The hydraulic design optimization and performance analysis of mixed-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion has been carried out using mean streamline analysis and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. In the present study, the conceptual design optimization has been formulated with a non-linear objective function to minimize the fluid dynamic losses, and then the commercial CFD code was incorporated to allow for detailed flow dynamic phenomena in the pump system. Newly designed mixed-flow model pump has been tested in the laboratory. Predicted performance curves by the CFD code agree very well with experimental data for a newly designed mixed-flow pump over the normal operating conditions. The design and prediction method presented herein can be used efficiently as a unified hydraulic design process of mired-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion.
The accurate prediction of leakage flow through the brush element of brush seal at the steam turbine is important to find optimum design parameters for increasing an efficiency. In this study, CFD analysis method using commercial software FLUENT is proposed to predict leakage through the brush element. Since the brush element has a complex three-dimensional shape with many bristle assemblies, it is difficult to analyze the flow field. Therefore, if the brush element is assumed to be porous medium region, the analysis time can be shortened. Two determination methods of resistance coefficients of the Darcian porous medium equation are suggested. By comparing the 2D and 3D CFD analysis results for the leakage of the brush element using the two resistance coefficient determination methods, the effectiveness of the analysis for the porous medium assumption is proved.
Steady flow bench test is a practical, powerful and widely used test in most engine manufacturers to give a design concept of a new engine. In order to use steady data as a performance index, it is necessary to build some database, which can correlate the port characteristics with engine data. However, it is very hard to investigate all port and valve shapes with experimental tools. The steady flow scheme is relatively simple and its results are bulk ones such as flow rate and momentum of flow. Therefore a CFD code can be easily applied to the port evaluation. In this study, the steady flow test was simulated through two and three-dimensional analysis on intake port design for comparing with experimental data and confirming the feasibility of applying analytic method. For this purpose, the effect of valve curvature on flow rate was estimated by a CFD code. There results were compared with those of real steady flow tests. As a result, the 2-D analysis described the phenomena qualitatively well, and also the results of 3-D analysis were almost consistent with experimental data.
The air distribution duct with multiple outlets is an essential part of automotive air-conditioning system In a bus. The estimation of airflow rate in an automotive air-conditioning duct is typically very complicate due to large variations in cross-sectional area and abrupt changes in flow direction, as well as unbalanced distribution of the flow. In this paper, the flow characteristic in a duct with multiple outlets is investigated through experiment, CFD simulation and a one-dimensional simulation. Numerical simulations have been performed for two simplified air conditioning ducts with multiple outlets used in a medium bus. The three dimensional Navier-Stokes code was used to evaluate the overall pressure, velocity Held, and distribution rate at each diffuser according to the change of various design parameters such as ratio of cross-sectional area and radius of bifurcated region. In addition, a one-dimensional program based on Bernoulli equation was developed to obtain optimized diffuser area required to equalize discharge flow rate at each outlet. As a result of this study, optimized diffuser area of design variable by one-dimensional program was very reasonable as compared to the trend deduced from CFD Simulation. Therefore, the simple and convenient one-dimensional analysis developed in this study can be applied in practical design procedure for air-conditioning duct.
The flow simulations around ducted-prop of tilt-duct aircraft were conducted in this study. For the investigation of aerodynamic characteristics of various configurations of duct, the axisymmetric flow calculation method combined with actuator disk model for prop were used. The rapid two-dimensional calculation and fast grid generation enable aerodynamic analysis for various duct configurations in a very short time and anticipated to active role in optimal configuration design of duct exposed to various flight modes. For the case of angle of attack or tilt angle, the three dimensional flow calculation is conducted using the three dimensional grid simply generated by just revolving the axisymmetric grid around center axis. Through the three dimensional calculation around duct, the aerodynamic effectiveness of duct as a lifting surface in airplane mode was investigated. The flow calculations around the control vane (wing) installed in the rear section of duct were conducted The aerodynamic data of wing were compared with the data of the ducts to evaluate the aerodynamic effectiveness of ducts.
