In this paper, a new measuring system is :proposed which can measure the fine 6-DOF displacement of rigid bodies. Its measurement principle is based on detection of laser beam reflected from a specially fabricated mirror that looks like a triangular pyramid having an equilateral cross-sectional shape. The mirror has three lateral reflective surfaces inclined 45$^{\circ}$ to its bottom surface. We call this mirror 3-facet mirror. The 3-facet mirror is mounted on the object whose 6-DOF displacement is to be measured. The measurement is operated by a laser-based optical system composed of a 3-facet mirror, a laser source, three position-sensitive detectors(PSD). In the sensor system, three PSDs are located at three corner points of a triangular formation, which is an equilateral triangular formation tying parallel to the reference plane. The sensitive areas of three PSDs are oriented toward the center point of the triangular formation. The object whose 6-DOF displacement is to be measured is situated at the center with the 3-facet mirror on its top surface. A laser beam is emitted from the laser source located at the upright position and vertically incident on the top of the 3-fatcet mirror. Since each reflective facet faces toward each PSD, the laser beam is reflected at the 3-facet mirror and splits into three sub-beams, each of which is reflected from the three facets and finally arrives at three PSDs, respectively. Since each PSD is a 2-dimensional sensor, we can acquire the information on the 6-DOF displacement of the 3-facet mirror. From this principle, we can get 6-DOF displacement of any object simply by mounting the 3-facet mirror on the object. In this paper, we model the relationship between the 6-DOF displacement of the object and the outputs of three PSDs. And, a series of simulations are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The simulation results show that the proposed sensing system can be an effective means of obtaining 3-dimensional position and orientation of arbitrary objects.
The displacement measuring systems of slope ground surface are very expensive instruments and have disadvantages concerning installing, maintaining and surveying. The measuring works are very dangerous. Recently, simple systems are required to measure the displacement of slope ground surface in stages of cutting and maintaining slope. In this study, the mechanism of Softcopy Photogrammetry is applied to measure the displacement of slope ground surface. Three dimensional data of the slope ground surface can effectively be obtained in order to analyze slope stability. Computer Program, DIMA (Design IMmage Analysis), including the reformation process of a contour line was developed. As a result of this study, countermeasure and instruction standards of the displacement of slope ground surface before and after slope failure are established. Also, disadvantages of the existing system can be complemented.
The high-temperature steam pipes of thermal power plants are subjected to severe conditions such as creep and fatigue due to the power plant frequently being started up and shut down. To prevent critical pipes from serious damage and possible failure, inspection methods such as computational analysis and online piping displacement monitoring have been developed. However, these methods are limited in that they cannot determine the life consumption rate of a critical pipe precisely. Therefore, we set out to develop a life assessment system, based on a three-dimensional piping displacement monitoring system, which is capable of evaluating the life consumption rate of a critical pipe. This system was installed at the "M" thermal power plant in Malaysia, and was shown to operate well in practice. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the increase safety of piping systems by minimizing stress and extending the actual life of critical piping.
It was previously introduced a new displacement measuring technique using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) that remotely samples the surface of an object using laser pulses and generates the three-dimensional (3D) coordinates of numerous points on the surface. In this paper, for an assessment of the capabilities of the measuring technique about existing structures, the field tests for vertical displacement measurement of an existing long span steel box-girder are experimentally carried out. The performance of the technique is evaluated by comparing the displacements obtained from TLS system and displacements directly measured from linear variable displacement transducer (LVDT).

Inspecting the dimensional accuracy of a car-body in assembly line is a very important process to assure high productivity. Now there exist two common inspecting methods in practice. One is to measure a sampled car-body with three dimensional measuring machine, and the other is to measure car-body with three dimensional measuring machine, and the other is to measure car-body in assembly line using many sensors fixed to a large jig frame. The formal method takes too long to inspect a sampled car-body of a same sort, and cannot therefore give an useful error trend for the whole production. On the other hand, the latter lacks flexibility and is very cost-intensive. By using industrial robots and sensors, an in-line Car-Body Measuring(CBM) system which ensured high flexiblity and sufficient accuracy was developed. This CBM cell operates in real production line and measures the check points by the non-contact type using camera and laser displacement sensor(LDS). This system can handle about 15 Measuring points within a cycle time of 40 seconds. A process computer controls whole process such as data acquisition file handling and data analysis. Robot arms changes in length due to ambient temperature fluctuation affecting the measuring accuracy. To compensate this error, a robot arm calibration process was developed.

