페놀수지로 몰딩된 바이메탈식 서모스탯의 발화위험성 (The Hazard of Ignition on the Bimetal Type Thermostat Molded by Phenol Resin)

  • 페놀수지로 몰딩된 바이메탈식 서모스탯의 반복적인 동작에 의한 발화위험성을 검토하기 위하여 발화된 것으로 판정된 사례의 연구와 동작 횟수를 가속시킨 실험을 행하였다. 사례연구 및 실험결과, 페놀수지로 몰딩된 바이메탈식 서모스탯(이하 '바이메탈식 서모스탯'이라 칭함)은 반복적인 동작에 의하여 내측의 고정접점과 가동접점 부분 사이에서 몰딩재료인 페놀수지가 국부적으로 탄화되는 트래킹 현상이 발생되며, 이로 인한 전기적인 발열 및 용융 등에 의하여 내측으로부터 발화될 수 있다는 사실을 입증하였다.

Smart Thermostat based on Machine Learning and Rule Engine

  • In this paper, we propose a smart thermostat temperature set-point control method based on machine learning and rule engine, which controls thermostat's temperature set-point so that it can achieve energy savings as much as possible without sacrifice of occupants' comfort while users' preference usage pattern is respected. First, the proposed method periodically mines data about how user likes for heating (winter)/cooling (summer) his or her home by learning his or her usage pattern of setting temperature set-point of the thermostat during the past several weeks. Then, from this learning, the proposed method establishes a weekly schedule about temperature setting. Next, by referring to thermal comfort chart by ASHRAE, it makes rules about how to adjust temperature set-points as much as low (winter) or high (summer) while the newly adjusted temperature set-point satisfies thermal comfort zone for predicted humidity. In order to make rules work on time or events, we adopt rule engine so that it can achieve energy savings properly without sacrifice of occupants' comfort. Through experiments, it is shown that the proposed smart thermostat temperature set-point control method can achieve better energy savings while keeping human comfort compared to other conventional thermostat.

  • Thermal control of satellite propellant tank is achieved by patch heaters enabled by thermostat's behavior. It is important to attach the thermostat on the appropriate position of the propellant tank. However its position cannot be given with exact numerics because tank is spherical. Actually the position for thermostat is designated in relevant drawing approximately, therby, the engineer practices depending on his own experience and intuition. The sensitivity analysis for the position of thermostat is performed such that the influence on the thermal behavior and control of tank is examined quantatively. When assembling tank module, the reasonable performance on the thermal control is believed with possible human errors if the uncertainty in the position of thermostat is not quite large.

  • 자동차 엔진용 thermostat에서 냉각수 온도제어를 위해 사용되는 wax의 제조 및 성분 분석을 실시하였다. 제조된 시료에 대해 lift 실험을 실시해 본 결과, 용제 추출법에 의해 제조된 시료가 자동차 엔진용 thermostat으로 사용 가능한 범위내에 있게 됨을 볼 수 있었다. 또한, 원유의 pitch를 용제 추출한 후 감압 증류 및 산처리를 하면 보다 정밀한 wax를 제조 할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다.

  • High-efficient HEV Engine cooling systems reflects variable coolant temperature because it can decrease the hydrodynamic frictional losses of lubricated engine parts in light duty conditions. In order to safely raise the operating temperature of passenger cars to a constant higher level, and thus optimize combustion and all accompanying factors, a new thermostat technology was developed : the electronically map-controlled thermostat. In this work, various crystalline plastics such as polyphthalamide (PPA) and polyphenylenesulfide (PPS) mixed with various glass fiber amounts were introduced into plastic fittings of automotive electronic controlled thermostat for the purpose of suppressing influx of coolant into the element and undesirable opening during hot soaking. Skirt was installed around element frame of automotive electronic controlled thermostat for improving thermal sensitivity in terms of response time, hysteresis and melting temperature. To validate the effectiveness and optimum shape of skirt, thermal sensitivity test and three-dimensional CFD simulation have been performed. As a consequence, important improvement in thermal sensitivity with less than 3℃ of maximum coolant temperature between opening and engine inlet was obtained.

