  • All objects emit infrared above absolute temperature 0K. Infrared thermography is one of the nondestructive testing technologies to measure the temperature of the object. Infrared thermography shows infrared image which in a longer wavelength than visible light. Infrared technology can be employed regardless of the type or state of the objects. Thus, infrared thermography technique has been used in a wide variety of manufacturing processes in areas such as mechanical, electrical, chemical and medical applications. The advancement of using infrared technology has been increasing. In this paper, the principle of lock-in infrared thermography and its applications were investigated, and the direction of future development was discussed.

  • This study discusses the effects of infrared thermography in dentistry. Infrared thermography allows the quantification of infrared rays and provides useful data for dental care and research. It has been used for the diagnosis of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) and proposed as an objective measure of myofascial pain. It is closely related to temperature and produces beneficial objective data. A study of the heat emissions from facial structures has the potential to benefit dental diagnosis of TMD, postoperative inferior alveolar damage, and endodontic and conservative treatments. In this paper, we assessed infrared thermography in dentistry and consider future developments of infrared thermography.

Characteristics on Temperature Evolution in the Metallic Specimen by Ultrasound-Excited Thermography

  • In ultrasound-excited thermography, the injected ultrasound to an object is transformed to heat and the appearance of defects can be visualized by thermography camera. The advantage of this technology is selectively sensitive to thermally active defects. Despite the apparent simplicity of the scheme, there are a number of experimental considerations that can complicate the implementation of ultrasound excitation thermography inspection. Factors including acoustic horn location, horn-crack proximity, horn-sample coupling, and effective detection range all significantly affect the detect ability of this technology. As conclusions, the influence of coupling pressures between ultrasound exciter and specimen was analyzed, which was dominant factor in frictional heating model.

Review of Clinical Trials on Infrared Thermography Using Search of Papers in Medline within 5 Years (적외선 체열영상을 이용한 최신 해외 임상연구 동향)

  • Purpose : This study is to the recent trends of clinical trial using infrared thermography and to review its application in medicine. Methods : We searched for papers which had used infrared thermography in Medicine within 5 years, using English. Results : A total of 23 papers were but 8 were found, but 8 were not related to non-invasive infrared thermography. The other 15 papers were clinical trials about the effect of acupuncture and therapeutic massage, evaluation of post-hepatic neuralgia, sleep disorder, and regional circulation. Conclusion : These results suggest that infrared thermography can be used as a reliable and helpful method in many clinical trials.

The Effectiveness of Thermography in Diagnosis of Frey's Syndrome Following Parotidectomy (Frey씨 증후군의 진단에 있어서 Thermography의 유용성)

  • Objectives and Backgrounds : After parotidectomy, some of patients complain gustatory sweating, facial flushing and discomfort in the same area. A series of these symptoms are supposed to be caused by the aberrant regeneration of the secretory parasympathetic fibers to sweat glands and blood vessels of the skin following parotidectomy. In this study, we want to compare the efficacy of thermography to the Minor's starch-iodine test for determining the presence of Frey's syndrome. Materials and Methods : 48 patients who underwent total or superficial parotidectomy from March 2002 to December 2004 were selected for this study. A subjective clinical questionnaire and the objective Minor's starchiodine test were performed to evaluate the incidence of this syndrome. Total 21 patients were confirmed as positive Frey's syndrome and infrared thermography was performed for them. Result : Frey's syndrome occurred in 21 patients(43.8%). The average temperature of parotidectomy site and normal opposite area were $27.65^{\circ}C\;and\;26.41^{\circ}C$ respectively. Thermography showed temperature difference in 20 patient(95.2%) and the difference of temperature was statistically significant above $1.0^{\circ}C$(p<0.001). The severity of symptoms were related with the difference of temperature(p<0.05). Conclusion : Thermography is useful, non-invasive, simple and quantifying method to diagnose Frey's syndrome. Additionally, this geographic diagnosis is available to show the accurate area for botulinum toxin injection.

The Relativity of Thermography to HRV in Sasang Constitutional Groups (사상인(四象人)의 HRV와 체표온도간 상관성에 관한 고찰)

  • Objectives : This study was done to investigate the relativity of thermography to HRV(heart rate variability) in Sasang constitutional groups. Methods : We investigated 87 healthy workers consisted of 10 Taeumin, 47 Soeumin, 30 Soyangin. After diagnosing the Sasang constitution by QSCCII(Questionnaire for the Sasang Constitutional Classification), we ana lysed their HRV -time domain and frequency domain and also checked their thermography in April 2009. Results & Conclusions : Analysing the thermography, The whole skin temperature was showed equaly in many Taeumin, the face, Upper burner skin temperature was showed high in many Soeumin, and the abdomen skin temperature was showed low in many Soyangin. The relativity of the sympathetic index to skin temperature was high in Taeumin. The higher sympathetic index, the higher Upper burner skin temperature in Taeumin, the higer most of the skin temperature in Soyangin, lower the whole skin temperature in Soeumin.

  • Recently, thermography camera have been using for body-temperature monitoring. We report on fabrication of prototype thermography camera using the chalcogenide-glass lens and the camera test by analysis of thermal image. In this work, it was found out that thermography camera discerned body-temperature between 20 and $50^{\circ}C$ with noise equivalent temperature difference(NETD) of 87.7mK. It is confirmed that thermography camera using the chalcogenide-glass lens is applicable to the body-temperature monitoring system.

  • As a nondestructive inspection technology currently in use, infrared thermography has gradually expanded its application range to industry. The method detects only defect areas by grafting ultrasound on a technique of detecting infrared energy emitted from all objects with absolute temperature of 0 K and converting this energy into thermography for inspection. Ultrasound infrared thermography has merits including the ability to inspect a wide area in a short time without contacting the target object. This study investigated the applicability of the technique for defect detection using variable ultrasound excitation inspection methods on samples of Terfenol-D, a magnetostrictive material with a tunable natural resonant frequency.

NDE of Low-Velocity Impact Damage in GFRP Using Infrared Thermography Techniques

  • In this study, low-velocity impact damage (LVID) in glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) was investigated using pulse thermography (PT) and lock-in thermography (LIT) techniques. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the detection performance of each technique for LVID in GFRP. Unidirectional and cross-ply GFRPs were prepared with four energy levels using a drop weight impact machine and they were inspected from the impact side, which may be common in actual service conditions. When the impacted side was used for both inspection and thermal loading, results showed that the suggested techniques were able to identify the LVID which is barely visible to the naked eye. However, they also include limitations that depend on the GFRP thickness at the location of the delamination produced by the lowest impact energy of five joule.

  • Since real-time monitoring systems, such as early fault detection, have been very important, an infrared thermography technique was proposed as a new diagnosis method. This study focused on damage detection and temperature characteristic analysis of ball bearings using the non-destructive, infrared thermography method. In this paper, for the reliability assessment, infrared experimental data were compared with finite element analysis (FEA) results from ANSYS. In this investigation, the temperature characteristics of ball bearing were analyzed under various loading conditions. Finally, it was confirmed that the infrared thermography technique was useful for the real-time detection of damage to bearings.
