This paper deals with approximate integral solutions to the one-dimensional model describing the charging process of stratified thermal storage tanks. Temperature is assumed to be the form of Fermi-Dirac distribution function, which can be separated to two sets of cubic polynomials for each hot and cold side of thermal boundary layers. Proposed approximate integral solutions are compared to the previous works of the approximate analytic solutions and show reasonable agreement. The approach, however, has benefits in mathematical difficulties, complicated solution form and unstable convergence of series solution founded in the previous analytic solutions. Solutions for a semi-infinite region, which have simple closed form solutions, give close agreement to those for a finite region. Thermocline thickness is obtained in closed form and shows proportional behavior to the square root of time and inverse proportional behavior to the square root of flow rate.

The basic processes responsible for the generation of oceanic fronts were reviewed. In particular the process of a shelf sea front produced by tidal stirring was identified from the one dimensional model of the water column in the coastal area, which incorporates the microscale process for the formation of a tidal front. Also a new criterion to predict its location was suggested. The time evolutions of the distributions of density and turbulent kinetic energy calculated from the model show that the criterion for the formation of a thermocline can be predicted as $R{\delta}^4$~ constant for large $\delta$ ($\delta$>0.5), but the dependence on $\delta$ decreases as $\delta$ goes to O, where $R=H^4Q/{K_b}^3$,{\;}{\delta}=1-Do/H$, Q is the buoyancy flux at the surface, $K_b$ is the eddy diffusivity maintained at the bottom and Do is the depth of a thermocline in the absence of bottom mixing. The depth of a thermocline was found to decrease as the bottom mixing increases for a given value of Do. The results were interpreted in comparison with the previous studies.

