This paper presents the comparison of the earth resistivity obtained from the measurements made with the three-electrode and four-electrode fall-of-potential techniques. The ${\rho}-a$ curve obtained from Wenner four-electrode method in undisturbed earth is in good agreement with the ${\rho}-l$ curve obtained from the three-electrode method based on the fall-of- potential method. However, The ${\rho}-a$ curve in disturbed earth with moisture and freezing is significantly different with the ${\rho}-l$ curve. The ${\rho}-a$ curve is considerably sensitive to the freezing and the moisture present in the earth surface compared to the ${\rho}-l$ curve. Thus to determine the actual earth resistivity, it is necessary to take into account the earth surface conditions when measuring the earth resistivity.

Laryngeal evoked EMG is the objective and quantitative method to measure the innervation of laryngeal muscle. If there is a mobility disorder of vocal cords, the cause and location of neural lesion co be understood by the laryngeal evoked EMG and if there is a vocal cord paralysis, the degree of recovery and the policy of treatment can be determined by it. Recently, the studies of reinnervation after recurrent laryngeal nerve injury have been actively carried out. Laryngeal evoked EMC is useful to these studies. The aim of study is to know whether noninvasive methods for stimulating the recurrent laryngeal nerve and for recording of compound action potential(CAP) using surface electrode are as useful as the invasive method using needle electrode. We obtained EMG of laryngeal muscle by various stimulating and recording methods : 1) Direct nerve stimulation by placing nerve cuff electrode made out of silastic tube and platinum wire and recording by insertion of hook wire electrode into posterior cricoarytenoid(PCA) and thyroarytenoid(TA) muscles, respectively. 2) Recording of compound action potential by surface electrode after stimulation of recurrent laryngeal nerve by the insertion of 27 gauge of needle electrode. 3) Recording of compound action potential by surface electrode after stimulating the recurrent laryngeal nerve by transcutaneous blunt rod electrode at tracheoesophageal groove. The amplitude, duration and latency of the CAP evoked by recurrent laryngeal nerve stimulation were compared among the three groups. The amplitude of CAP was smallest in the group recorded from posterior cricoarytenoid and hyroarytenoid muscle, and that recorded by surface electrode after stimulation by needle electrode was largest. The difference in amplitude between the group by hook wire recording and the two groups by surface electrode recording was significant statistically. There is no significant difference in duration and latency among three groups. Since the waveform of CAP from all three methods has similar duration, latency, we concluded that noninvasive method is a useful as invasive methods.

Impedance method was carried out to design the electrode that can measure the void fraction of the bubbly flow in pool reservoir. To find out the optimum electrode shape, Styrofoam-tests were performed in a specially designed acrylic reservoir. Three kinds of electrodes were designed to compare the characteristics of water-air flow. The resistance was increased as the void fraction increased and the capacitance was decreased as the void fraction increased. The resistance is a main parameter to express the nature of the water-air flow in impedance method. Almost all the values of impedance were involved in resistance. The degree of deviation from the mean-resistance values showed reasonable results. Electrode type-I expressed excellent results among the three electrode shapes. The impedance values in void fraction 0-10% were similar to those of Maxwell's equation. But the impedance values in void fraction 10-20% were not similar to those of Maxwell' equation because of the edge effect near electrode.

In this paper, an ozonizer, which can generate individual and superposed silent discharge, using three-phase voltage has been designed and manufactured. The ozonizer consists of 3 electrodes(Central Electrode, Internal Electrode and External Electrode) and 2 gaps(gap between Central Electrode and Internal Electrode, gap between Internal Electrode and External Electrode). Ozone is generated according to voltage supplying method to each electrode by individual silent discharge and three-phase superposed discharge. The characteristics of ozone generation were investigated with variation of discharge power and the quantity of supplied gas($O_2$). In case of individual silent discharge, the maximum values of ozone concentration, ozone generation and ozone yield were obtained between internal electrode and external electrode, and its values were 2300[ppm], 570[mg/h] and 745[g/kWh] respectively. Each maximum values was 5039[ppm], 1773[mg/h] and 851[g/kWh] respectively, when three-phase superposed silent discharge was employed. Therefore, characteristics of ozone generation with three-phase voltage are improved compared with single-phase voltage because silent discharge is generated continuously.

