High-speed flight vehicle have various cavities. The supersonic cavity flow is complicated due to vortices, flow separation, reattachment, shock waves and expansion waves. The general cavity flow phenomena includes the formation and dissipation of vortices, which induce oscillation and noise. The oscillation and noise greatly affect flow control, chemical reaction, and heat transfer processes. The supersonic cavity flow with high Reynolds number is characterized by the pressure oscillation due to turbulent shear layer, cavity geometry, and resonance phenomenon based on external flow conditions. The resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect aerodynamic performance and stability. In the present study, we performed numerical analysis of cavities by applying the unsteady, compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations with the ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The cavity model used for numerical calculation had a depth(D) of 15mm cavity aspect ratio (L/D) of 3, width to spanwise ratio(W/D) of 1.0 to 5.0. Based on the PSD(Power Spectral Density) and CSD(Cross Spectral Density) analysis of the pressure variation, the dominant frequency was analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's Eq.

The objective of this study is to validate the performance of the current $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model for a single-phase turbulent natural convection, which has been considered an important phenomenon in nuclear safety. As a result, the natural convection problems in the 2D and 3D cavities previously studied are calculated by using the ANSYS Fluent software. The present results show that the current $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulent model accounting for the buoyancy effect is in good agreement with the previous results for the natural convection problems in the 2D and 3D cavities although some improvements should be required to get better prediction.

A microgravity survey was applied for detecting and mapping karstic cavities over limestone area at Gaeun. The gravity data were collected at about 1, 100 stations by 4 m interval. The density distribution beneath the profiles was drawn by two dimensional inversion based on the minimum support stabilizing functional, which generated better focused images of density discontinuities. We also imaged three dimensional density distribution by growing body inversion. The density image showed that the cavities were dissolved, enlarged and connected into a cavity network system.

In this paper, a feasibility on a ground-penetrating radar for detecting subsurface cavities near buried pipes has been investigated. The experimental setup was implemented by employing an impulse ground-penetrating radar system, a xy Cartesian coordinate robot, an underground material filled tank, a metal pipe and a simulated cavity model. In particular, the simulated cavity model was constructed by packing Styrofoam chips and balls, which have both similar electrical properties to an air-filled cavity and a solid shape. Through typical three experiments, B-scan data of the radar have been acquired and displayed as 2-D gray-scale images. According to the comparison of B-scan images, we show that the subsurface cavities near the buried pipes can be detected by using the radar survey.
The present study was designed to help elucidate the effect of glass ionomer cements on the exposed dental pulp by means of histologic examination. A total of 40 cavities of class V were prepared on the teeth of 4 dogs with exposure of 1mm in diameter on the bases of them. 20 cavities were filled with glass ionomer cement as the experimental group and the other 20 cavities were filled with zinc oxide eugenol cement as the control group. The dogs were sacrificed at one, two, three, and four weeks after filling, and the specimens were routinely prepared and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin. The obtained microscopic findings were as follows: Inflammatory cell infiltrations were observed in control in 1 week, which decreased markedly with time. In all control groups, hemorrhage around exposed pulp tissue and coagulation change of pulp were observed. Secondary dentin formation and thickened predentin were observed in 4 week cases, and the recovery of pulp tissue was favorable on the whole. Inflammatory cell infiltration was observed in all GIC groups. Proliferation of blood vessel and congestion were observed with coagulation changes around the exposed pulp tissue. Secondary dentin formation and thickened predentin were observed in 3 weeks. In the experimental 4 week case, secondary dentin formation was evident. On the whole, pulpal irritation of glass ionomer cement was relatively severe. Recovery of pulp tissue in GIC groups was less favorable compared with that of ZOE groups.
Background: This study evaluated which CT findings could be used to predict the negative results of a sputum smear in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and multiple cavities. Methods: Thirty-eight patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and multiple cavities on CT were classified into 2 groups: smear-positive (n = 30) and -negative (n = 8). The CT findings were reviewed retrospectively. The maximum internal diameter of the largest cavity, the number of the cavities and lobes with cavities, and the characteristics of the associated findings such as consolidation, ground glass opacity, micronodules and nodule were accessed. The number of cavities above 20 mm in the maximum internal diameter and a necrotizing pneumonia-like pattern were also evaluated. Result: The maximum internal diameter and number of cavities was $32.23{\pm}17.66mm$ and $15.50{\pm}11.12mm$ (p = 0.0042), and $5.53{\pm}3.17$ and $2.43{\pm}1.13$ (p = 0.0002) in the smear-positive and -negative group, respectively. Three or more cavities were observed at 76.7% and 12.5% in the smear-positive and -negative group, respectively (p < 0.005). There were $2.00{\pm}1.34$ and $0.25{\pm}0.46$ (p = 0.001), and $1.5{\pm}1.50$ and $0.38{\pm}0.52$ (p =0.0016) lobes with consolidation and ground glass opacity in the smear-positive and -negative group, respectively. A necrotizing pneumonia-like pattern was observed in 43.3% of the smear-positive group only. The other findings were similar in both two groups. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value for the presence of at least a finding of consolidation, more than 3 cavities or the largest cavity > 20 mm in the maximum internal diameter were 100%, 62.5%, 90.9%, and 100%, respectively. Conclusion: Two cavities 20 mm or less in the maximum internal diameter without consolidation on CT might be associated with a negative result of the sputum smear in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and multiple cavities.

