  • In the present work, we have investigated the adsorption efficiency of carbon/iron oxide nanocomposite towards removal of hazardous brilliant green (BG) from aqueous solutions. Carbon/iron oxide nanocomposite was prepared by chemical precipitation and thermal treatment of carbon with ferric nitrate at $750^{\circ}C$. The resulting material was thoroughly characterized by TEM, XRD and TGA. The adsorption studies of BG onto nanocomposite were performed using kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. The adsorption kinetics shows that pseudo-second-order rate equation was fitted better than pseudo-first-order rate equation. The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. Equilibrium data was fitted well to the Langmuir model with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 64.1 mg/g. The thermodynamic parameters were also deduced for the adsorption of BG onto nanocomposite and the adsorption was found to be spontaneous and endothermic.

  • Recently, the technologies to utilize the cold energy of liquefied natural gas (LNG) have attracted significant attention. In this paper, thermodynamic performance analysis of combined cycles consisting of ammonia Rankine cycle (AWR) and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with LNG Rankine cycle to recover low-grade heat source and the cold energy of LNG. The mathematical models are developed and the effects of the important system parameters such as turbine inlet pressure, ammonia mass fraction, working fluid on the system performance are systematically investigated. The results show that the thermal efficiency of AWR-LNG cycle is higher but the total power production of ORC-LNG cycle is higher.

  • Thermodynamic cycles using binary mixtures as working fluids offer a high potential for utilization of low-temperature heat sources. This paper presents a thermodynamic performance analysis of Goswami cycle which was recently suggested to produce power and cooling simultaneously and combines the Rankine cycle and absorption refrigeration cycle by using ammoniawater mixture as working fluid. Effects of the system parameters such as concentration of ammonia and turbine inlet pressure on the system are parametrically investigated. Results show that refrigeration capacity or thermal efficiency has an optimum value with respect to ammonia concentration as well as to turbine inlet pressure.

  • Marine transportation industry is undergoing a number of problems. Some of these problems are associated with conventional marine fuel-oils. Many researchers have showed that fuel-oil is considered as the main component that causes both environmental and economic problems, especially with the continuous rising of fuel cost. This paper investigates the capability of using natural gas and hydrogen as alternative fuel instead of diesel oil for marine gas turbine, the effect of the alternative fuel on gas turbine thermodynamic performance and the employed mathematical model. The results showed that since the natural gas is categorized as hydrocarbon fuel, the thermodynamic performance of the gas turbine cycle using the natural gas was found to be close to the diesel case performance. The gas turbine thermal efficiency was found to be 1% less in the case of hydrogen compared to the original case of diesel.

  • High-temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) using solid oxide cell is a challenging method for highly efficient large-scale hydrogen production as a reversible process of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The overall efficiency of the HTSE hydrogen and synthesis gas production system was analyzed thermo-electrochemically. A thermo-electrochemical model for the hydrogen and synthesis gas production system with solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) and very high temperature gas-cooled reactor (VHTR) was established. Sensitivity analyses with regard to the system were performed to investigate the quantitative effects of key parameters on the overall efficiency of the production system. The overall efficiency with SOEC and VHTR was expected to reach a maximum of 58% for the hydrogen production system and to 62% for synthesis gas production system by improving electrical efficiency, steam utilization rate, waste heat recovery rate, electrolysis efficiency, and thermal efficiency. Therefore, overall efficiency of the synthesis production system has higher efficiency than that of the hydrogen production system.

  • The amount and quality of waste heat from a resource recovery facility were measured. The temperature of exhaust gas was $176.6^{\circ}C$ and the amount of that was 13.8 kg/s. This research designed a waste heat recovery system whose working fluid is R-245fa. It simulated three study cases as follows. In simulation of a basic ORC system, the turbine power output and thermal efficiency were respectively 96.56 kW, 14.3%. In simulation of a superheater connection, 0.09% of efficiency could be improved due to the increase of enthalpy by overheating of working fluid, but the obtained output was decreased with 16.58kW because of the decrease of working fluid mass. In simulation of a process heater connection, efficiency was increased up to 38.51%.

  • Recently organic flash cycle (OFC) has been proposed which is a vapor power cycle where heat addition occurs with the working fluid remaining in the liquid state. This study proposes a modified OFC with regeneration and carries out thermodynamic performance analysis of the system utilizing low-temperature heat source in the form of sensible energy. Effects of working fluid and flash temperature are systemically investigated on the system performance such as net power production and thermal efficiency. Results show that the net power production has a peak value with respect to the flash temperature but the thermal efficiency increases with the flash temperature. The regenerative system shows higher thermal efficiency compared to the original OFC and improved potential for recovery of low-temperature heat sources.

  • Water supply/intake pumps operation use 70~80% of power costs in water treatment plants. In the water treatment plant, seasonal and hourly differential electricity rates are applied, so proper pump scheduling can yield power cost savings. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to develop an optimal water supply pump scheduling scheme. An optimal operation method of water supply pumps by using genetic algorithm was developed. Also, a method to minimize power cost for water supply pump operation based on pump performance derived from the thermodynamic pump efficiency measurement method was proposed. Water level constraints to provide sufficient disinfection performance in a clearwell and reservoirs were calibrated. In addition, continuous operation time constraints were calibrated to prevent frequent pump switching. As a result of optimization, savings ratios during 7 days in winter and summer were 4.5% and 5.1%, respectively. In this study, the method for optimal water pump operation was developed to secure disinfection performance in the clearwell and to save power cost. It is expected that it will be used as a more advanced optimal water pump operation method through further studies such as water demand forecasting and efficiency according to pump combination.

  • In this study, acombined cogeneration power plant produced two types of thermal energy and electric or mechanical power in a single process. The performance of each component of the gas turbine-combined cogeneration system was expressed as a function of the fuel consumption of the entire system, and the heat and electricity performance of each component. The entire system consisted of two gas turbines in the upper system, and two heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), a steam turbine, and two district heat exchangers in the lower system. In the gas turbine combined cogeneration system, the performance test after 10,000 hours of operation time, which is subject to an ASME PTC 46 performance test, was carried out by the installation of various experimental facilities. The performance of the overall output and power plant efficiency was also analyzed. Based on the performance test data, the test results were compared to confirm the change in performance. This study performed thermodynamic system analysis of gas turbines, heat recovery steam generators, and steam turbines to obtain the theoretical results. A comparison was made between the theoretical and actual values of the total heat generation value of the entire system and the heat released to the atmosphere, as well as the theoretical and actual efficiencies of the electrical output and thermal output. The test results for the performance characteristics of the gas turbine combined cogeneration power plant were compared with the thermodynamic efficiency characteristics and an error of 0.3% was found.

  • The present study investigated the effect of key parameters on the performance of a cascade system using R-22 and R-23 refrigerants. Experimental data for the cascade system have been compared with simulation results using thermodynamic analysis. The cascade system tested at the evaporating temperature of $-80^{\circ}C $ and the condensing temperature of$40^{\circ}C $. The key experimental parameters were the evaporating temperature of the HTC(-35, -30, -25, -20, $-15^{\circ}C $) and mass flux of the HTC(200, 250, 300kg/$m^2$s). As the evaporating temperature and the mass flux of the HTC were increased respectively, the COP and the refrigerating efficiency were increased and then decreased while the volume flow rate per unit refrigeration capacity showed the opposite trend. The maximum COP and refrigerating efficiency were obtained at the evaporating temperature of the HTC of $-25^{\circ}C $ and the mass flux of 250 kg/$m^2$s.
