To investigate the control effect of insect pests by natural enemies, sticky traps were used in commercial tomato greenhouses in Chun-cheon and the experiment fields of Gangwon-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, Republic of Korea using semi-forcing culture (February to June). We selected low toxicity pesticides, environment-friendly agricultural materials (EFAM), and natural enemies of the study species, combinations of which have been previously used in farms to control insect pests. In this study, Trialeurodes vaporariorum and thrips, which are major agricultural insect pests, were studied in experimental greenhouses. The adult T. vaporariorum population was observed in mid-April and the population of thrips showed occurrences in early April. Regarding seasonal fluctuation, T. vaporariorum peaked in mid-May and thrips peaked after June. one insecticide, spiromesifen suspension concentrate (SC); one fungicide, cyazofamid SC; and two EFAMs containing neem tree extract were shown to be slightly toxic to Encarsia formosa and Orius laevigatus. The results of this study could be used to develop management models using natural enemies of control the insect pests; T. vaporariorum and thrips in semi-forcing culture of tomato.
This study was carried out for looking into the status of susceptibility of vinyl house insect pests to insecticides. The Thrips (Thrips palmi and Frankliniela occidentalis), Mites (Tetranychus urticae), Aphids (Aphis gossypii) and Whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) were captured at various areas where the host crop was being cultivated and the susceptibility level of each pest insect was investigated. The susceptibility of each pest insect varied by insect species and areas where they were caught. The tested insecticides showed good control effect to palm thrips in 2000, but in 2003 showed decrease of effect to them. Western flower thrips showed low susceptibility to neonicotinoids, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, but high to chlorfenapyr, spinosad, emamectinbenzoate and fipronil. Antibiotic insecticides, abamectin and milbemectin, and chlorfenapyr were very effective on mite control and dicofol still had good effectiveness to it despite of long year use. No aphid species showed resistance to pyrethroid and carbamate insecticides. Relatively new insecticides such as imidacloprid, spinosad, pymetrozine were effective to whitefly, but not were organophosphates, carbamates and pyrethroids.
This study was conducted to describe unrecorded five species of thrips from leaf litter and dead wood in Korea. Described three species of Elaphrothrips 1,2,3, Podothrips sasacola and Pentagonothrips antennalis are for the first time in Korea. Specimens of thrips were collected in the area of Suweon, Jeju-Do., Mt. Seolag and Mt. Jiri in Korea, during the period from 1980 to 1981.
This study was conducted to improve control system of insect pests, especially western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, and two-spotted spider mites, Tetreanychus urticae, of rose greenhouses. Density of thrips was relatively higher in yellow flowers than in pink or redflowers, while there was no difference in density of two-spotted spider mites by flower colors. In pest control by an automatic monorail sprayer, 89% labor and 18.2% chemical savings, as compared to the conventional high pressure spray method, were achieved without lowering the pest control effectiveness. By using an adhesive agent in combination with acaricide, adhesion of chemical to crops increased by 25% and control effect on two-spotted spider mites increased by 20.5% as compared acaricide spray alone.

This study was carried out to investigate the pest species and their damage on Asparagus officinalis. Field surveys were conducted in asparagus greenhouse in Jeju, for four years from 2007 to 2010. Total of 16 pest species belonging to 5 orders were found as follows: Thrips tabaci, Thrips hawaiiensis, Adoxophyes honmai, Spodoptera litura, Spodoptera exigua, Helicoverpa armigera, Mamestra brassicae, Ascotis selenaria, Ectropis excellens, Geisha distinctissima, Aphis gossypii, Myzus persicae, Anomala albopilosa, Crioceris quatuordecimpunctata, Acusta despecta sieboldiana and Deroceras reticulatum. Among them, T. tabaci frequently occurred and damaged asparagus plants during the whole growing seasons. C. quatuordecimpunctata and snails caused severe damages on asparagus shoots in spring harvest season. In mid-late seasons, aphids and lepidopteran species occurred and attacked asparagus plants. Of the lepidopteran pests, S. litura, S exigua and H. armigera belonging to Noctuidae occurred moderately and fed on asparagus plants. And the pest control strategy in asparagus cultivation was discussed based on the present results.
Mass trapping of the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, has been considered as an option to control this pest. This study applied the commercial lures to the hot pepper-cultivating greenhouses and assessed the enhancement of the attracting efficiency by adding to sticky traps. There was no color difference in the attracting efficiency between blue and yellow sticky traps. However, the installation position of the traps was crucial in the greenhouses. The more thrips were captured within host cropping area than outside areas of the crop. In vertical trap position, it was the most optimal to install the traps at the crop crown. Using these installation parameters, the yellow sticky traps captured approximately 1% population of the thrips. To enhance the trapping efficiency, the commercial lures containing aggregation pheromone or 4-methoxybenzaldehyde were added to the yellow sticky traps. However, these commercial lures did not significantly enhance the trapping efficiency compared to the yellow sticky trap alone. In contrast, Y-tube olfactometry assays confirmed the high efficiency of the aggregation pheromone or another plant volatile (methyl isonicotinate) to attract the thrips. Interestingly, these lure components had lower attracting efficiencies compared to the hot pepper flowers. The high attractive efficiency of the flowers was supported by the observation that the commercial lure was effective to enhance the trapping efficiency of the yellow sticky trap against F. occidentalis in Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum) field without any flowers. This study indicates the limitation of the commercial lures in application to hot pepper fields for the mass trapping of F. occidentalis. It also suggests active volatile component(s) from hot pepper flowers to attract F. occidentalis.

By releasing predatory mite, Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot, with 25 individuals per cucumber plant in a commercial greenhouse (1,600 $m^2$), the population of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), was kept under the economic threshold level. The initial thrips population of 18.3 individuals per leaf decreased to 2.1 individuals per leaf after four weeks, while the number of A. swirskii reached to 16.6 individuals per leaf. It was also observed that at a point where the thrips occurred in high density of about 34.3 individuals per leaf, A. swirskii population built up on the lower part of cucumber plant first, but as time passed the predatory mites moved upward to the top of the plant and aggregated.

The cultivation area and use of genetically modified (GM) crops have been increased continuously over the world and concerns about the potential risks of GM crops are also increasing. One of the major concern in risk assessment is the possible development of hybrids through interspecific and intergeneric crosses with related species. This study was conducted to investigate the pollinator have an influence on insect-mediated gene transfer from GM soybeans. Hybrid was induced from GM soybeans by honeybee and western flower thrips, and non-GM soybeans were used as pollen receptor. The analysis for gene-flow was conducted by herbicide selection, immunostrip test, and PCR analysis. In the result of the analysis, three hybrids were detected on the distance 15, 75, 105 cm from pollen source in western flower thrips treatment. In honeybee treatment, one hybrid was detected in the farthest distance (300 cm). These results suggested honeybee and western flower thrips have a possibility they can transfer the introduced gene from GM soybeans to non-GM soybeans.
