The purpose of this study was to investigate the density of thrips, and insecticidal resistance for effective control of Western flower thrips in greenhouse. The presence and density of the thrips was investigated using yellow colored-sticky trap in a cucumber field from May to August in Cheon-an. The results of the investigation revealed the existence of the following thrips species; Frankliniella occidentalis, F. intonsa, Thrips palmi, T. tabaci, Scirtothrips dorsalis, Microcephalothrips abdominalis, and T. nigropilosus. The predominant pest was found to be the western flower thrips. To survey the western flower thrips insecticidal resistance, we established the discriminating concentration (DC), recommended concentration (RC) and $2{\times}$recommended concentration ($2{\times}RC$) of nine insecticides; Emamectin benzoate EC, spinetoram SC, Chlorfenapyr EC, Spinosad SC, Cyantraniliprole EC, Acetamiprid WP, Dinotefuran WG, thiacloprid SC and thiamethoxam SC. The bioassay of about five local populations was conducted using the leaf-dipping method. In all local populations, insecticidal resistance in western flower thrips had not developed in emamectin benzoate EC (RC, $10.8{\mu}L\;L^{-1}$), chlorfenapyr EC (RC, $50.0{\mu}L\;L^{-1}$), spinetoram SC (RC, $25.0mg\;L^{-1}$), and spinosad SC (RC, $50.0mg\;L^{-1}$). However, insecticidal resistance in RC was found to have developed in cyantraniliprole EC (RC, $50.0{\mu}L\;L^{-1}$) and four insecticides of neonicotinoid type. Insecticidal activity of 95% or more was observed in each population when cyantraniliprole EC tested in $2{\times}RC$. However, the neonicotinoid types showed different insecticidal activity in $2{\times}RC$.

The effect of natural enemies on four major pests of hot pepper was tested in greenhouses. The aphids were successfully controlled by introducing three Aphidius colemani-banker plants, and releasing 23.3 wasps per $m^2$ on April 16 and 23 wasps per $m^2$ in a greenhouse of 660 $m^2$. To control thrips, Orius laevigatus was released twice, 3.0 bugs per $m^2$ at a time(May $11^{th}$ and June $12^{th}$). The thrips population was controlled within 0.3 thrips per flower during the growing season. To control two species of mites, Tetranychus kanzawai and Polyphagotarsonemus latus, and the silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, a total of 113.7 individuals of Amblyseius swirskii were released twice(May $11^{th}$ and $30^{th}$). The densities of B. tabaci and T. kanzawai were kept within 171.0 individuals/trap and 0.8 individual/leaf, respectively. P. latus was suppressed completely twelve days after release. The cost of the released natural enemies to control the four arthropod pests in this study was 420,000 Won per 660 $m^2$.
Ethyl formate (EF) is a rapid kill, environmentally safe, and low mammalian toxicity fumigant, registered to disinfest quarantine insect pests from imported agricultural products. A new concept for controlling insect pests of agricultural crops was tested in a fumigation chamber with EF. Control efficacy of and phyto-toxicity due to EF fumigation were evaluated against four pests (Thrips palmi, Bemisia tabaci, Myzus persicae, and Tetranychus urticae) and on seedlings of four fruit vegetables (FVs; yellow melon, cucumber, tomato, and pepper). Ethyl formate fumigation at a dose of 1.5 g m-3 for 12 h produced >93.3% mortality in T. palmi, B. tabaci, and M. persicae. However, T. urticae was tolerant to fumigation, showing only 20% mortality at 2.0 g m-3. In terms of concentration × time (CT) products, at least 8.9 g·h m-3 CT at 20 ± 1.5℃ was needed to achieve > 90% mortality against the three susceptible insect pests. Fumigation at 1.5 g m-3 for 12 h caused no phyto-toxicity to any of the four FV seedlings. Ethyl formate application, as a new disinfestation method in greenhouses, could be an alternative to reduce the use of conventional insecticides. However, further studies are needed to determine the efficacy of this method at different pest developmental stages and in different greenhouse environments. Additionally, research is needed to elucidate the phyto-toxicity of EF application at different growing stages of a wide variety of crops.
