Development of the High Performance Thermoelectric Modules for High Temperature Heat Sources

  • From a viewpoint of heat stress at high temperatures and contact thermal resistance, it is confirmed that the optimal structure is the skeleton structure using Cu substrate on the cooling side, which has excellent heat conductivity and the optimal installation method is to adopt a carbon sheet and a mica sheet to the high temperature side, where Si grease is applied to the low temperature side, under pressurized condition. The power of the developed modules indicated 0.5W in an $FeSi_2$ module and 3.8 W with a SiGe module at 823K, respectively.

  • A small-scale thermoelectric cooling system was built in an effort to enhance the performance of the refrigeration system by utilizing the water-cooled jacket which was attached on the hot side of the thermoelectric module. Considered design parameters for the water-cooled jacket included the geometry of the flow passage inside the jacket and the flow rate of cooling water. The higher flow rate of cooling water in the jacket resulted in a better performance of the refrigeration system. The introduction of geometrical complexity of the cooling water flow passage to the cooling jacket also showed significant improvement on the performance of the thermoelectric refrigeration system such as the cooling capacity and the COP of the refrigeration system.

  • Recently the research for utilization of waste heat produced from electric power plants, casting factories, heat treating factories or commercial are being afforded by the need for energy saving. The objective of this study is to develop a thermoelectric generation system which unused energy from close-at-hand sources such as garbage incineration heat and industrial exhaust etc. into electricity. This paper a thermoelectric technology on a optimum system design method and efficiency and cost effective thermoelectric element on order to extract the maximum power output from energy conversion of waste energy. It is shown that the longitudinal stresses of module contacted with two point constrained Al tubes could be released more than those with a one-point constrained.

LED터널등 모듈의 폐열활용을 위한 열전소자의 발전 성능 분석 (Analysis of the Thermoelectric Devices' Power Generation Performance for Utilizing the Waste Heat of LED Tunnel Lighting Module)

  • In this paper, we propose the LED(Light-Emitting-Diode) emergency lighting in a tunnel by using the thermoelectric devices. To achieve high generated power, thermoelectric device should be have high Seebeck coefficient and small contact area. Also, we reveal that a moderate heatsink required for high generated power. From the waste heat of LED tunnel lighting module (25W), the generated power was 0.062W by thermoelectric device, and it could illuminate for 1hour after charge the battery of emergency lighting during about 101hours.

상용차용 캐빈냉방기의 전산 열유동 해석 (Computational Thermal Flow Analysis of a Cabin Cooler for a Commercial Vehicle)

  • The steady three-dimensional computational thermal flow analysis using standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was carried out to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a cabin cooler for a commercial vehicle. The heat exchanging method of this cabin cooler is to use the cooling effect of a thermoelectric module. In view of the results so far achieved, the air system resistance of a cabin cooler is about 12.4 Pa as a static pressure, and then the operating point of a cross-flow fan considering in this study is formed in the comparatively low flowrate region. The air temperature difference obtained from the cold part of an thermoelectric module is about $26^{\circ}C$, and the cooling water temperature difference obtained from the hot part of an thermoelectric module is about $3.5^{\circ}C$.

  • Electric power is generated by Seeback Effect if there is thermal difference in pettier module. Peltier module is composed by alumina, Bi-Te semiconductor and insulation (or air). If load is increased in pettier module, the alumina of module will be destroyed. One of the preventing method of module destruction is using damper between module and heat source. But the electric Power is dropped because of decrease of thermal difference, if thermal conductivity of damper was tourer than other thermoelectric materials. We design, Polymer Pad for enhancing thermoelectric porter. As the result of these experiment, Polymer Pad is more superior than the Rubber in the stability and thermal conduction.

  • This paper presents an accelerated life test to estimate the lifetime of thermoelectric module for home water purifier. Clamping force and thermal cycle are selected as accelerating variables through the technical review about failure mechanism. It is assumed that its lifetime follows weibull distribution. The relationship, acceleration factor, and BP life at design condition are estimated by analyzing the accelerated life test data.
