  • Rap1 is a key regulator of cell adhesion and migration. Although increasing evidence indicates that the Rap1 signaling pathway is involved in the process of bone remodeling, the mechanism by which Rap1 regulates osteoblastic differentiation and cell adhesion remains unknown. Here, we investigated the morphological characteristics and osteoblastic differentiation of cells expressing constitutively activated form of Rap1A (Rap1ACA) or Rap1 GTPase activating protein Rap1GAP and found that activated Rap1 induces osteoblastic differentiation and cell adhesion as well as cell spreading. When osteoblastic differentiation was induced, Rap1ACA cells showed considerably higher levels of calcium deposits than the wild-type and Rap1GAP-overexpressing cells did. Rap1ACA cells showed increased spreading and size, as well as strong cell adhesion and significantly decreased growth rates. F-actin staining using phalloidin revealed several thin thread-like filopodia around the protrusions in Rap1ACA cells, which possibly contribute to the increased cell adhesion.

  • Due to the advancements in the capabilities of smart devices and home networks, we are able to easily access multimedia contents stored in a home server. In this paper, we present a wireless media content sharing mechanism for home networks that utilizes UPnP-based DLNA technology. We also present a novel Peer-to-Peer content sharing system that is able to operate on the client as well as server. Our system supports multiple push/pull services simultaneously via a multi-thread technique, and our intuitive user interface facilitates ease of use. Future studies would explore the feasibility of implementing our system in a multi-hop environment or providing a community-wide service.

  • MPAs(Massively Parallel Architectures) should address two fundamental issues for scalability: synchronization and communication latency. Dataflow architecture faces problems of excessive synchronization overhead and inefficient execution of sequential programs while they offer the ability to exploit massive parallelism inherent in programs. In contrast, MPAs based on von Neumann computational model may suffer from inefficient synchronization mechanism and communication latency. DAVRID (DAtaflow/Von Neumann RISC hybrID) is a massively parallel multithreaded architecture which takes advantages of von Neumann and dataflow models. It has good single thread performance as well as tolerates synchronization and communication latency. In this paper, we describe the DAVRID architecture in detail and evaluate its performance through simulation runs over several benchmarks.

  • TCP is a well-known communication protocol which is widely used for reliable message transmissions. The urgent mechanism of TCP plays a key role to transmit messages with a high priority. If a high priority message occurs at the transmitting node, the urgent mechanism informs the receiving node about the presence of a high priority message prior to its transmission so that the receiving node can be prepared for handling this message in advance. This implies that the existing urgent mechanism of TCP does not guarantee an immediate or faster delivery of the high priority message itself. Therefore, the ability of priority-based transmission is required on TCP not only to ensure reliable transmissions of normal messages but also to offer a differentiated service according to the priority of message. This paper presents a priority-based transmission algorithm over TCP using a priority queue in a multi-threaded environment. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is explored using an experimental setup in which various messages with different priority levels are transmitted.

  • Network Control Platform(NCP) and Qualify of Service Switch(QSS) are being developed to realize centralized control and management technology, which is essential for guaranteeing traffic engineering and service quality in a next generation network. This paper adopts a parallel mechanism, and a thread and object pool to achieve high-speed connection management in the existing SNMP interface between NCP and QSS. We built up a connection management test-bed in laboratory environment to validate the functionality of high-speed connection management. We also measured and analyzed a performance of connection setup delay and a completion ratio using the test-bed. We ascertain that the parallel mechanism and the object pool are the most important performance parameters to achieve high-speed connection management in the SNMP interface between NCP and QSS.

  • In order to solve the difficulties of parameter settings in SA algorithm, an improved practical SA algorithm is proposed by employing the threading techniques, appropriate software structures, and dynamic adjustments of temperature parameters. Threads provide a mechanism to realize a parallel processing under a disperse environment by controlling the flux of internal information of an application. Thread services divide a process by multiple processes leading to parallel processing of information to access common data. Therefore, efficient search is achieved by multiple search processes, different initial conditions, and automatic temperature adjustments. The proposed are methods are evaluated, for three types of Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) (random-tour, fractal-tour, and TSPLIB test data)are used for the performance evaluation. The experimental results show that the computational time is 5% decreased comparing to conventional SA algorithm, furthermore there is no need for manual parameter settings. These results also demonstrate that the proposed method is applicable to real-world vehicle routing problems.

  • As the products such as HDD, Notebook, PDA, and Mobile Phone become smaller and thinner, the radius of threads as well as holes for assembling those products become smaller, even down to 1mm. To produce such small holes and thread efficiently, multi tapping is highly necessitated. However the multi tapping characteristics is not well known because its complicated cutting mechanism and thus the quality of the produced holes and threads is not well studied yet. In this paper, experiments have been conducted for small-radius threads using M2 and M2.6 and M3 cold forming tap to investigate multi tapping process using several useful signal such as torque and Z-axis encoder pulse. The surface and profile of the machined threads have been magnified and observed through a SEM.

  • General purpose computing applications have not yet been thoroughly explored in procedure level speculation, especially in the light-weighted profiling way. This paper proposes a light-weighted profiling mechanism to analyze speculative parallelism characterization in several classic general purpose computing applications from SPEC CPU2000 benchmark. By comparing the key performance factors in loop and procedure-level speculation, it includes new findings on the behaviors of loop and procedure-level parallelism under these applications. The experimental results are as follows. The best gzip application can only achieve a 2.4X speedup in loop level speculation, while the best mcf application can achieve almost 3.5X speedup in procedure level. It proves that our light-weighted profiling method is also effective. It is found that between the loop-level and procedure-level TLS, the latter is better on several cases, which is against the conventional perception. It is especially shown in the applications where their 'hot' procedure body is concluded as 'hot' loops.

  • Active object is an Independent runnable unit which is scheduled by CPU in creation time. In this paper, we define the active object and suggest ART(Active object RunTime support systems) which controls creation and execution of the active object. ART can Provide users locational transparency and support easy method call mechanism. We also designed a communication model among active objects and implemented a communication method to make the distributed programing possible. The implementation target platform of ART is an embedded system which has only limited resources and runs in the distributed computing environment.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this review is to introduce the recent advance in allergic rhinitis and to provide help in establishing strategy and selection of drugs for Korean medical treatment of allergic rhinitis. Methods : We searched articles about allergic rhinitis comprehensively in PubMed, CNKI, JStage, KISTI. And in order to reflect clinical situation, we also reviewed some profession's writing for practitioners. Results : This review discussed allergic rhinitis's epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis. We found many standardized clinical practice guideline have been published in this field. And some guideline reflected accumulation of medical evidence on interventions in Korean medicine. It suggested that acupuncture, herbal medicine, herbal patch are useful to prevention and alleviate allergic symptoms. But some interventions have heterogeneity due to each nation's medical background. Conclusions : Acupuncture therapy is now recommended world widely for treating allergic rhinitis. But other interventions of Korean medicine are not well recognized in the same manner. We need more research to identify mechanism and rigorous clinical trials to clarify efficacy and safety of Korean medicine intervention.
