strain sensor should not change according to the applied strain. So, an electrode with resistance to stretching, bending, and torsion is required in such strain sensors. Tension, bending, and torsion can be realized through structural shape control, rather than by using flexible materials. Further, such an electrode that maintains electrical properties has been developed and manufactured. This electrode can be used in various applications such as foldable devices, e-papers, batteries, and multifunctional wearable devices.

  • The maintenance of skeletal muscle mass is very important for the prevention of life style-related diseases and the improvement of quality of life. It is well-known that resistance exercise and nutrition (especially amino acids) are the most effective interventions for maintaining skeletal muscle mass. It has been reported that many molecules are involved in the regulation of protein synthesis in response to resistance exercise and nutrition. Understanding the molecular mechanisms regulating muscle protein synthesis is crucial for the development of appropriate interventions. The role of intracellular signaling pathways through the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), a serine/threonine protein kinase in the regulation of muscle protein synthesis, has been extensively investigated for these years. Control of protein synthesis by mTOR is mediated through phosphorylation of downstream targets that modulate translation initiation and elongation step. In contrast, upstream mediators regulating mTOR and protein synthesis in response to resistance exercise and amino acid still needed to be determined. In this brief review, we discuss the current progress of intracellular mechanisms for exercise- and amino acid-induced activation of mTOR pathways and protein synthesis in skeletal muscle.

  • We investigated the optimal conditions for the manufacture of a rapid SiC heating element with increased durability for a flipchip bonder. In the moulding step prior to the sintering of the SiC heating element, a pressure of either 25 or 125 MPa wasapplied by uniaxial pressing to control the micropores; this was aimed at improving the resistance of the ultimate specimen. The moulded specimen was sintered by using a vacuum furnace with silicon as a sintering additive. The measurement of thehot modulus of rupture (HMOR) of the resulting SiC sintered body revealed that the HMOR was high. In addition, a methodfor protecting the heating element from the external environment was developed. A glassy coating layer was deposited on thesurface of the structure to improve the corrosion resistance of the sintered body; further, the performance of the coating layerwas verified through a neutral and acidic salt spray test. Finally, we established the optimal process conditions formanufacturing a rapid SiC heating element with improved corrosion resistance.

  • In pressure cooling system, produce were packed in vented box and cooled rapidly by producing a difference in air pressure on opposite faces of stacks of vented box. So, energy requirements and performance of pressure cooling system depended upon the air flow rate and the static pressure drop through packed produce in vented box. The static pressure drop across packed produce in vented box normally depended upon air flow rate, vent area of box and conditions of produce bed (depth, porosity, stacking patterns, size and shape of products) in box. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of vent area and air flow rate on airflow resistance of empty box and packed produce in vented box, and to investigate the relationship between the air flow resistance of packed products in vented box and sum of air flow resistance of empty box only and products in bulk only. Mandarins and tomatoes were used in the experiment. The airflow rate were in the range of 0.02~1.0$m^3$/s.$m^2$, the opening ratio of vent hole were in the range of 2.5~20% of the side area. The results were summerized as follows. 1. The pressure drops across vented box increased in proportion to superficial air velocity and decreased in proportion to opening ratio of vent hole. A regression equation to calculate airflow resistance of vented box was derived as a function of superficial air velocity and opening ratio of vent hole. 2. The pressure drops across packed produce in vented box increased in proportion to superficial air velocity and decreased in proportion to opening ratio of vent hole. 3. Because of the air velocity increase in the vicinity of vent hole in box, the airflow resistances of packed products in vented box were always higher than sum of air flow resistance of empty box only and products in bulk only. 4. Based on the airflow resistance of empty box and products in bulk, a regression equation to calculate airflow resistance of packed products in vented box was derived.

  • This paper is analyzed for the thermal characteristics(1 year) of the 6 components(DC breaker, DC filter(including capacitor and discharge resistance), IGBT(Insulated gate bipolar mode transistor), AC filter, AC breaker, etc.) of a photovoltaic power generation-based PCS(Power conditioning system) below 20 kW. Among the modules, the discharge resistance included in the DC filter indicated the highest heat at $125^{\circ}C$, and such heat resulting from the discharge resistance had an influence on the IGBT installed on the rear side the board. Therefore, risk priority through risk priority number(RPN) of FMEA(Failure modes and effects analysis) sheet is conducted for classification into top 10 %. According to thermal characteristics and FMEA, it is necessary to pay attention to not only the in-house defects found in the IGBT, but also the conductive heat caused by the discharge resistance. Since it is possible that animal, dust and others can be accumulated within the PCS, it is possible that the heat resulting from the discharge resistance may cause fire. Accordingly, there are two options that can be used: installing a heat sink while designing the discharge resistance, and designing the discharge resistance in a structure capable of avoiding heat conduction through setting a separation distance between discharge resistance and IGBT. This data can be used as the data for conducting a comparative analysis of abnormal signals in the process of developing a safety device for solar electricity-based photovoltaic power generation systems, as the data for examining the fire accidents caused by each module, and as the field data for setting component management priorities.

  • The kinetic change of electrical resistance of hairless mouse skin as a function of ionic strength of the bathing medium was determined from impedance measurements. After increasing (decreasing) the ionic strength of the bathing medium, resistance decreased (increased) continuously with time, finally reaching an equilibrium value. We have modelled this process, using nonsteady-state diffusion kinetics. The results show semi-quantitative correlation between theoretically derived and experimentally obtained values. Overall, this work provides further mechanistic insight into ion-conduction through the skin.

  • IPN (Interpenetrating Polymer Network) is a mixture of two or more crosslinked polymers with physically interlocked network structures between the component polymers. IPN can be classified as an alloy of thermosets and has the characteristics of thermosets such as the thermal resistance and chemical resistance and also has the characteristics of polymer alloys with enhanced impact resistance and amphoteric properties. The physical interlocking during the synthesis restricts the phase separation of the component polymer with chemical pinning process, thus the control of morphology is possible through variations of the reaction temperature and pressure, catalyst concentration and crosslinking agent concentration. Finely dispersed domain structure can be obtained through IPN synthesis of polymer components with gross immiscibility. In membrane applications, particularly for the separation of liquid mixtures, crosslinked polymer component with specific affinity to the permeate is needed. With the presence of the permeant-inert polymer component, the mechanical strength and the selectivity of the membranes are enhanced by restricting the swelling of the transporting polymer component networks.
