As the springback of sheet metal during unloading nay cause deviation from a desired shape, accurate prediction of springback is essential for the design of sheet stamping operations. On the removal of the applied load the specimen loses its elastic strain by contracting around the contour of the block, the radius $\rho$ can be determined by the residual differential strain. Therefore in this study the springback estimated by the residual differential strain is experimentally validated through the comparison with those obtained by U-bending test. The springback characteristics of two analytical models are also estimated at various processing conditions such as thickness, curvature of radius and drawing strain. The model based on residual differential strain has an applied transition strain where the springback undergoes a dramatic decrease. Both models show that springback decreases with increased strip thickness and with decreased radius of curvature. For no applied tension, the model based on residual differential strain predicts more springback as compared to the moment based model.
The present paper is concerned with a delamination analysis of a multilayered frame structure that exhibits non-linear creep behavior. A solution to the strain energy release rate is obtained by considering the time-dependent complementary strain energy in the frame. The mechanical behavior of the frame is treated by using a non-linear stress-strain-time relationship. The time-dependent solution to the strain energy release rate obtained in the present paper holds for a multilayered frame made of arbitrary number of adhesively bonded layers of different thicknesses and material properties. Besides, the dealamination is located arbitrary along the thickness. The solution to the strain energy release rate is verifiedby applying the J-integral approach. A parametric study of the strain energy release rate is carried-out. Two three-layered frame configurations are analyzed in order to evaluate the influence of the delamination crack location along the thickness on the strain energy release rate. The strain energy release is analyzed also for the case when a notch is cut-out in the inner delamination crack arm. The results obtained are compared with these for a frame without a notch.

Deformation characteristics of miniature plate tensile specimens have been studied to develop the thickness requirement and a correlation to estimate the mechanical properties of bulk material from miniature specimen data. The material used was a SA 508 C1.3 reactor pressure vessel steel and the thicknesses of miniature tensile specimens varied from ().12 m to 2 mm. The effects of thickness on the tensile deformation properties such as strength, ductility, and necking characteristics were analyzed. The yield and ultimate tensile strengths were independent of specimen thickness when the thickness was larger than about 0.2 mm. The uniform and total elongations decreased as the specimen thickness decreased. It was also observed that the uniform strain component in the width direction decreased with decrease in the specimen thickness, however, that in the thickness direction was rather constant in total thickness range studied. Based on this observation and a relationship between the necking angle and the ratio between strain components, a correlation between the uniform elongations of miniature specimen and standard specimen was derived. The uniform elongations calculated by this new correlation agreed well with the measured values.

Consolidation of dredged fill has become important task for site treatment. The variation of stratum thickness during consolidation processing needs to be taken into consideration since hydraulic fill would go through a much larger scale strain than land soil when it is subject to a load. In this study, the consolidation period considering the variation of stratum thickness was analyzed and compared the results with those of existing consolidation studies which did not consider the variation of stratum thickness. According to the results of the study, the consolidation period of the ground with a larger strain was calculated more close to observed value in case of Mikasa theory which takes the variation of stratum thickness into consideration.
Au/PDMS membranes are widely used to fabricate strain sensors which can detect input signals. An interfacial adhesion between metal films and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates is one of the important factors determining the performance of strain sensors, in terms of robustness, reliability, and sensitivity. Here, we fabricate Au/PDMS membranes with (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) treatment. PDMS membranes were fabricated by spin-coating and the thickness was controlled by varying the spin rates. Au electrodes were deposited on the PDMS membrane by metal sputtering and the thickness was controlled by varying sputtering time. Owing to the MPTMS treatment, the interfacial adhesion between the Au electrode and the PDMS membrane was strengthened and the membrane was highly transparent. The Au electrode, fabricated with a sputtering time of 50 s, had the highest gauge factor at a maximum strain of ~0.7%, and the Au electrode fabricated with a sputtering time of 60 s had the maximum strain range among sputtering times of 50, 60, and 120 s. Our technique of using Au/PDMS with MPTMS treatment could be applied to the fabrication of strain sensors.
In this paper, fracture analysis of a continuously inhomogeneous arch structure with two longitudinal cracks is developed in terms of the time-dependent strain energy release rate. The arch under consideration exhibits non-linear creep behavior. The cross-section of the arch is a rectangle. The material is continuously inhomogeneous along the thickness of the cross-section. The arch is loaded by two bending moments applied at its end sections. The mechanical behavior of the material is described by using a non-linear stress-strain-time relationship. The two longitudinal cracks are located symmetrically with respect to the mid-span of the arch. Due to the symmetry, only half of the arch is considered. Time-dependent solutions to strain energy release rate are obtained by analyzing the balance of the energy. For verification, time-dependent solutions to the strain energy release rate are derived also by considering the time-dependent complementary strain energy. The evolution of the strain energy release rate with the time is analyzed. The effects of material inhomogeneity, locations of the two cracks along the thickness of the arch and the magnitude of the external loading on the time-dependent strain energy release rate are evaluated.

