The present work suggests a numerical approach using a thermoacoustic network model for the eigenvalue calculation of thermoacoustic instability problems in an aero gas turbine combustor. The model is developed based on the conservation laws for mass, momentum, and energy between acoustic network elements with an area change. Acoustic field in a practical aero gas turbine combustor which has a complicated flow path is analyzed using the current model. The predictive capabilities of the current modeling approach are compared with the acoustic characteristics calculated using Helmholtz solver based on 3D finite element method(FEM).

This paper reviews the state-of-the-art thermoacoustic(TA) modeling techniques and research trend to predict major parameters determining combustion instabilities in lean premixed gas turbine combustors. Linear TA modeling results give us an information on eigenfrequencies and initial growth rate of the instabilities. For the prediction, linear relation equation between acoustic waves and heat release oscillations should be derived in the determined system. Key information for this analysis is to determine the heat release fluctuations in the combustor, which is typically obtained by using n-${\tau}$ function from flame transfer function measurements and/or predictions. Great advancement in the linear TA modeling has been made over a couple of decades, and some successful prediction results have been reported in actual gas turbine combustors. However nonlinear TA model developments which are required to analyze nonlinear system behaviors such as limit cycle saturation and transition phenomena are still limited in a very simple system. In order to fully understand combustion instabilities in a complicated real system, nonlinear flame dynamics and acoustic wave interaction with nonlinear system boundary conditions should be explained from the nonlinear TA model developments.

The effect of sound on the heat transfer from an isothermal cylinder in cross flow is investigated by numerical analysis. The modeling is made for the laminar incompressible flow fluctuating in the range of the Reynolds number, 5.leq.Re.leq.35, by the sinusoidal acoustic field. The instantaneous response of the flow and heat transfer is simulated for various frequencies. It is shown that the heat transfer amplitude decreases and the phase lags behind the flow velocity with increase in the frequency. The time-mean effects of the acoustic field on the flow field and heat transfer, known as the acoustic and thermoacoustic streaming, are analyzed. The time-mean heat transfer coefficients are decreased around the forward stagnation point but increased in the wake region. Such a local difference in heat transfer coefficients is a function of the frequency and becomes greatest at some frequency. However, with balance between the local increase and decrease, the overall heat transfer coefficient is almost unaffected by sound.

A loud speaker-driven zero-c.o.p. thermoacoustic refrigerator where an automotive catalytic converter is utilized as a stack has been fabricated and investigated experimentally. Without any heat exchangers at both ends of stack(and thus with zero c. o. p.), temperatures on the stack are measured and various heat transfer rates are calculated from the measured temperatures. Temperatures on the stack have been also calculated numerically using a finite difference method. The measured temperatures are in fair agreement with the calculated temperatures for lower frequency than 300Hz, however, the former deviates from the latter considerably for higher frequency. Two types of c. o. p. have been defined as appropriate to the experiment. While the nominal c. o. p. is zero(the condition in which the pumped heat flow rate in the pore exactly cancels the axial heat conduction down the stack), the true c. o. p. is found to be about 0.14 for 300Hz from the experiments.
Acoustic resonance characteristics were analyzed and their effect on the refrigerating capability were experimentally verified on a fabricated Hofler-type thermoacoustic refrigerating system. Factors governing the overall resonance are the resonator composed of a cavity and two pipes, the loudspeaker driving the resonator, and rear side impedance characteristics of speaker housing. All these are coupled with electric constants of the speaker to exhibit electric resonance. Also the 'wall-effect' within the resonator causes attenuation to reduce the sharpness of the resonance. Analysis and experiments showed housing and the wall-effect of the resonator reduce the sharpness of resonance. Maintaining the accuracy of the resonance is, therefore, very important for efficient refrigeration.

High-frequency combustion instability results from a feedback coupling between the unsteady heat release rate and the acoustic waves formed resonantly in the combustion chamber. It can be modeled as thermoacoustic problems with various degrees of the assumptions and simplifications. This paper presents numerical analysis of self-excited combustion instabilities in a variable-length lean-premixed combustor and designs of passive control devices such as baffle and acoustic resonators in a framework of 3-D FEM Helmholtz solver. Nonlinear behaviors such as steep-fronted shock waves and a finite amplitude limit cycle are also investigated with a compressible flow simulation technique.
Sound waves and acoustic energy generated by two identical TA (ThermoAcoustic) lasers were analyzed and studied. One end of the ceramic stack was heated by a thin NiCr wire wound around that end. The other end of the stack was cooled by natural convection of atmospheric air. The wavelength of the sound waves generated by a single TA laser was four times the tube length and the amplitude of the waves increased with the heating rate. SPL (SoundPressure Level) meters and microphones were employed to measure and study the sound waves at different distances from the glass tube opening and at the focusing point of the TA laser pair for different laser position arrangements. The sound waves of the two TA lasers at the focusing point were found to be almost 180 degrees out of phase when the openings of the two lasers were very close to each other and the angle between the laser axes was small. When the two TA lasers were placed far apart, the sound wave amplitudes and the phase difference between the two laser outputs varied periodically with time. The frequencies of the sound waves changed when the openings of the two TA lasers were in close vicinity and the angle between the laser axes exceeded a certain value. In this case, the glass tube opening was no longer a pressure anti-node and the wavelength of the fundamental mode was not equal to four times the tube length.
A 3D FEM (Finite Element Method) based Helmholtz solver has been commonly used to characterize fundamental acoustic behavior and investigate dynamic instability features in many combustion systems. In this approach, a geometrical simplification of the target system has been generally made in order to reduce computational time and cost because a real combustor and fuel nozzle have a very complicated flow passage. The feasibility of these simplifications is quantitatively investigated in a small aero gas turbine nozzle in term of acoustic characteristics. It is found that the simplification in a nozzle geometry during the 3D FEM analysis process has no great influence on the acoustic modeling results, while the calculation complexity can be improved for a similar modeling accuracy.
Transverse acoustic mode in annular combustion chambers affects air-fuel mixing characteristics in the nozzle and can result in heat release fluctuations in the combustor. In addition, the acoustic mode coupling between the nozzle and the combustion chamber is one of the key parameters determining combustion instability phenomenon in the annular combustor. In this study, acoustic coupling between the nozzle and annular combustor was numerically analyzed using 3D-based in house FEM code. As a result, it was found that the acoustic mode inside the combustion chamber at anti-node locations of the transverse mode was strongly influenced by the nozzle inlet boundary conditions.

This study is on the pulsating combustion of premixed gas in a Rijke type combustor made of a honeycomb flame holder in a tube. Modelling for the onset condition of the oscillation is made by the ratio of the acoustic power generation based on the analysis of heat transfer to the power loss due to the thermoviscous dissipation and radiation. Experiment is performed for the characteristics of acoustic, thermal and combustion. It is shown that the theoretical modelling for the oscillation may be used as a limit condition. And the combustion analysis for the acoustic power generation is needed for better prediction of the onset condition. Experimental result shows that, by pulsation, the flame length is shortened and the flame temperature is decreased with increase in the heat transfer coefficient. The NO$_{x}$ concentration in the exhaust gas is significantly reduced by pulsation and the concentration of unburned hydrocarbon shows a little increase.e.