CONTROL STRATEGY OF ELECTRIC COOLANT PUMPS FOR FUEL ECONOMY IMPROVEMENT

  • The engine cooling system for a medium duty V6, 4.5 L diesel engine was modeled with a commercial code, GT-Cool in order to investigate the effect of controllable electric pump on the cooling performance and the fuel economy. The simulation results of the cooling system model with mechanical coolant pump were validated with experimental data. Two different types of electric pumps were implemented into the cooling system model and PID control for electric pump operation was incorporated into the simulation study. Based on the simulation result with electric pump, conventional thermostat hysteresis was modified to reduce pump operation for additional improvement of fuel economy, and then the benefit of electric pumps with modified thermostat hysteresis on fuel economy was demonstrated with the simulation. The predicted result indicates that the cooling system with electric pump and modified thermostat hysteresis can reduce pump power consumption by more than $99\%$ during the FTP 74 driving cycle.

  • In the previous development of the recursive thermostat chained fully flexible cell molecular dynamics simulation, implicit time integration method such as generalized leapfrog integration is used. The implicit algorithm is very much complicated and not easy to show time reversibility because it is solved by the nonlinear iterative procedure. Thus we develop simple, explicit symplectic time integration formula for the recursive thermostat chained fully flexible unit cell simulation. Uniaxial tension test is performed to verify the present explicit algorithm. We check that the present simulation satisfies the ergodic hypothesis for various values of fictitious mass and coefficient of multiple thermostat system. The proposed method should be helpful to predict mechanical and thermal behavior of nano-scale structure.

  • Recently, the internal combustion engines have focused on reducing both the CO2 emissions in order to cope with severe regulations for greenhouse effect. Therefore, various new technologies have been developed in many countries. Among them, the cooling system is spotlighted because it has great effect on fuel efficiency. However, the present engine cooling system is almost same as one of the 50 years ago. The needs for high performance and compact size make it important to improve engine cooling system, down-sizing and control method of coolant flow. Thus, low fuel consumption technology such as control and synthetic management of cooling system was necessary to satisfy with these needs. In this study, we applied electric thermostat to improve the fuel economy. The fuel consumption was compared after driving FTP-75 mode on both conditions which were with a conventional wax thermostat and with a electric thermostat. The coolant temperature of opening the electric thermostat is higher.

  • It is widely recognized that exhaust emissions, fuel economy and engine torque are affected by engine temperature, and logic would suggest that a cooling system offering a better compromise of engine temperature would improve both overall engine performance and economy. Author measured coolant temperature of some parts and flow rate which are necessary to heat transfer in a engine. And Author determined parameters necessary for the optimum design of a thermostat to keep the best engine performance ; determined the optimum operating temperature of electric cooling fan. A summary of this study is followed. 1. Study of the effects of cooling condition to combustion character in a engine. 2. Analyze of heat transfer surrounding engine cylinders. 3. Study of the effects of cooling character to engine heat rejection, determination of the optimum collant temperature for keeping the optimum engine performance and determination of the optimum design of a thermostat for keeping that temperature.

TGDI엔진용 전자식 수온조절기의 감온성능 향상을 위한 그래핀 소재의 적용 (Application of Graphene Platelets on Electronic Controlled Thermostat of TGDI Engine for Improving Thermal Sensitivity)

  • In this work, graphene platelets were introduced into wax in an automotive electronic controlled thermostat for the purpose of enhancing its thermal-conductive property and improving response performance. Graphene content ranging from 10 % to 20% was added into and mixed with the wax to investigate the effect of graphene amounts on the performance of an automotive electronic controlled thermostat in terms of response time, hysteresis and melting temperature. The experimental results revealed that graphene in wax contributed to a reduction in the response time and hysteresis of an automotive electronic controlled thermostat. As a consequence, important improvement in thermal sensitivity, full lift, melting temperature and hysteresis were obtained. The thermal response of wax with graphene content of 20 % was improved by 25 %, as compared to that of wax with Cu content of 20 %. Hysteresis of wax with graphene was reduced by $0.6^{\circ}C$ as compared to that of wax with Cu content. The melting temperature of wax is lowered and hysteresis is also improved with increased graphene content of wax in an electronic controlled thermostat. We hope that this study can help further the transition of nano-fluid technology from small-scale research laboratories to industrial application in the automotive sector.