This study investigated the effects of laser irradiation on the exposed pulp and the possibility of direct pulp capping with the $CO_2$ laser. Results were obtained from the observation of the residual pulpal healing process. Class V cavities on 48 anterior teeth from 8 adult dogs were prepared and pulp chambers were intentionally opened with dental explorer. The control group consisted of 16 teeth. $Dycal^{(R)}$(Caulk Co., U.S.A.) was applied to exposed site once bleeding was stopped. Cavities were sealed with $I.R.M^{(R)}$. In the experimental group 1 (16 teeth), laser(LASERSAT $CO_2^{(R)}$, Satelec Co.) was irradiated on the exposed pulp. The laser procedure followed the manufacturers recommendations for the treatment of human pulp(1.5 Watts, 0.2 seconds, unfocused), and cavities were sealed with $I.R.M^{(R)}$. In the experimental group 2 (16 teeth), laser was irradiated on the exposed pulp in a more powerful dosage(5.0 Watts, 0.2 seconds, unfocused), and cavities were sealed with $I.R.M^{(R)}$. Two dogs were sacrificed immediately after experiment and the others were sacrificed at intervals of one, three, and eight weeks respectively. All teeth were routinely processed and the pulpal tissues and odontoblastic layers were observed by the light microscope. The results were as follows; 1. In the control group, the initial mild inflammation had improved to normal by week eight. An active formation of reparative dentin was observed at week three, and at week eight, a firm dentin bridge was present beneath the $Dycal^{(R)}$ with no inflammatory responses in the remaining pulp. 2. In the experimental group 1, immediately following irradiation, the superficial shape of the exposed pulp was crater-like. And it was lined with the coagulated layer, $60{\sim}70{\mu}m$ in width. Moderate inflammatory pulpal conditions existing at week one were improved to mild at week eight. And from the week three specimens, a reparative dentin formation was observed in the adjacent odontoblastic layer of the exposed site. A dentin bridge at the exposed site, however, did not form during the experimental period. 3. In the experimental group 2, the width of the coagulation layer lining the crater was $70{\sim}130{\mu}m$. Beneath the coagulated layer, severe inflammatory pulpal responses were observed at week one, and conditions did not improve during the experimental period.
Fluctuations in groundwater level are the major cause of ground subsidence in the abandoned limestone mine. In this study, evaluation of groundwater flow under three different cases of natural condition, aggregate-filling, temporary drainage in groundwater-saturated limestone mine cavities was executed by 3-dimensional analysis. In the case of aggregate-filling, although the water level both in the upper ground of mine cavities and an agricultural watershed was elevated, it was lower than the water level fluctuation of an agricultural water use and rainfall and the flow rate was similar to the flow rate of natural condition. In the case of temporary drainage, as the water level in the upper ground of mine cavities and an agricultural watershed decrease rapidly and the flow rate has increased by 25times, so the risk of ground subsidence increased.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cavity configurations on the marginal leakage of class 5 glass ionomer cement and composite resin restorations. Four types of cavities such as saucer shape. notch shape. combined shape(notch shape occlusally and saucer shape gingivally). and U shape were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of 80 extracted premolars(40 cavities for each shape). Occlusal cavity margins were placed at enamel and cervical margins were placed at dentin. 10 cavities of each shape were restored with Ketac Fil as a conventional glass ionomer cement. Fuji II LC improved as a resin modified glass ionomer cement, Z 100 as a hybrid composite resin. and Tetric Flow as a flowable composite resin (40 cavities for each material). After thermocycling, teeth were immersed in 5% basic fuchsin solution for 6 hours and sectioned longitudinally in a buccolingual direction through the center of the restoration. The dye penetrations at the tooth restoration interface were examined by stereomicroscope. The Result were as follows 1. In saucer shape, notch shape and combined shape, composite resin restorations showed lesser leakage than glass ionomer restorations(p<0.05) and in U shape. Tetric Flow showed the least marginal leakage and others were decreased as Z 100. Fuji II LC improved, Ketac Fil in that order. There were statistically significant difference between Tetric Flow and Fuji II LC improved. Ketac Fil and between Z 100 and Ketac Fil(p<0.05). 2. In Ketac Fil restoration group, saucer shape showed the highest marginal leakage and U shape showed the least marginal leakage and others were decreased as notch shape, combined shape in that order. There were statistically significant difference between saucer shape and combined shape, U shape and between notch shape and U shape(p<0.05). 3. In Fuji II LC improved restoration group, U shape showed the least marginal leakage. There were statistically significant difference between U shape and other three shapes(p<0.05). 4. The cavity configuration had no significant effect on marginal leakage of composite resin restorations(p>0.05).
Scaled model tests were performed to investigate the stability of a foundation located above limestone cavities. Cavity shape was assumed to be an ellipse having 1/3 for the ratio of minor to major axis lengths. 12 different test models which have various depths, locations, inclinations, sizes and numbers of cavity were experimented and they were classified into 5 different groups. Crack initiation pressure, maximum pressure, deformation behaviors, failure modes and subsidence profiles of test models were obtained, and then the influences of those parameters on the foundation stability were investigated. No cavity model showed a general shear failure, whereas the models including various cavities showed the complicated three different failure modes which were only punching failure, both punching and shear failures, and double shear failure. The stability of foundation was found to be decreased as the cavity was located at shallower depth, the size and number of cavity were increased. Differential settlements appeared when the cavity was located under the biased part of foundation. Furthermore, subsidence profiles were found to depend on the distribution of underground cavities.
