  • A thermally irreversible photochromic system, 2,3-bis(2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thienyl)maleic anhydride (MTMA), has been studied by semi-empirical molecular orbital methods. There are one pair of stable conformations for the closed-ring form and three pairs for the open-ring form, each pair consisting of two mirror-image conformations. Interconversion between the parallel and anti-parallel conformations of the open-ring form is restricted due to high energy barriers. Only the anti-parallel conformation appears to be responsible for photochromic cyclization. Thermostability of the compound is attributed to an avoided crossing at high energy in the ground states of the isomers, whereas the photoreactivity can be explained by the mutually connected excited singlet (S1) states of the isomers, forming a double well potential with a low energy barrier. The large solvent effects can be partly explained with the low dipole moment of the anti-parallel conformation of MTMA in the S1 state. The large variation of quantum efficiency suggests that excess vibronic energy can be utilized to provide the activation energy for the photochromic reaction.

  • Room-temperature continuous operation of two-dimensional photonic crystal lasers is achieved at 1.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ by using InGaAsP slab-waveguide triangular photonic crystal on top of wet-oxidized aluminum oxide. The main difficulty in the realization of photonic bandgap (OBG) structures has been the nontrivial difficulties in nanofabrication, especially for 3-dimensional PBG structures. Recently, 2-D PBG structures have attracted a great deal of attention due to their simplicity in fabrication and theoretical study as compared to the three-dimensional counterparts [1]. Recently, air-gulfed 2-D slab PBG lasers were reported by Caltech group [2]. However, this air-slab structure is mechanically fragile and thermally unforgiving. Therefore, a new structure that can remove this thermal limitation is dearly sought after for 2-D PBG laser to have practical meaning. In this talk, we report room-temperature continuous operation of 2-D photonic bandgap lasers that are thermally and mechanically stable.

  • Mono-, or di-substituted chlorodicyanovinyl benzene compound was reacted with an excess amount of ethylenediamine to give corresponding imidazoline product with high reaction yield. This reaction occurs by stable imidazoline ring-forming process through nucleophilic attack of terminal amine on the enaminonitrile adduct, the reaction intermediate, toward electropositive enamine carbon, which is accompanied by the release of neutral malononitrile moiety. The similar reaction with 1,2-phenylenediamine produced stable enaminonitrile-amine adduct at lower temperature which could be cyclized intramolecularly to thermally stable benzimidazole at elevated temperature in solution or in solid state. From the difunctional compound of both reactants, poly(enaminonitrile-amine) could be prepared as a new soluble precursor polymer for well-known polybenzimidazole (PBI). The thermal cyclization reaction accompanying the release of malononitrile molecules was studied using thermalanalysis and infrared spectroscopy.

  • Organic/inorganic hybrid materials have a lot of interest in various areas due to their fascinating properties. To control the location and dispersion of inorganic nanoparticles within polymer matrix. thiol-terminated polymeric ligands have been widely used to tune the surface property of nanoparticles. However, the specific binding between the thiol functional group and metal is unstable with increasing temperature. To archive the thermally-stable Au nanoparticles, we previously synthesized various UV-crosslinkable polymeric ligands, which have different compositions of polar, UV-crosslinkable azide unit comparing to non-polar 스티렌 units. After crosslinking the Au nanoparticles, it was found that the nanoparticles had superb stability at high temperature (above $180^{\circ}C$). In this work, we used thermally-stable Au nanoparticles to control the location within the polymer matrix. By changing the amount of polar azide units in the polymeric ligands, we could precisely control the location of nanoparticles from one domain to the interface of block copolymer templates.

  • Spiro[fluorene-9,4'-[4H]indeno[1,2-b]furan] was synthesized, and its $\pi$-conjugation was efficiently elongated using palladium-catalyzed C-H arylation of a furan moiety. The resulting $\pi$-conjugated compounds showed intense fluorescence and extremely high thermal stability.

  • Phase transition and electrical conductivity of homologous series phases Lan+1NinO3n+1 (n=1,2,3, …, $\infty$) have been investigated. These La-Ni-O chemical compounds were synthesized by solid state reaction. The compound LaNiO3 was thermally stable in air only up to about 1120 K and above this temperature decomposed into homologous series phases Lan+1NinO3n+1 and NiO.

  • We proposed a soft-lithographic method for aligning a liquid crystal (LC) in patterned azimuthal orientations. It is demonstrated that a thermoplastic polystyrene layer is patterned from a thermally stable polyimide layer via pressure-assisted capillary force lithography, which provides multidirectional LC alignment condition simply followed by a unidirectional rubbing process.

  • Simulations of atmospheric diffusion process under stable and unstable conditions were carried out using both numerical and experimental methods. Results from the previous study show that numerical simulation using 3-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation and density deviation are in good agreement with typical plume pattern. In this study, we use experimental data of temperature and wind profile obtained from a thermally stratified wind tunnel as initial conditions for numerical simulation and compare the results.
