Objective: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of daily feed intake during the laying period on embryonic myogenic differentiation 1 (MYOD1), myogenic factor 5 (MYF5), and myogenic factor 6 (MYF6) gene expression in genetically fat and lean lines of chickens. Methods: An experiment in a 2×2 factorial design was conducted with two dietary intake levels (100% and 75% of nutrition recommendation) and two broiler chicken lines (fat and lean). Two lines of hens (n = 384 for each line) at 23th week of age were randomly divided into 4 treatments with 12 replicates of 16 birds. The experiment started at 27th week of age (5% egg rate) and ended at 54th week of age. Hatched eggs from the medium laying period were collected. Real time polymerase chain reaction analysis was used to analyse the MYOD1, MYF5, and MYF6 mRNA levels of E7, E9, E11, E13, and E15 body tissues and E17, E19, and E21 chest and thigh muscle samples. Results: The results indicated that there were significant effects of line, dietary intake, and interactions between them on MYOD1, MYF5, and MYF6 gene mRNA expression levels in embryonic tissues. Low daily feed intake did not change the expression trend of MYOD1 mRNA in either line, but changed the peak values, especially in lean line. Low daily feed intake altered the trend in MYF5 mRNA expression level in both lines and apparently delayed its onset. There was no apparent effect of low daily feed intake on the trends of MYF6 mRNA expression levels in either line, but it significantly changed the values on many embryonic days. Conclusion: Maternal nutrient restriction affects myogenesis and is manifested in the expression of embryonic MYOD1, MYF5, and MYF6 genes. Long term selection for fat deposition in broiler chickens changes the pattern and intensity of myogenesis.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of the level of stocking density of housing with or without window on chicken meat quality. The incidence of $1^+$ grade of whole chicken housed with window significantly influenced by stocking density. The incidence of $1^+$ grade chicken at high stocking density ($0.050\;m^2$/head), standard stocking density ($0.066\;m^2$/head), and low stocking density ($0.083\;m^2$/head) was 26, 52, and 66%, respectively. Breast muscle of chicken housed with window and with low stocking density showed higher incidence of $1^+$ grade than high stocking density. Also minor and severe PSE (pale, soft, extractive) incidence of chicken meat were showed 4% each, while the $1^+$ grade chicken was not appeared at low density. In chicken thigh, the incidence rate was not affected by stocking density. In chicken housed without window, the incidence of $1^+$ grade chicken in high, standard, and low stocking density was 18, 8, and 46%, respectively. Also, the incidence of $1^+$ grade chicken breast was 2.6 times higher than the chicken in low stocking density. However, incidence of $1^+$ grade thigh was not affected by the stocking density. These results suggest that high stocking density significantly reduced the incidence of $1^+$ grade chicken meat regardless of housing with or without window.
In this experiment, 5 treatments consisted of control, probiotics (0.2%; T1), illite (1.0%; T2), activated carbon (1.0%; T3), and hardwood vinegar (1.0%; T4) as diets of chicken were evaluated for 35 days through feeding of 200 male chickens (Arbor Acre Broiler). Thigh muscle from slaughtered chickens were analyzed on pH, volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), shear force, and meat color during 10 d of cold storage at $4{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Groups of T3 and T4 showed higher pH levels compared to the control group, and T4 showed significantly higher value. Over the storage period, all treatment groups showed increase in pH (p<0.05). Values of VBN of T1, T3, and T4 were lower than those of the control group and T2 up to 7 d of storage (p<0.05), but there was no significance at 10 d of storage. Values of TBARS of T3 and T4 were lower than the control group, T1, and T2, while all treated groups showed rapid increase of TBARS values over storage period (p<0.05). Shear force did not show significant difference among treated groups, but it was decreased over storage. Lightness of meat color (L) in treated groups was higher than the control, and T4 showed the highest value during entire storage period (p<0.05). Yellowness levels (b) of T3 and T4 were higher than the control group. These results may suggest the improvement of chicken meat quality and shelf life via the addition 1% activated carbon and 1% hardwood vinegar into feed.
