Welding deformation analysis based on improved equivalent strain method considering the effect of temperature gradients

  • In the present study, the existing equivalent stain method is improved to make up for its weaknesses. The improved inherent strain model is built considering more sophisticated three dimensional constraints which are embodied by six cubic elements attached on three sides of a core cubic element. From a few case studies, it is found that the inherent strain is mainly affected by the changes in restraints induced by changes of temperature-dependent material properties of the restraining elements. On the other hand, the degree of restraints is identified to be little influential to the inherent strain. Thus, the effect of temperature gradients over plate thickness and plate transverse direction normal to welding is reflected in the calculation of the inherent strain chart. The welding deformation can be calculated by an elastic FE analysis using the inherent strain values taken from the inherent strain chart.

  • We demonstrated the viability of fully microfabricating SWCNT(single-wall carbon nanotube) film strain sensors for force and weight sensing. Our spray-deposited SWCNT film strain sensors showed good linearity over a range from 0 to 400 microstrain, and much higher sensitivity compared to commercial metal foil-type gauges. The number of grids and the thickness of the SWCNT film were found to have a significant effect on the strain sensing properties of the SWCNT film gauges. A strain sensing methode for the CNT-based strain gauges was also investigated using a binocular type beam load cells. Preliminary results indicate that the microfabrication method shown here is promising for developing a commercial strain gauge using a spray-coated SWCNT thin film. In the near future, various studies will be performed to further enhance the properties of the spray-coated SWCNT film strain sensors.

Correlation Analysis Between Physical Properties of Linerboard and Score Crack (괘선터짐과 라이너지 물성간의 상관성 분석)

  • Cracking of scored or creased lines on boards is a serious problem in converting process of corrugated fiberboard. It is important to reduce the possibility of score crack in advance by controlling the related quality factors of linerboard. To find out the key properties affecting score crack, we carried out the correlation analysis between score crack and physical properties of linerboards. Score crack was evaluated by visual rating on surface crack after folding a linerboard using laboratory folding resistance tester. Thickness of linerboard was the most important factor to score crack. The critical limits of thickness and strain can be determined by correlation analysis for reducing the possibility of score crack.

A Study on the Warm Beep Drawabilities of Galvannealed Steel Sheet (합금화 용융 아연 도금강판의 온간 디프드로잉 성형성에 관한 연구)

  • The limiting drawing ratio (LDR) under uniform heating of blanks was measured at the various temperature ranges between 25 and $250^{\circ}C$ by using two different blank shapes, square and circular blanks, and six different blank sizes with the drawing ratios(DR) of 2.4 to 2.9. The galvannealed steel sheet (SCP3CM 60/60) of 0.7mm thickness was used. The LDR at warm forming condition reached 1.2 times of that at room temperature, and the maximum drawing depth reached 1.9 times. The higher temperature was adopted, the more stable and uniform thickness strain distribution was observed.

  • The effect of lubrication on the development of textures and Microstructure was studied by different lubricating condition during hot rolling of AA1050 aluminum alloy. Hot rolling without lubrication led to the evolution of the pronounced through-thickness texture gradients, whereas hot rolling with lubrication gave rise to the formation of uniform rolling texture in the whole thickness layer. The variation of texture and microstructure according to hot rolling condition are investigated by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD). The experimental results were discussed base on the finite element method (FEM) simulation. FEM calculation reveals that a larger friction between roll and sheet causes the deviated strain state from a plane strain leading to the formation of shear textures in the thickness layers close to the surface.

  • The present study intends to analyze damage in thin-walled steel cylinders undergoing constant internal pressure and thermal cycles through use of anisotropic continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model coupled with nonlinear kinematic hardening rule of Chaboche. Materials damage in each direction was defined based on plastic strain and its direction. Stress and strain distribution over wall-thickness was described based on the CDM model and the return mapping algorithm was employed based on the consistency condition. Plastic zone expansion across the wall thickness of cylinders was noticeably affected with change in internal pressure and temperature gradients. Expansion of plastic zone over wall-thickness at inner and outer surfaces and their boundaries demarking elastic and plastic regions was attributed to the magnitude of damage induced over thermomechanical cycles on the thin-walled samples tested at various pressure stresses.

  • A prototype probabilistic approach to thickness design for asphalt pavement surface course was developed using first-order second moment probability model. The tensile strain (load effect) developing at the bottom of surface layer due to the wheel load and the critical strain (resistance) of asphalt concrete were used as random variables for pavement reliability analysis. Based on the parameters for load effect and resistance data collected from reference and field, simulated data were generated by Monte Carlo method for reliability evaluation of the pavement for a typical rural highway. Thickness of pavement surface course was defined in terms of target reliability of the pavement, growth factor of traffic, design life of pavement and resistance of the asphalt concrete to be placed on the pavement. According to these rationales, prototype thickness design chrats were sugested through example studies. From these, similar design charts can be developed for many pavements if appropriate data and target reliability are determined.

Determination of the Layer Thickness for Long-Life Asphalt Pavement (장수명 아스팔트포장 단면설계에 관한 연구)

  • This study is a part of research for developing the technologies of long life pavements having more than 40-year design life. The objective of this study is to develop the simplified design procedure for determining the layer thickness and modulus of the long life pavement. A synthetic database was established using the finite element program of a pavement structure with various combinations of layer thickness and modulus. The synthetic database includes the structural and material information, surface deflection, and critical pavement responses. Using the developed synthetic database, this paper suggests the minimum layer thickness and modulus for long life pavements bared on the limited strain level concept. Results demonstrate that the pavement greater than 410mm of total AC layer thickness is considered as the long life pavements regardless of the material characteristics and thickness in each layer. To become a long life pavement, a total thickness of AC layer should be greater than 250mm. The design procedure for determining the layer thickness and modulus of the pavements with AC layer thickness ranging from 250 to 410mm is also presented in this paper.

  • This paper presents characteristics of CrN thin-film strain gauges, which were deposited on glass by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere(Ar-$(5{\sim}25%)N_2$). The physical and electrical characteristics of these films investigated with the thickness range $3500{\AA}$ of CrN thin films, annealing temperature $(100{\sim}300^{\circ}C)$ and annealing $(24{\sim}72hr)$. The optimized condition of CrN thin-film strain gauges were thickness range of $3500{\AA}$ and annealing condition($300^{\circ}C$, 48 hr) in Ar-10 %$N_2$ deposition atmosphere. Under optimum conditions, the CrN thin-films for strain gauge is obtained a high resistivity, ${\rho}=1147.65{\mu}{\Omega}cm$, a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR=$-186ppm/^{\circ}C$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal, 11.17. And change in resistance after annealing for the CrN thin-films were quitely linear and stable.
