  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the case of a bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss patient whose hearing had improved by Korean medical treatment combined with threshold sound. Methods : A woman diagnosed with bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss has treated with Korean medical interventions(acupuncture combined with electromagnetic stimulation and pharmacoacupuncture) and threshold sound conditioning(TSC) for 20 weeks. Pure tone audiometry(PTA) was performed for the evaluation. Results : The average hearing level has improved from mild to normal level. The level of tinnitus has decreased from VAS 10 to VAS 4. Conclusions : We observed an improvement in a bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss patient's hearing and hereby suggest the possibility of Korean medical treatment and TSC's ameliorating effect on sensorineural hearing loss.

  • It is well known that fish hear a wide frequency range of sound using both laterial line and inner ear, and the sound is probably the most effective channel for long-range communication underwater than any other stimulus. The auditory threshold of svenband grouper, Epinephelus septem fasciatus was determined by conditioning method using a sound coupled with electric shock in a tank. The audio-signals and electric shock used in the experiment were pure tones of 100 to 1000Hz and DC 6n.The response of fish to the sound was observed by ECG intervals from precordial leads method (V1·V2 method). The auditory threshold curve for sevenband grouper was V-shaped, with most sensitive threshold at 350Hz in the range of 100~1000Hz. The Sevenband grouper were more sensitive to sounds of 200~400Hz than to adjacent frequencies.

  • Noises from ceiling mounted air-conditioning units were recorded in various actual situations such as offices, classrooms and libraries. Eight specimens of air-conditioners from major domestic and foreign manufacturers' were investigated in this study. A head and torso simulator was located 1.5 m beneath the air-conditioner panel for the measurements and sound pressure levels of the recording sounds were varied from 28 to 55 dBA with 3 dB steps for subjective evaluations. A total of 88 stimuli was randomly presented to subjects using a headphone system in semi-anechoic chamber. Two-categorized (noisiness and amenity) nine-point scale was used as evaluation method. The third scale ('point 3') among the nine-point scale was set as the threshold of allowable level of the air-conditioning sounds in consideration of the real situations. The results indicate that the allowable sound pressure level is around 34 dBA for both noisiness and amenity categories.

  • In order to obtain the fundamental data for the marine ranch, this paper was carried out to investigate cortisol variation in blood according to adapted time in the measurement of auditory threshold. The groups were adapted at the experimental tanks for 0.5, 1, 3 and 6 hours, respectively. At the results, cortisol concentration had a deep connection with adapted time. In particular, cortisol concentration in the experimental group of 1 hour was significantly increased, whereas others showed no difference comparing with the control group. When classical conditioning method with the sound coupled with a delayed electric shock was given after the adapted time of 1 hour and 6 hours, the rate of the conditioning completion for 6 hours was higher than that of 1 hour. Therefore, this suggests that the sufficient adapted time was required for the accurate auditory threshold.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the auditory threshold of the scorpion fish Sebastiscus marmoratus which was suitable for Marine ranching by a classical respiatory conditioning technique using a sound coupled with a delayed electric shock. The thresholds were determined by analyzing the electrocardiogram. The auditory thresholds were observed among the 12 fish with much difference from 100Hz to 300Hz. The audible range of the scorpion fish extended from 80 to 800Hz with a peak sensitivity of 90㏈(0㏈= $1\mu$Pa) at 100Hz. As the frequency became higher than 300Hz, the auditory threshold increased rapidly. The scorpion fish was least sensitive to sound of 500Hz among 6 frequency points and the value was about 12㏈.

  • A experiment was carried out to measure the auditory threshold of dusky spinefoot Siganus fuscescens(Houttuyn) in the coast of Cheju Island by heartbeat conditioning technique using pure tones coupled with a delayed electric shock in order to investigate the hearing ability to audible sound. The audible range of dusky spinefoot extended from 80Hz to 800Mhz with a peak sensitivity at 200Hz. The mean auditory threshold levels of dusky spinefuot were 102dB, 96dB, 92dB, 95dB, 105dB and 121dB respectively in the range of measurement frequencies, As the frequency became higher than 300Hz, the auditory threshold increased rapidly.

  • Developing base data on luring fish schools into netting position by the use of underwater audible sound on japanese parrot fish Oplegnathus fasciatus found in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, S. Korea. Auditory threshold was determined by the heartbeat condition technique using pure tones coupled with a delayed electric shock. The audible range of japanese parrot fish extended from 80 Hz to 500 Hz with a peak sensitivity at 200 Hz. The mean auditory thresholds at the frequencies of 80 Hz, 100 Hz, 200 Hz,300 Hz and 500 Hz were 104 dB, 95 dB, 91 dB, 99 dB and 113 dB, respectively. As the frequency became higher than 200 Hz, the auditory threshold increased almost linearly with increasing frequency. Critical ratios of fishes measured in the presence of masking noise in the spectrum level range of 69$\~$78 dB (0 dB re 1$\mu$Pa/$\sqrt{Hz}$) ranged from 21 dB to 40 dB at test frequencies. The noise spectrum level at the start of masking was about 70 dB within the test frequency range. The sound pressure level of 100$\~$200 Hz recognized by japanese parrot fish under the ambient noise is above 91 dB and the critical ratio for them is above 21 dB.

  • This paper is second part on the auditory thresholds and fish behaviors to the underwater sounds for luring of target species at the set-net in the coast of Cheju. In order to obtain the critical ratio of yellow tails(Seriola quinqueradiata) and the emission level of underwater sound for luring of them, we make experiments to measure the auditory threshold of them using conditioning with electric shock. In state that the white noise with 10dB higher sound pressure level than ambient noise is emitted, the auditory thresholds of yellow tails are measured with 100~116.5dB and they are higher than those in state of no emission of white noise by the masking effects of it. Although sound pressure level of background noise go down, the auditory thresholds go up with frequency above than 300Hz.The critical ratio of yellow-tails in frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz, 500Hz, 800Hz are 46dB, 40dB, 50dB, 52dB, 60dB, 70dB respectively. The sound pressure level of which the signal sound is recognized by yellow tails under the ambient noise is above 100dB and the critical ratio of them is above 40dB.