Fatigue crack growth retardation of 304 L stainless steel is studied using a neutron diffraction method. Three orthogonal strain components(crack growth, crack opening, and through-thickness direction) are measured in the vicinity of the crack tip along the crack propagation direction. The residual strain profiles (1) at the mid-thickness and (2) at the 1.5 mm away from the mid-thickness of the compact tension(CT) specimen are compared. Residual lattice strains at the 1.5 mm location are slightly higher than at the mid-thickness. The CT specimen is deformed in situ under applied loads, thereby providing evolution of the internal stress fields around the crack tip. A tensile overload results in an increased magnitude of the compressive residual stress field. In the crack growth retardation, it is found that the stresses are dispersed in the crack-wake region, where the highest compressive residual stresses are measured. Our neutron diffraction mapping results reveal that the dominant mechanism is by interrupting the transfer of stress concentration at the crack tip.
An equivalent single layer trigonometric shear deformation theory taking into account transverse shear deformation effect as well as transverse normal strain effect is presented for static flexure of cross-ply laminated composite and sandwich plates. The inplane displacement field uses sinusoidal function in terms of thickness coordinate to include the transverse shear deformation effect. The cosine function in thickness coordinate is used in transverse displacement to include the effect of transverse normal strain. The kinematics of the present theory is much richer than those of the other higher order shear deformation theories, because if the trigonometric term (involving thickness coordinate z) is expanded in power series, the kinematics of higher order theories (which are usually obtained by power series in thickness coordinate z) are implicitly taken into account to good deal of extent. Governing equations and boundary conditions of the theory are obtained using the principle of virtual work. The closed-form solutions of simply supported cross-ply laminated composite and sandwich plates have been obtained. The results of present theory are compared with those of the classical plate theory (CPT), first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) of Reddy and exact three dimensional elasticity theory wherever applicable. The results predicted by present theory are in good agreement with those of higher order shear deformation theory and the elasticity theory.
This paper investigates creep analysis of a plate made of Al-SiC functionally graded material using Mendelson's method of successive elastic solution. All mechanical and thermal material properties, except Poisson's ratio, are assumed to be variable along the thickness direction based on the volume fraction of reinforcement and thickness. First, the basic relations of the plate are derived using the Love-Kirchhoff plate theory. The solution of governing equations yields an elastic solution to start creep analysis. The creep behavior is demonstrated through Norton's equation based on Pandey's experimental results extracted for Al-SiC functionally graded material. A linear variation is assumed for temperature distribution along the thickness direction. The creep strain, as well as the thermal strain, are included in the governing equations derived from classical plate theory for mechanical strain. A successive elastic solution based on Mendelson's method is employed to derive the history of stresses, strains, and displacements over a long time. History of stresses and deformations are obtained over a long time to predict damage to the plate because of various loadings, and material composition along the thickness and planar directions.

In case of evaluating the bond stress of a void deck plate using a wire steel, there is no standard formula considering both the influence on the void and the type of the reinforcing bar. Therefore we proposed a model equation considered the bond characteristics of the void deck plate. A total of 46 specimens was carried out a direct pull-out test and the test variables were the presence of a void body, type of reinforcing bar, the inner cover thickness according to the location of reinforcing bars and bond region. As a result of the comparison between the steel bar and steel wire, the bond stress of the steel wire with the relative rib area of 0.071 is 4.5 ~ 28.58% lower than that of the steel bar with 0.092 and the bond stress reduction rate increases when the inner cover thickness is insufficient. In the case of the inner cover thickness of $1.7d_b$ and $2.7d_b$, the bond stress was reduced to 48.7 ~ 68.4%. In the inner cover thickness was $4.9d_b$ and $5.2d_b$, the bond stresses were equivalent to those of the solid specimens. It was confirmed that the average bond stress and strain were affected by the inner cover thickness. Therefore the predicted model for one module of the void deck plate is proposed and verified by considering the bond characteristics of the void deck plate.