The primary goal of this study is to determine the distribution characteristics using a scientific echo sounder in the Yellow Sea west of South Korea. The survey was carried out between 33$^{\circ}$00'N~37$^{\circ}$00'N latitude and 124$^{\circ}$00'E~126$^{\circ}$00'E longitude during the months of May and August, 1999 and April, 2000. The ships used in this survey were the R/V Chung-kyeong(G/T 300) and R/V Dong-baek(G/T 1,050) of Yeosu National University. The results obtained are as follows : 1. From the oceanographic data the Yellow Sea were divided into three sea areas which were the western waters of Chejudo, Mokpo and Kunsan. The oceanographic conditions were different in each of these three areas and the western waters of Chejudo were higher about 1~5$^{\circ}C$ more than the western waters of Gunsan. Generally, thermoclines were presented clearly in all three areas, but more so in August than in May according to seasons. 2. The horizontal distribution of S$_{A}$(area backscattering coefficient per unit area) value is that the western sea waters of Chejudo area are higher than that of the western sea waters of Mokpo and Gunsan. 3. The vortical distribution of S$_{A}$ value varies with thermocline that the harder thermocline is, the higher the S$_{A}$ value is. 4. The S$_{A}$ values on the types of biomass distribution are different with frequency. At the 38kHz, the demersal schools have higher values than the pelagic schools. At the 120kHz, the pelagic schools have higher values than the demersal schools.
Hyrdography and deep currents were measured from 1997 to 1999 to investigate deep-sea environments in the KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area of the northeastern tropical Pacific. KODOS area is located meridionally from the North Equatorial Current to the boundary between the North Equatorial Current and the Equatorial Counter Current. Strong thermocline exists between 10 m and 120 m depths at the study area. Since that strong thermocline does hardly allow vertical mixing between surface and lower layer waters, vertical distributions of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and nutrients drastically change near the thermocline. Salinity-minimum layer, which indicate the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) and the Antartic Intermediate Water (AAIW), vertically occupies vertically at the depths from 500 m down to 1400 m. The NPIW and the AAIW horizontally occur to the north and to the south of $7^{\circ}N$, respectively. The near-bottom water shows the physical characteristics of $1.05^{\circ}C$ and 34.70 psu at the depths of 10 m to 110 m above the bottom (approximately 4000-5000 m), which was originated from the Antarctic Circumpolar Water. It flows northeastwards for 2 to 4 months at the study area, and its mean velocity was 3.1-3.7 cm/s. Meanwhile, reverse (southwestward) currents appear for about 15 days with the average of 1.0-6.1 cm/s every 1 to 6 months. Dominant direction of the bottom currents obtained from the data for more than 6 months is northeastward with the average speeds of 1.7-2.1 cm/s. Therefore, it seems that deep waters from the Antarctica flow northwards passing through the KODOS area in the northeastern tropical Pacific.
Underwater acoustic channel impulse responses (CIR) are influenced by sound speed profile (SSP), and the variation of CIR has significant effects on the performance of underwater acoustic communication systems. A significant change of SSP can occur within a short period, which must be considered during the design of underwater acoustic modems. This paper statistically analyzes the effect of the variation of SSP on the long-range acoustic signal propagation in shallow-water with thermocline using numerical modeling based on the data acquired from JACE13 experiment near Jeju island. The analysis result shows that CIR changes variously according to the SSP and the depth of the transmitter and receiver. We also found that when the transmitter and receiver are deeper, the variation of sound wave propagation pattern is smaller and signal level becomes higher. All CIR obtained in this study show that a series of bottom reflections due to downward refraction and small bottom loss in the shallow water with thermocline can be very important factor for long-range signal transmission and the performance of underwater acoustic communication system in time varying ocean environment can be very sensitive to the variation of SSP even for a short period of time.
This paper aims to understand the effects of a turbidity flow intrusion on eutrophication in Daecheong Dam Reservoir. CE-QUAL-W2, a two-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model, is applied. The elevation of the reservoir water surface is used to validate the hydrodynamic model parameters and maximum fluctuations in the water surface elevations reaches about 1 m in the reservoir. During the heavy storm season, July, the thermocline submerged to less than 30 m below the surface. The thickness of the thermocline also reduced to 10 to 15 m. While the average TSS in June, the beginning of the monsoon was still low but it peaked in July due to heavy rainfall. Vertical profiles of the TSS regime in July indicated higher concentration in upper water layers and then the regime moves gradually downward in accordance with the time lapse. Due to the dam spillway opening, high concentrations of TSS attributed to storm turbidity ascended to the upper water layer by following the upward current movement and then, the regime precipitated to a layer below 30 to 40 m after September.
In this paper, the most important oceangraphic phenomena of the summer season in the East China Sea are reviewed. The hydrographic conditions in the suface layer above the seasonal thermocline are under great influence from solar heating, fresh water runoff mainly from the Yangtze River, and summer wind fields. In the lower layer below the thermocline, several distinct water masses e.g. the Kuroshio surface water, the Western North Pacific Central Water and the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water are intruded in response to the adjustment of the field of mass to the various dynamical processes. The frontal mixing between the intruded Yellow Sea Bottom Cold. Water and the Western North Pacific Central Water takes place in the bottom layer over the continental shelf south off Cheju Is. This mixed water probably has mush influence on the water properties of the intermediate and bottom layer around Cheju Is. and the south coast of Korea.
The red tide related with Cochlodinium Polykrikoides bloom has been frequently occurred around the South Sea of Korea and caused the economic loss in the coastal breeding grounds. The outbreak scale was usually change by physical, biological and environmental condition at each years. Relatively large-scale red tide occurred in 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003 through spatial scale, duration and maximum density. Compared the scale of red tide with physical condition around the South Sea, the lower coastal temperature on August around the South Sea corresponded with the large scale red tide. By serial oceanographic investigations on August in the South Sea and estimated wide area temperature information by satellite, SSTA around the South Sea and wide area was negative when the outbreak of red tide was large scale. From the results of temperature difference between surface and 30m layers, the occurrence of enormous red tide has a tendency when the temperature gradient around the seasonal thermocline was weakened. Larger Kuroshio volume transport in the upstream was also corresponded with the large scale red tide.
Vertical mixing in the ocean affects the formation of water masses as well as the vertical distribution of nutrients and dissolved substances. this study is to investigate the effect of stability on the intensity of vertical transfer in the case of shallow and straitfied channel. It is found that the relation of the stability and vertical turbulent diffusion is given by K$\sub$z/ = -${\beta}$-(c+${\beta}$) / ${\alpha}$(E-1/${\alpha}$) where K$\sub$z/ and E denotes the vertical turbulent diffusion coefficient and stability, respectively. The empirical coefficients ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ and c depend on the magnitude of vertical components and stability, i.e., through thermocline intensity. The study indicates that the diffusivity of the surface mixed layer is (K$\sub$z/)=300∼1,200$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec, the thermocline layer is (K$\sub$z/)= 50∼200$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec and the cold layer is (K$\sub$z/)=200∼600$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec based on near- minimum least-squares error estimates from the regression analysis. An important result of our study comes out that the model is in accordance with the general trends of the effect of stability on the vertical turbulent diffusion coefficients in the case of shallow and strongly stratified channel.

We studied algal growth-related water quality of the Sangsa lake which is the drinking water reservoir for the south-eastern region of Jeonnam province. Peridinium cinctum and several diatomic algal species frequently caused water bloom throughout the lake from early spring to late autumn. With the heaviest predominance of Peridinium cintum in May 2003, COD was 22.7 mg/l in the surface layer. Highly turbid surface water of 15 NTU was also caused by Perdinium bloom. Cyanobacterial growth was effectively prohibited by dominant growth of Peridinium in the Sangsa lake, otherwise confronted with cyanobacterial bloom. Dense algal layer was confined in the upper several meters of the water column above the thermocline, which gives relatively algae-free water in deeper layer suitable for drinking source water supply. Upon collapse of thermocline, water quality of the surface layer was improved while deeper layer was deteriorated. This paper deals with some details of water quality changes with algal growth in the Sangsa lake past two years.
