Synthesis and Applications of Spherical Active Carbon Materials (구형 활성탄소의 합성 및 응용)

  • Spherical active carbon materials have been used for the removal of pollutants in the area of food processing, water treatment, air purification, oral administration. Moreover, they are now expected to make an epoch in the areas of electronics, life science, environmental technology, and so on due to their superior physical properties. Carbon particles should be requested for the edgeless spherical shapes in order to minimize the loss due to the abrasion during the process and/or practical use, but the carbon particles manufactured from petroleum-based pitch do not meet these needs. Nowadays, thus, the spherical active carbon particles carbonized from various spherical polymer beads are studied with thermoplastic and/or thermosetting polymers. In this paper, the synthesis of spherical phenolic beads and furan beads, which are thermosetting polymers, and their carbonization techniques are examined.

  • Poly(butylene terephthalate)(P5T) has long history as an engineering thermoplastic. PBT was first introduced commercially to the market place as an injection molding resin about 1969 by Celanese Plastics in the U.S.A. It is still widely used as a molding resin. Processing or forming methods for solid-phase deformation, such as stretching, hydrostatic extrusion. roller stretching, rolling, and so on can improve the mechanical properties effectively.   • Purpose: Prosthodontics for edentulous patients is a treatment technique using implant, which has impactful results in retention and support effects. Methods: As a retention technique, SCRP (screw and cement retained implant prosthesis) has reported in many studies as a beneficial method for both patients and curers, which can reduce errors in process of making abutment and top implant. Results: Prosthesis manufacturing, as polymerization method of hardened resin teeth with thermoplastic resin, is helpful for patients with aesthetic and financial situations regarding residual ridge and interocclusal relationship, also indicates reliable results in both retention and care. Conclusion: Using SCRP technique, we notably obtained a clinical and aesthetic outcome from five implants in anterior tooth, which are half fixable and detachable implants on screw of implant abutment by the technicians at anytime.

Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of Three-dimensional Printed Flexible Denture Resin according to Post-polymerization Conditions: A Pilot Study

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether three-dimensional (3D)-printed flexible denture resin has suitable mechanical properties for use as a thermoplastic denture base resin material. Materials and Methods: A total of 96 specimens were prepared using the 3D printed flexible denture resin (Flexible Denture). Specimens were designed in CAD software (Tinkercad) and printed through a digital light-processing 3D printer (Asiga MAX UV). Post-polymerization process was conducted according to air exposure or glycerin immersion at 35℃ or 60℃ and for 30 or 60 minutes. The maximum flexural strength, elastic modulus, 0.2% offset yield strength, and Vickers hardness of 3D-printed flexible denture resin were assessed. Result: The maximum flexural strength ranged from 64.46±2.03 to 84.25±4.32 MPa, the 0.2% offset yield strength ranged from 35.28±1.05 to 46.13±2.33 MPa, the elastic modulus ranged from 1,764.70±64.66 to 2,179.16±140.01 MPa, and the Vickers hardness ranged from 7.01±0.40 to 11.45±0.69 kg/mm2. Conclusion: Within the limits of the present study, the maximum flexural strength, 0.2% offset yield strength, elastic modulus, and Vickers hardness are sufficient for clinical use under the post-polymerization conditions of 60℃ at 60 minutes with or without glycerin precipitation.

  • Today's consumers are looking for emotional design which can fulfill their own potential desire. Emotion varies according to individual circumstance, age, sex, culture, education, profession and so on. Automotive instrument panel design is the most important part of interior design, because it affects the impression of interior design and has the equipments for safety, entertainment and various information. Thus, this study was performed to apply emotional design to automotive instrument panel which is the most important part of automotive interior, and find the best bonding conditions to build instrument panel efficiently by comparing mechanical properties in thermoplastic resin of polyethylene (PE) adhesion. Satisfactory adhesion was executed in ultrasonic welding for the same materials of PE. The best welding conditions were found to be welding time of I second, welding pressure of 250 kPA for PE-PE welding. Dissimilar materials were adhered when adhesion and ultrasonic welding were performed at the same time.

  • Recently, CFRP composites are widely used as lightweight materials have with excellent mechanical properties and can beare widely used in various fields. In general, thermosetting resins are used for CFRP. However, in recent years, studies have been carried out using thermoplastic resins have been actively carried out to overcome the disadvantages of thermosetting resins. The LFT-D system is a molding method in which a fiber is directly cut to a the desired length while being impregnated with a thermoplastic resin to produce a compound and that is then press-molding molded to form the product. In this paper, before the production of the trailing arm, the compression molding analysis was carried out in order to grasp the problems that may occur during production. Through cCompression molding analysis was applied to calculate of the minimum press pressure and to compare and analysis analyze the molding conditions characteristic required to formfor forming the trailing arm.

