  • The objective of this research work is to investigate into the three-dimensional temperature distribution using quasi steady-state heat transfer analysis fur the case of the laser cutting of CSP 1N sheet using high power CW Nd:YAG laser. The laser heat source is assumed as a volumetric heat source with a gaussian heat distribution in a plane. Through the comparison of the results of analyses with those of the experiments, the optimal finite element model is obtained. Finally, characteristics of the three-dimensional heat transfer and temperature distribution have been estimated by the optimal finite element model.

  • High-speed flight vehicle have various cavities. The supersonic cavity flow is complicated due to vortices, flow separation and reattachment, shock and expansion waves. The general cavity flow phenomena include the formation and dissipation of vortices, which induce oscillation and noise. The oscillation and noise greatly affect flow control, chemical reaction, and heat transfer processes. The supersonic cavity' flow with high Reynolds number is characterized by the pressure oscillation due to turbulent shear layer, cavity geometry, and resonance phenomenon based on external flow conditions, The resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect aerodynamic performance and stability. In the present study, we performed numerical analysis of cavities by applying the unsteady, compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations with the ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The cavity model used for numerical calculation had a depth(D) of 15mm cavity aspect ratio(L/D) of 3, width to spanwise ratio(W/D) of 1.0 to 5.0. Based on the PSD(Power Spectral Density) and CSD(Cross Spectral Density) analysis of the pressure variation, the dominant frequency was analyized and compared with the results of Rossiter's Eq.

  • A three-dimensional elastoplastic constitutive model, also known as a UH model (Yao et al. 2009), was developed to describe the stress-strain relationship for normally consolidated and over-consolidated soils. In this paper, an acoustic tensor and discriminator of bifurcation for the UH model are derived for the strain localization of saturated clays under undrained and fully and partially drained conditions. Analytical analysis is performed to illustrate the points of bifurcation for the UH model with different three-dimensional stress paths. Numerical analyses of cubic specimens for the bifurcation of saturated clays under undrained and fully and partially drained conditions are conducted using ABAQUS with the UH model. Analytical and numerical analyses show the similar bifurcation behaviour of overconsolidated clays in three-dimensional stress states and various drainage conditions. The results of analytical and numerical analyses show that (1) the occurrence of bifurcation is dependent on the stress path and drainage condition; and (2) bifurcation can appear in either a strain-hardening or strain-softening regime.

  • Computational and experimental investigations on the three-dimensional flowfield through an automotive cooling fan are carried out in this work. Steady, incompressible, three-dimensional, turbulent flow through a rotating axial-flow fan is analyzed with Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations and standard k-.epsilon. turbulence model. The governing equations are discretized with finite-volume approximations in non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. Computational static pressures on the casing wall agree well with the experimental data which are measured in this work. And, they are sensitive to the change of tip clearance. The flowfield is not significantly affected by the thickness of the blade. The k-.omega. model gives the static pressure rise on the casing wall which is similar to that with the k-.epsilon. model.

  • This study reviews qualitatively the flow characteristics around th tidal gap during seadike closures using a three-dimensional model for shallow water equations. The Princeton Ocean Model(POM) was adapted and applied to the Sihwa Seadike which was closed in 1994. The simulated flow patterns around the gap showed that tidal velocities increase with the cross-sectional area during ebb tide. The accelerated flow extended to wider zones passing the gap, and shock waves were generated. Vertical tidal velocity profiles were affected as the bottom scours developed beyond normal conditions.

  • Unsteady-state temperature distributions and thermal deformations of a spindle system are studied in this paper. Three dimensional model is built for analysis, and the amount of heat generation of bearing and the thermal characteristic values including heat transfer coefficient are estimated. Temperature distributions and thermal deformations of a model are analyzed using the finite element method and the termal boundary values. Numerical results are compared with the measured data. The results show that thermal deformations and temperature distributions of a high precision spindle system can be reasonably estimated using the three dimensional model and the finite element method.

  • Three-dimensional simulator for thermal oxidation process is developed. The simulator is consisted by two individual module, one is analytic-model module and the other is numerical-model module. The analytic-model which uses simple complementary-error function guarantees fast calculation in prediction of multi-dimensional oxidation process. The numerical-model which is based on boundary element method (BEM), has a good accuracy and suitable for various process conditions. The results of this study show that oxide growth is retarded at the corner of hole structure and enhanced at the corner of island structure. These effects are reson of different distribution of oxidant diffusion and mask stress. The utility of models and simulator developed in this study is demonstrated by using it to predict not only traditional shape of LOCOS but also process effects in small geometry.

  • In this study, we present the computational analysis of cardiac arrhythmias that is the major cause of human sudden cardiac death. First, electric excitation and condution in one dimensional cardiac tissue model is solved and the results on condution block are represented. In two dimensional model, vortex daynamics in cardiac tissue is analyzed to delineate the breakup phenomenon inducing ventricular fibrillation. We also simulated a three dimenional heart model to see the vortex breakup and explained the mechanism in physiological aspect.

  • The objective of this research work is to investigate into heat transfer characteristics of the laser cutting of CSP 1N sheet using high power CW Nd:YAG laser. In order to investigate the heat transfer characteristics, three dimensional quasi stationary and steady-state heat transfer analysis has been carried out. The laser heat source is assumed as a volumetric heat source with a gaussian heat distribution in a plane. Through the comparison of the results of analyses with those of experiments, the proper finite element model has been obtained. In addition, characteristics of the three-dimensional heat transfer and temperature distribution have been estimated by the finite element model. Finally, the minimum temperature at the center for cutting of the material has been estimated.