A component of pine bark extract, pitamin, is known as an antioxidant and antimicrobial agent that exerts a variety of physiological effects; this compound has also been used widely in human beings. A 35-day trial was conducted to determine the influence of dietary pitamin premix via a sensory evaluation and evaluations of the TBARS, and meat quality in broiler chicken. We used 4 treatments groups: Control, Antibiotics, Pitamin premix 0.1%, and Pitamin premix 0.2%. The amino acid and protein contents in chicken breast muscle did not differ among the treatment groups. The pH of broilers fed on diets containing pitamin premix was lower (p<0.05) than broilers fed on the control and antibiotics diets, whereas the WHC was significantly higher in chicken breast muscles fed on the diet containing pitamin premix compared to the control and antibiotics groups (p<0.05). The TBARS is intended to be increased during the storage period (in days), and was significantly lower (p<0.05) in the chicken thigh muscles with skin from broilers fed on the diet containing the pitamin premix as compared to the control and antibiotics group (p<0.05). The sensory evaluation of boiled chicken, with the exception of the antibiotics group, revealed significantly better results from chickens fed on diets containing pitamin premix than the control group (p<0.05). These results suggest that dietary pitamin premix may improve the shelf life, flavor, taste, and meat quality in broiler chicken.
The present study furthered this research by determining the optimal level of inuloprebiotics derived from Korean Jerusalem artichoke to promote growth in broiler chickens. On hatch day, 320 male Ross 308 broilers were randomly allotted to four groups for a 35-day feeding regimen. The groups were a control (no supplementation), diet supplementation with antibiotics (8 ppm avilamycin), supplementation with 200 ppm inuloprebiotics, and supplementation with 250 ppm inuloprebiotics. Body weight and feed intake were comparably high in the two inuloprebiotics groups, and exceeded the values for the control and antibiotics groups. Body weight and feed intake was higher in chickens fed the antibiotics supplemented diet, compared to controls. There were significant differences among treatment groups. Feed conversion ratio during total experimental periods was significantly high in the control group compared to the inuloprebiotics-fed groups, but no significant difference was evident using antibiotics or inuloprebiotics dietary supplementation. Carcass weight, dressing percentage, and weight of breast and thigh muscle were significantly higher for inuloprebiotics-fed chickens, compared with control and antibiotic-fed chickens. Inuloprebiotics concentration was not significant, while antibiotics-fed chickens displayed significantly higher values than control chickens. Abdominal fat was significantly reduced (19.08%-23.30%) and blood immunoglobulin and the weight of the thymus and Bursa of Fabricius were significantly increased in chickens receiving inuloprebiotics-supplemented feed, compared to control and antibiotics fed groups. In the lower intestine, the viable counts of beneficial bacteria (Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus) were significantly increased and counts of harmful bacteria (Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp.) were significantly decreased in the presence of the inuloprebiotics, compared to control and antibiotic. The present results support 200 ppm as an optimal level of Korean Jerusalem artichoke-derived inuloprebiotics as a dietary supplement to improve growth in broiler chickens.

Cellulose has been widely applied into various medical fields including scaffolding, tissue engineering and tissue formation. In this study, we manufactured cellulose medical fiber from Styela clava tunics(SCT-CS) and analyzed the tensile strength, elongation at break, fluid uptake and surface morphology. And then, the biocompatibility and toxicity of SCT-CS were measured in Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats after the implantation for 30, 60 and 90 days. The level of tensile strength and fluid uptake were lower in SCT-CS than chromic catgut(CCG), while elongation at break level were maintained the higher in SCT-CS. Also, the roughness with pronounced surface patterns as a result of in vivo degradation was significantly greater in CCG than this of SCT-CS although these levels gradually appeared with time in both groups. After implantation for 90 days, SCT-CS and CCG was successfully implanted around muscle of thigh without any significant immune response. Furthermore, no significant alterations were measured in serum parameters and the specific pathological features induced by most toxic compounds for liver and kidney toxicity. Therefore, these results suggest that SCT-CS showing good biocompatibility and non-toxicity can be successfully prepared from cellulose powder of SCT as well as has the potential for use as a powerful biomaterial for medical sutures.