BACKGROUND: The tobacco whitefly(Bemisia tabaci Gennadius) and western flower thrips(Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande) seriously damaged to several greenhouse crops and transmitted plant viruses such as the Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus(TYLCV) and Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus(TSWV). Objective of this study was to elucidate exclusion effects of insect screen nets by various hole sizes and colors for control of the two insect pests in controlled environments such as a closed plant production system.METHODS AND RESULTS: The exclusion effects to various hole sizes of three other colors with 30 individuals of two insect pests was evaluated. B. tabaci was not showed not difference to different colors and sizes. F. occidentalis showed that 0.2 mm black screen was the most effective exclusion than other colors of 0.6 and 0.8 mm.CONCLUSION: The two insects were different reponses to various hole sizes of white and other color screen nets. It was proved that the 0.4 mm white screen net used in this experimental condition was suitable for exclusion of B. tabaci and 0.2 mm black forF. occidentalis.
The pest species occurring on the aboveground parts of Phalaenopsis orchids were studied for a period of two years (Aug. 2013 to June 2015) at 9 Phalaenopsis farms in Korea. In total, 10 species of insect pest were identified : Tenuipalpus pacificus Baker, Tyrophagus putrescentiae Schrank, Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande, Frankliniella intonsa Trybom, Thrips tabaci Lindeman, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood, Pseudococcus dendrobiorum Williams, Pseudococcus longispinus Targioni Tozzetti, Coccus hesperidum L., Limax marginatus $M{\ddot{u}}ller$. T. pacificus occurred in most of the farms surveyed in this study (6). The observation frequency of T. pacificus and F. intonsa were highest, they were observed in 10 out of 96 surveys. Although P. longispinus was only observed to occur on two farms, their observation frequency (9 observations, 9.4%) and density (2-289 per 20 plants) were high. Thus, it seems that T. pacificus, F. intonsa, and P. longispinus are the major pests affecting Phalaenopsis orchid farms in Korea.

This study reports the results of natural enemy application against four insect pests on greenhouse sweet pepper in winter cropping system. Orius laevigatus ($3.3/m^2$) was released at two different times (Nov. 2005 & Feb. 2006) to control Frankliniella occidentalis, western flower thrips (WFT). Throughout the cropping season, the lowest level recorded of WFT was less than 2.0 individuals per yellow sticky trap. Amblyseius swirskii ($232.3/m^2$) was released four times (Nov. 2007 ~ Aug. 2008) to control Bemisia tabaci, tobacco whitefly (TWF). Until July 2008, TWF population had been suppressed lower than 6.6/trap. Phytoseiulus persimilis ($44.5/m^2$) was released seven times (Apr. 2008 ~ Aug. 2008) to control Tetranychus kanzawai, tea red spider mite (TRSM). As a result, TRSM population was suppressed lower than 1.7/1eaf. To control aphids, Aphidius colemani ($9.5/m^2$) was released seven times (Oct. 2004 ~ Jan. 2005), with the transplantation of banker plants ($5.5pot/660m^2$). As a whole, aphid's population has been successfully reduced to less than 2.0/leaf.
Biological-control-based-integrated-pest-management of major pests occurring on sweet pepper in greenhouse during summer season was tried. As many as 2.1 Orius laevigatus per $m^2$ were released in two times on June 6 and 19, and the population of thrips was kept under control and accordingly the damage was negligible throughout the season. To control aphids, a total of 0.8 Aphidius colemani per $m^2$ were released in four times, 0.2 of them at a time, flonicamid on May 14 and July 18 and pymetrozine on June 14 and September 4 were sprayed on the spots of high aphid occurrence to reduce the release of the wasp, and the density of aphids was kept under control. Whitefly was controlled successfully by releasing a total of 343.4 Amblyseius swirski per $m^2$ in nine times, 38.1 of them at a time, from May 9 until November 12 and dinotefuran was sprayed on November 12 when the density of whitefly increased up to 200 per trap. Tetranichus kanzawai was controlled by both Phytoseiulus persimilis which was released a total of 44.4 per $m^2$ in five times 8.9 of them at a time from May 23 to September 10, and the A. swirski which was released for the control of whitefly.