  • In this paper, Glass Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic (GFRTP) for automotive headlight source module was fabricated by compounding and injection molding using PPS (Poly Phenylene Sulfide) resin with glass fiber which has three cross section (round type, cocoon type, flat type). Tensile, flexural, impact properties were investigated on effect of cross section, glass fiber contents. And it was observed flatness, dimensional stability, fluidity depending on glass fiber cross section. As a result, flat glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic's mechanical properties were most excellent. Also, dimensional stability and flatness showed better results when using flat glass fiber.

Effects of relining materials on the flexural strength of relined thermoplastic denture base resins

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of relining materials on the flexural strength of relined thermoplastic denture base resins (TDBRs). MATERIALS AND METHODS. For shear bond strength testing, 120 specimens were fabricated using four TDBRs (EstheShot-Bright, Acrytone, Valplast, Weldenz) that were bonded with three autopolymerizing denture relining resins (ADRRs: Vertex Self-Curing, Tokuyama Rebase, Ufi Gel Hard) with a bond area of 6.0 mm in diameter and were assigned to each group (n=10). For flexural strength testing, 120 specimens measuring $64.0{\times}10.0{\times}3.3mm$ (ISO-1567:1999) were fabricated using four TDBRs and three ADRRs and were assigned to each group (n=10). The thickness of the specimens measured 2.0 mm of TDBR and 1.3 mm of ADRR. Forty specimens using four TDBRs and 30 specimens using ADRRs served as the control. All specimens were tested on a universal testing machine. For statistical analysis, Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey's test as post hoc and Spearman's correlation coefficient analysis (P=.05) were performed. RESULTS. Acry-Tone showed the highest shear bond strength, while Weldenz demonstrated the lowest bond strength between TDBR and ADRRs compared to other groups. EstheShot-Bright exhibited the highest flexural strength, while Weldenz showed the lowest flexural strength. Relined EstheShot-Bright demonstrated the highest flexural strength and relined Weldenz exhibited the lowest flexural strength (P<.05). Flexural strength of TDBRs (P=.001) and shear bond strength (P=.013) exhibited a positive correlation with the flexural strength of relined TDBRs. CONCLUSION. The flexural strength of relined TDBRs was affected by the flexural strength of the original denture base resins and bond strength between denture base resins and relining materials.

  • Thermoformed appliance, which has been recently introduced for dental usage, is an appliance made of thermoformed sheets and formed with positive or negative pressure under heat. Thermoplastic material is a kind of plastics and can be repeatedly softened by heat. It is classified into hard elastic foil, hard/soft compound foil and soft elastic foil, including BIOPLAST, BIOCRYL, IMPRELON, etc. It has been developed in 1969 and is available in various thickness, shape and color. There are two types of Vacuum former for thermoplastic materials; the pressure type and suction type. The former is much better than the latter for fabrication of various appliances due to its higher pressure. The authors have applied these appliances to some cases - chin cap, active retainer, individual Fluoride tray, mouth protector, bracket transfer mask, bruxism splint(night guard), Essix appliance - by pressure type Vacuum former($Biostar^{(R)}$). The thermoplastic appliances have numerous advantages such as simple procedure, short working time, clean and transparent product, less objectionable taste. But its outstanding advantage would be its excellent biocompatibility bacause it has no monomer and hence no tissue irritation. Although there is some limitations in its usage, it can be used widely for various purposes especaily for pediatric dentistry.

A Study on Crystallization of Thermoplastic Aromatic Polymer (열가소성 방향족 폴리머의 결정화 특성에 대한 연구)

  • Thermoplastic composite has been limitedly used in high performance aerospace industry due to relatively low mechanical properties even though it has various advantages. But, thermoplastic aromatic polymer composite has recently been researched and utilized much. In this study, PEEK and PPS neat resin film as representative thermoplastic aromatic polymer were processed through continuous heating, cooling and reheating cycle. Property change such as glass transition temperature and melting temperature were identified and crystallinity variation by different cooling rate were evaluated. In the first (heating) run, polymer specimens were kept for 5 minutes at higher temperature than melting point to remove previous thermal history, and crystallization reaction was controlled by adjusting cooling rate to 2, 5, 10, 20 and $40^{\circ}C/minute$ in the second (cooling) run. In the third (heating) run, specimen crystallinity were verified by measuring the melting enthalpy. The initial specimens containing high portion of amorphous structure exhibited cold crystallization and clear glass transition in the first run whereas they did not show in the third run due to the increase of crystalline structure portion. As cooling rate decreases through the second cooling run, the crystallinity of the specimen increased. PEEK polymer had 21.9~39.3% crystallinity depending on cooling rate change whereas PPS polymer showed 29.1~31.2%.