A 35-day trial was carried out to determine the influence of dietary cinnamon powder (CNP) on the sensory evaluation and quality of chicken meat, carcass characteristics, plasma lipid level and growth performance of broiler chickens. There were 5 treatment groups: control; CNP 2.0%; CNP 3.0%; CNP 4.0%; and CNP 5.0%. The body weight of the broilers fed the diets containing 3.0% CNP was higher than the broilers fed the control feeds (p<0.05). The concentration of triacylglyceride, HDL-C was higher in the plasma from broiler chickens fed diets with CNP (p<0.05) but the concentrations of total cholesterol and LDL-C were significantly lower (p<0.05) compared to the control group. The carcass percentage, chicken breast and thigh weight were not different between the CNP and control groups. The WHC was significantly higher in the chickens fed 4% CNP diet, while the TBARS was significantly lower (p<0.05) in the chickens fed 3% CNP diet compared to the control group. The color of the breast muscle from the chickens fed 3% CNP diet was lighter than those from the control groups (p<0.05). The sensory evaluation of the taste and savor related to CNP in fried or boiled chicken meat were significantly better from the broiler chicken fed diets containing CNP than the control group (p<0.05). These results suggest that dietary cinnamon powder may improve savor and quality of chicken meat in broiler chickens.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS) is Motor Neuron Disease(MND) that reveals muscle relaxation, bulbar palsy, extremities weakness, Pneumonia, in severe case, leads to death. Objectives : Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is one of the incurable disease. In Oriental medicine, Wei symptom is similar as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, so we diagnosed it as Wei symptom and treated in Oriental medical system. Methods : The patient was treated by acupunture, moxibustion, herb medication, physical treatment. The improvement of the patient was judged by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS), Grasping power on right arm, circumference of thigh and calf. Result : The patient had better condition for a while but the sputum irritated breathing and the day before he discharged vital sign was not stable and could not breath well. Conclusion : It is necessary to have more examination about the incurable syndromes such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, and keep the patient's life better and expand their lives.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is a syndrome characterized by persistent, burning pain, hyperpathia, allodynia & hyperaesthesia in an extremity, with concurrent evidence of autonomic nervous system dysfunction. It generally develops after nerve injury, trauma, surgery, et al. The most successful therapies are directed towards blocking the sympathetic intervention to the affected extremity by regional sympathetic ganglion block or Bier block with sympathetic blocker; other traditional treatments include transcutaneous electrical stimulation, immobilization with cast & splint, physical therapy, psychotherapy, administration of sympathetic blocker, calcitonin, corticosteroid and analgesic agents. The purpose of this report is to evaluate and describe the effects of magnetic resonance following unsatisfactory results with traditional treatments of RSD. A 17 year old female patient, 1 year earlier, had received excision and drainage of pus at the right femoral triangle due to an injury caused by a stone. Afterwards, she experienced burning pain, knee joint stiffness, and muscle dystrophy of the right thigh, especially when standing and walking. Despite a year of number of traditional treatments such as: lumbar sympathetic block, continuous epidural analgesia, transcutaneous electrical stimulation, & administration of predisolone, her pain did not improve. Surprisingly, the patients was able to walk free from pain and difficulty after just one application of magnetic resonance. The patient has been successfully treated with further treatment of two to three times a week for approximately ten weeks. More recently, magnetic resonance has been demonstrated to produce effective results for the relief of pain in a variety of diseases. From our experiences we recognize magnetic resonance as a therapeutic modality which can provide excellent results for the treatment of RSD. It has been suggested that polysynaptic reflex which are disturbed in RSD may be modulated normally on the spinal cord level through the application of magnetic resonance.