The adaptive wavelet method is studied for the enhancement of computational efficiency of three-dimensional flows. For implementation of the method for three-dimensional Euler equation, wavelet decomposition process is introduced based on the previous two-dimensional adaptive wavelet method. The order of numerical accuracy of an original solver is preserved by applying modified thresholding value. In order to assess the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, the method is applied to the computation of flow field around ONERA-M6 wing in transonic regime with 4th and 6th order interpolating polynomial respectively. Through the application, it is confirmed that the three-dimensional adaptive wavelet method can reduce the computational time while conserving the numerical accuracy of an original solver.
Lately, ocean nuclear power plants have attracted attention as one of diverse uses of nuclear power plants. Because ocean nuclear power plants are movable or transportable, it is necessary to analyze the thermal hydraulics in a moving frame of reference, and computer codes have been developed to predict thermal hydraulics in large moving systems. The purpose of this study is to incorporate a three dimensional dynamic motion model into the SPACE code (Safety and Performance Analysis CodE) so that the code is able to analyze thermal hydraulics in an ocean nuclear power plant. A rotation system that describes three-dimensional rotations about an arbitrary axis was implemented, and modifications were made to the one-dimensional momentum equations to reflect the rectilinear and rotational acceleration effects. To demonstrate the code's ability to solve a problem utilizing a rotational frame of reference, code calculations were conducted on various conceptual problems in the two-dimensional and three-dimensional pipeline loops. In particular, the code results for the three-dimensional pipeline loop with a tilted rotation axis agreed well with the multi-dimensional CFD results.
Panel methods are essential tools for analyzing a fluid-flow problem around complex three dimensional bodies, but they lack ability to solve viscous effects. On the other hand, CFD methods are considered as powerful tools for analyzing fluid-flow characteristics including viscosity. However, they also have short falls, requiring more computing time and showing different results depending on the selection of turbulence models and grid systems. In this paper a hybrid scheme combining a panel method and a CFD method is suggested. The scheme adopts a panel method for far-field solution where viscous effects are negligible and a CFD method for the solution of RANS equations in near-field where viscous effects are relatively strong. The intermediate region between the far-field and near-field is introduced where the calculated field point velocities by the panel method are given as boundary velocities for the CFD method. To verify the scheme, calculated results, by a panel method, a CFD method and the hybrid scheme, for a two dimensional foil section are compared. The suggested hybrid scheme gives reasonable results, while computation time and memory can be dramatically reduced. By using the hybrid scheme efforts can be concentrated for the local flow near the leading and trailing edges, by providing more dense grid system, where detailed flow characteristics are required.
The behavior and flow characteristics of the floating wave energy converter were analyzed by using CFD in this study. The average significant wave height was confirmed as 0.5~2.0m from the Korean coastal sea area. This study was carried out by selecting a range of 1.0~1.6m in the wave height to simulate the operations of realistic wave energy converter system. The principle of a piston wave maker was applied in order to produce periodic wave. The behavior of the wave energy converter and the state of the wave overtopping according to the generated periodic wave were confirmed through the unsteady three-dimensional flow analysis. It was found that the wave overtopping rate according to the generated periodic wave was in range of the 11.6~30.0 kg/s.

A conceptual design of a three-surface strike fighter was studied and stealth performance was taken into account to enhance survivability and battle effectiveness. CATIA was used to design the aircraft's three-dimensional prototype model and the weapon carriage arrangement was also studied. The aircraft's RCS characteristics and distributions under X, S, C, and L bands were simulated using the RCSPlus software, which is based on the PO method. Pressure and velocity distributions of the flow field were also simulated using CFD. A turbulence model was based on standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ function and N-S functions were used during the CFD computation. Lift coefficients, drag coefficients, and lift-to-drag ratio were obtained by aerodynamic simulation. The results showed that: (1) the average value of head-on RCS between ${\pm}30^{\circ}$ is below -3.197 dBsm, and (2) the lift coefficient is 0.34674, the drag coefficient is 0.04275, and the lift-to-drag ratio is 8.11087 when the attack angle is $2.5^{\circ}$.