Multi-discharge type ozonizer(MDO) using superposed silent discharge has been designed and manufactured. It consists of three electrodes( central electrode, internal electrode, and external electrode ) and double gaps( gap between central electrode and internal electrode, gap between internal electrode and external electrode ). Therefore, ozone is generated by superposing silent discharges generated between the gaps respectively. And the MDO consists of three types of superposed discharge ozonizers according to voltage appling method for each electrode ; A.C. high voltages are applied two of three electrodes with phase difference of 180[˚], the other electrode is a ground. This paper describes that discharge and ozone generation characteristics of MDO which comprising central electrode and internal electrode applied A.C. high voltages with phase difference of 180[˚] respectively, and the grounded external electrode. As a result, the maximum ozone concentration, generation, and yield can be obtained 10208[ppm], 6.4[g/h], and 280[g/kwh] respectively.

PURPOSES : The pole electrode method damaged the concrete pavement on inserting the electrode into the pavement surface. This study examined the feasibility of the flat electrode method to observe the concrete pavement instead of the pole electrode method and analyzed the resistivity characteristics of the concrete by performing laboratory tests. METHODS : The resistivity of the concrete specimens manufactured with three different mixing ratios (38.50%, 39.50%, and 40.50%) were measured using the pole and flat electrode methods according to the concrete age (7 and 28 days) and electrode spacing (20 mm, 30 mm, and 40 mm). RESULTS :In both pole and flat electrode methods, the resistivity increased with increasing fine aggregate proportion regardless of the concrete age. The resistivity measured at a concrete age of 28 days was slightly larger than that measured at 7 days. In the case of a concrete age of 7 days, the resistivity measured by the flat electrode method was larger than that measured by the pole electrode method. The difference disappeared at 28 days. CONCLUSIONS :The results suggest that the flat electrode method can replace the pole electrode method because the resistivity measured by both methods was similar. Hence, the development of a technology to apply the flat electrode method to actual concrete pavement is necessary.

This paper describes the analysis technique of risk voltage around grounding electrode by new touch and step voltage measurement methods. We have analyzed three techniques for risk voltage measurement, such as footprint-electrode method, test-probe method, and simulated-personnel method. We have selected test-probe method considering applicability of site. In order to reduce error related to the location of the auxiliary electrode, we propose a new approach to perform risk voltage measurement with minimum errors and short auxiliary electrode distances. Field tests were carried out at a grounding grid. It can be concluded that the proposed method will be satisfactory for risk voltage measurement.

This paper presents performance improvement of CO gas sensor signal conditioner for early fire warning system. The warning system is based on the CO sensor and its advanced signal conditioning modules network that employ electochemical gas sensor. The electochemical has advantage of having a linear output and operating with a low consumption and fast response. This electrochemical gas sensor contains a gas membrane and three electrodes(working, counter, reference electrode) in contact with an electrolyte. To use a three-electrode sensor, a voltage has to be applied between the working and the reference electrode according to the specification of the sensor. In this paper, we designed these requirements that should be considered in temperature compensation algorithm and electrode measurement of CO sensor modules by using advanced signal conditioning method included 3-electrode. Simulation and experimental results show that signal conditioner of CO sensor module using 3-electrode have a advantage linearity, sensitivity and stability, fast response etc..

An electronic paper display was fabricated by injecting electronic ink, including white and black particles coated by positive and negative charge control agents (CCA), respectively, into closed cells surrounded by micro-barriers. These two types of charged, colored particles are easily damaged or their charging value can be changed by the injection process; therefore, the electrical and optical properties of the image panel fabricated by the injection method were estimated in this study. The active particle-loading method, proposed as a new electronic ink injection process, was applied, and the electro-optical properties of the resulting three-electrode-type e-paper image panel were analyzed. The reflection rate of the white image-panel fabricated with our new injection method was 24.7%, while that of the same panel fabricated with a previously reported injection method was 19.8%. In addition, the response time was improved by about five times compared to those reported in other publications.
