  • Acoustic field in steady-state is characterized by a Helmholtz equation. The transmission characteristics of acoustic wave devices is however influenced by the presence of the mean flow in the medium. The effect of the mean How introduces additional terms in the equation. In the present paper, two approaches are considered. One is that the equation is directly discretized by FEM for one-dimensional and the axisymmetric case. Another is that the equation is first transformed into the standard Helmholtz equation which is solved by BEM. The numerical demonstrations are made for the axisymmetric FEM and the three-dimensional BEM modeling. The numerical examination for a straight circular duct is first considered. The solutions are compared wish the analytical ones. The examination is then extended to the case when the mean How is locally present in a muser with expansion chamber.

  • This study described computer aided die design system for cold forging of non-axisymmetric parts. To design the die of cold forging. an integrated approach based on a rule-base system and commercial F. E. code were adopted. This system is implemented on the personal computer and its environment is a commercial CAD package named as AutoCAD. The system includes four modules. In the initial data input module, the variables which are necessary to design of die are inputted by user and die material are selected from the database. In the analysis and redesign module, stress distrubution action on the designed die is analyzed by commercial FEM code NISA II. The designed die is modified to prevent failure in both states of stress free and pressurizing. The developed system provides powerful capabilities for die design of non-axisymmetric parts.

  • For severe accident assessment of reactor pressure vessel (RPV), it is important to develop an accurate model that can predict transient thermo-mechanical behavior of the RPV lower head under the given condition. The present study revisits the lower head failure with two- and three-dimensional finite element models. In particular, we aim to give clear insight regarding the effect of the three-dimensionality present in the distribution of the thickness and thermal load of the lower head. For a rigorous validation of the result, both the OLHF-1 and the OLHF-2 tests are considered in this study. The result suggests that the three-dimensional effect is not negligible as far as the failure location is concerned. The non-uniformity of the thickness distribution is found to affect the failure location and time. The thermal load, which may not be axisymmetric in general, has the most significant effect on the failure assessment. We also observe that the creep property can affect the global deformation of the lower head, depending on the applied mechanical load.

  • The central regions of barred-spiral galaxies contain interesting gaseous structures such as dust lanes located at the leading side of the bar and nuclear rings that are sites of intense star formation. Our previous studies showed how gas structures form under the influence of a non-axisymmetric bar potential and temporal/spatial behavior of the star formation in nuclear rings. However, previous works were limited to 2-dimensional infinitesimally-thin, unmagnetized and isothermal disks. To study effects of cooling/heating, vertical motions of gas structures and magnetic field, we use Mesh-Free magneto-hydrodynamic simulation code GIZMO. We find that temporal variations of the star formation rates in the nuclear ring in the three-dimensional model are overall similar those in the previous two-dimensional results, although the former shows more violent small-scale fluctuations near the early primary peak. We will present our recent results about evolution of gaseous structures and star formation rate compare with results of previous studies.

  • The axisymmetric free vibrations of transversely isotropic magnetoelectroelastic laminated circular plates are studied. Based on the three-dimensional governing equations of magnetoelectroelastic medium, the state space equations of laminated circular plates are obtained. By using the finite Hankel transform and rendering the free terms left by the transform in terms of the boundary quantities, the solutions of the state space equations are given for two kinds of boundary conditions. The frequency equations of the free vibration are derived using the propagator matrix method and the boundary conditions at top and bottom surfaces. By virtue of the inverse Hankel transform, the mode shapes are also determined. Since the solutions strictly satisfy the governing equations in the region and the boundary conditions at the edges, they are the three-dimensionally exact. Finally, the natural frequencies of such plates are tabulated and compared with those of the piezoelectric and elastic plates in the numerical example.

  • The characteristics of aerodynamic drag for Transonic Vehicle in Evacuated Tube was investigated using computational fluid dynamics. At first, parametric study on the system was performed according to the Mach number of the vehicle's speed ($Mach_v$), evacuated pressure of the tube ($Pre_t$), and blockage ratio (BR) between the vehicle and tube via axisymmetric flow analysis; the $Mach_v$ ranged from 0.3 to 1.0. The $Pre_t$ was 100, 1,000 and 10,000 Pa and the BR was 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4. In the calculations, the aerodynamic drag of the vehicle was larger when the BR and the pressure became larger. Concerning the $Mach_v$, the drag coefficient ($C_d$) became the maximum when the $Mach_v$ was near the Kantrowitz limit and decreased, which showed the typical transonic flow pattern. Then, three dimensional flow analysis was performed by changing the $Mach_v$ from 0.3 to 1.0 and setting the BR and the $Pre_t$ as 0.34 and 100 Pa, respectively by referring the Hyperloop Alpha documentation. From the calculations, the $C_d$ from three dimensional flow simulations were somewhat larger than those of axisymmetric ones because of the eccentricity of the vehicle inside the tube. However, the pattern of $C_d$ according to the $Mach_v$ was compatible with that of axisymmetric ones.

  • In order to investigate the effect of nozzle on stress concentration in pressure vessels, three dimensional finite element analyses were performed. The results were compared with those for corresponding two dimensional axisymmetric finite element analyses. A three dimensional finite element model with a surface crack was also designed to evaluate the effect of internal pressure and heat transfer on crack face, and the resulting stress intensity factors from the finite element analyses were compared with those for ASME Sec. XI and Raju-Newman's stress intensity factor solution. As a result, the validity of currently available stress intensity factor solutions for a surface crack was reviewed in the presence of geometrical complexity, heat transfer and internal pressure.

  • In Part 1, the flame structure of the counterflow nonpremixed flames computed by using Fire Dynamics Simulator was compared with that of OPPDIF for different concentrations of methane in the fuel stream. In this study, comparisons were made for the global strain rate that is an important parameter for diffusion flames for further evaluation of FDS. At each of the three fuel concentrations, $20% CH_4+ 80% N_2, 50% CH_4 + 50% N_2, 90% CH_4 + 10% N_2$ in the fuel stream, the temperature and axial velocity profiles were investigated for the global strain rate in the range from 20 to $100s^{-1}$. Changes in flame thickness and radius were also compared with OPPDIF. There was good agreement in the temperature and axial velocity profiles between the axisymmetric simulations and the one-dimensional computations except for the regions where the flame temperature reach its peak and the axial velocity rapidly changes. The simulations of the axisymmetric flames with FDS showed that the flame thickness decreases and the flame radius increases with increasing global strain rate.