This paper describes the analysis of measuring error of on the machine measuring(OMM) system which can directly measure the three dimensional machined free surface dimension using scanning probe on milling machine. 21 inch TV shadow mask mould was measured using PTP(point to point)measurement algorithm at pallet clamped and unclamped state on OMM system, and using coordinate measuring machine(CMM) one after another. The OMM system was evaluated probe error, stylus contact error, center shift error, repeatability and so on. Consequencely, the conclusion derived that elastic displacement of pallet had effect on measuring error mainly, and pallet design and setup method would be important.

In order to evaluate the safety of navigation at sea and the safety of mooring ship on berthing, it is necessary that the wave and wind induced ship dynamic motion should be measured in real time domain for the validity of theoretical evaluation method such as sea-keeping performance and safety of mooring. In this paper, the basic design of sensors is discussed and some system configurations were shown. The developed system mainly consists of 4 kinds of sensors such as three dimensional accelerator, two dimensional tilt sensor, two displacement sensors and azimuth sensor. Using the this measuring system, it can be obtained the 6 degrees of freedom of ship dynamic motions at sea and on berthing such as rolling, pitching, yawing, sway, heave, surge under the external forces.

An industrial product is designed and fabricated, followed by the inspection process in order to check whether it is dimensionally tolerable or not. The machining process produces a part such as a mold or die, in which the three-dimensional coordinate might be measured by a CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) for assessment of its dimension. It is not ignorable, however, that a CMM measurement requires a lot of operating time and cost, which has led to many studies on the OMM system. The OMM system can be categorized into contact and non-contact types, and each of which has its own strengths and weaknesses. Non-contacting types generally utilize structured lights, sounds or magnetic fields. Though they show rather poor performance in positional accuracy, the measuring speed is faster than the contacting probes. This paper presents the development of an OMM system based on a non-contacting laser displacement sensing apparatus and CAD model. The system is composed of software modules of center-aligning and measuring, which has been operated and verified on a NC machining center on a shop floor.
Whether stress-absorbing elements are functional in an implant system has been an issue of interest in oral implantology. The unique feature of the IMZ implant system is the planned imitation of the stress-distributing function of the structural unit of the tooth, periodontium, and alveolar bone through the use of an intramobile element(IME). The purpose of this study was to compare the difference in the displacement and the stress distibutions of IMZ implant with a polyoxymethylene(POM) or a titanium IME under static load. Two dimensional finite element analysis(FEA) was applied for this study and two finite element models were created. PATRAN program(DPA Co.,USA), a software for FEA, and SUN-SPARC2GX(SUN Co., USA), a workstation computer, were used. $1Kg/mm^2$ of static load was loaded individually on each three point of crown of implant prosthesis ; central fossa(load 1), mesial cusp tip(load 2), distal cusp tip(load 3), The displacements of X- and Y-axis and total displacement were measured at mesial and distal cusp tips, mesial and distal points between crown and IME, and implant apex. The von Mises stress was measured at mesial and distal points between crown and IME, mesial and distal points between IME and TIE, mesial and distal alveolar crest, the mesial and distal midpoints of implant, and implant apex. The difference in resultant values were compared and evaluated statistically using paired t-test. The results were as follows : 1. Under the load 1, all the displacement of implant with titanium IME at 5 measuring points was larger than that of with POM IME except total and Y-axis displacement at implant apex. And the differences in stress distributions with POM and titanium were varied. 2. Under the load 2, all the displacement of implant with titanium IME at 5 measuring points was larger than that of with POM IME except X-axis displacement at distal cusp tip. And the differences in stress distributions were varied. 3. Under the load 3, all the displacement of implant with titanium IME at 5 measuring points was larger than that of with POM IME except Y-axis displacement at mesial cusp tip. And the differences in stress distributions were varied. 4. For the displacement, there was significant difference statistically only in total displacement (P<0.1), but was no significant difference in X- and Y-axis displacement(P>0.1). For the stress, there was no significant difference among the compared values.
Recently, the terrestrial laser scanner is considered as useful measurement equipment for acquiring a three-dimensional data. In this study, a terrestrial laser scanner which has +/- 2.5cm accuracy is examined whether the terrestrial laser scanner is reliable to present the tendency of landslide movement. The test area is covered by protection blocks, and they are being moved by landslide movement. Landslide movement was detected by measuring the movement of protection blocks. Totally three scenes of test area were acquired during 2004 and 2006. The three scenes of the protection blocks were registered in global coordinate system, then the landslide movement was investigated. The landslide movement detected in the three scenes was evaluated by comparing with landslide movement measured by a total station. Although the measurement accuracy of landslide using the terrestrial laser scanner was worse than the total station, the scanning data showed the tendency of landslide movement of the test area.
