Direct-contact condensation experiments of atmospheric steam and steam/air mixture on subcooled water flowing co-currently in a rectangular channel are carried out uszng an infrared thermal camera system to develop a temperature measurement method. The inframetrics Model 760 Infrared Thermal Imaging Radiometer is used for the measurement of the temperature field of the water film for various flow conditions. The local heat transfer coefficient is calculated using the bulk temperature gradient along the (low direction. It is also found that the temperature profiles can be used to understand the interfacial condensation heat transfer characteristics according to the flow conditions such as noncondensable gas effects, inclination effect, and flow rates.
In this paper, we propose three compensation methods to solve problems in high-resolution airborne infrared camera and to improve long-range target information acquisition performance. First, image motion and temporal noise reduction technique which is caused by atmospheric turbulence. Second, thermal blurring image correction technique by imperfect performance of NUC(Non Uniformity Correction) or raising the internal temperature of the camera. Finally, DRC(Dynamic Range Compression) and flicker removing technique of 14bits HDR(High Dynamic Range) infrared image. Through this study, we designed techniques to improve the acquisition performance of long-range target information of high-resolution airborne infrared camera, and compared and analyzed the performance improvement result with implemented images.
Thermal error compensation has been developed for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining center with moving heat sources. The thermal error in CNC machining center has an effect on machining accuracy more than the geometric error does. Thus, temperature distributions of a spindle unit have been analyzed numerically by a Finite Differential Method and experimentally by an infrared (IR) camera in this study. A multiple variable method has been derived to estimate the thermal deformation of the machine origin stably and effectively after measuring deformation and temperature data. The experimental results for a vertical machining center have shown that the thermal errors of the machine origins were reduced more than 30% by the developed method.
In these days, demand of a LCD monitor is remarkably increasing with development of the LCD technology. However, there are thermal problems for improvement of efficiency for the LCD monitor. Thus, this research analyzed thermal problems such as convection and conduction heat transfer characteristics in the LCD monitor using an infrared (IR) camera. Also, the results of the outer side of the front LCD panel using the IR camera have been compared with the results of the inner side of the front panel using T-type thermocouples. The equations have been derived for the temperature distribution of the inner side of the front LCD panel by a multiple regression method including variables for ambient temperature, humidity and temperature differences between the front and back panels of the LCD monitor.
In this paper, I present the domestic development of near infrared camera systems for the ground telescope and the space satellite. These systems are the first infrared instruments made for astronomical observation in Korea. KASINICS (KASI Near Infrared Camera System) was developed to be installed on the 1.8m telescope of the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) in Korea. KASINICS is equipped with a $512{\times}512$ InSb array enable L band observations as well as J, H, and Ks bands. The field-of-view of the array is $3.3'{\times}3.3'$ with a resolution of 0.39"/pixel. It employs an Offner relay optical system providing a cold stop to eliminate thermal background emission from the telescope structures. From the test observation, limiting magnitudes are J=17.6, H=17.5, Ks=16.1 and L(narrow)=10.0 mag at a signal-to-noise ratio of 10 in an integration time of 100 s. MIRIS (Multi-purpose InfraRed Imaging System) is the main payload of the STSAT-3 in Korea. MIRIS Space Observation Camera (SOC) covers the observation wavelength from $0.9{\mu}m$ to $2.0{\mu}m$ with a wide field of view $3.67^{\circ}{\times}3.67^{\circ}$. The PICNIC HgCdTe detector in a cold box is cooled down below 100K by a micro Stirling cooler of which cooling capacity is 220mW at 77K. MIRIS SOC adopts passive cooling technique to chill the telescope below 200K by pointing to the deep space (3K). The cooling mechanism employs a radiator, a Winston cone baffle, a thermal shield, MLI of 30 layers, and GFRP pipe support in the system. Opto-mechanical analysis was made in order to estimate and compensate possible stresses from the thermal contraction of mounting parts at cryogenic temperatures. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of mechanical structure was also conducted to ensure safety and stability in launching environments and in orbit. MIRIS SOC will mainly perform the Galactic plane survey with narrow band filters (Pa $\alpha$ and Pa $\alpha$ continuum) and CIB (Cosmic Infrared Background) observation with wide band filters (I and H) driven by a cryogenic stepping motor.
Thermal infrared imaging is a highly promising technology for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance of electronic, electrical and mechanical elements in nuclear power plants. However, conventional low-cost infrared imaging systems suffer from poor spatial resolution compared to commercial CCD cameras. This paper describes an approach to enhance inspection performances for calandria reactor area of Wolsung nuclear power plant through the technique of superimposing thermal infrared image into real CCD image. In the occurrence of thermal abnormalities on observation points and areas of calandria reactor area, unusual hot image taken from thermal infrared camera is mapped upon re...
Infrared thermography using high-speed infrared camera has been recognized as a powerful method for various potential applications, such as nondestructive inspection, failure analysis, stress analysis, and medical fields, due to non-contact, high-speed, and high spatial resolution at various temperature ranges. In this investigation, damage evolution due to generation of hot spots on railway brake disc was investigated using the infrared thermography method. A high-speed infrared camera was used to measure the surface temperature of brake disc as well as for in-situ monitoring of hot spot evolution. From the thermographic images, the observed hot spots and thermal damage of railway brake disc during braking operation were qualitatively analyzed. Moreover, in this investigation, the previous experimental and theoretical studies on hot spots phenomenon were reviewed, and the current experimental results were introduced and compared with theoretical prediction.
Our laboratory originally developed the compact, multi-spectral, automatic aerial photographic system PKNU3 to allow greater flexibility in geological and environmental data collection. We are currently developing the PKNU3 system, which consists of a color-infrared spectral camera capable of simultaneous photography in the visible and near-infrared bands; a thermal infrared camera; two computers, each with an 80-gigabyte memory capacity for storing images; an MPEG board that can compress and transfer data to the computers in real-time; and the capability of using a helicopter platform. Before actual aerial photographic testing of the PKNU3, we experimented with each sensor. We analyzed the lens distortion, the sensitivity of the CCD in each band, and the thermal response of the thermal infrared sensor before the aerial photographing. As of September 2004, the PKNU3 development schedule has reached the second phase of testing. As the result of two aerial photographic tests, R, G, B and IR images were taken simultaneously; and images with an overlap rate of 70% using the automatic 1-s interval data recording time could be obtained by PKNU3. Further study is warranted to enhance the system with the addition of gyroscopic and IMU units. We evaluated the PKNU 3 system as a method of environmental remote sensing by comparing each chlorophyll image derived from PKNU 3 photographs. This appraisement was backed up with existing study that resulted in a modest improvement in the linear fit between the measures of chlorophyll and the RVI, NDVI and SAVI images stem from photographs taken by Duncantech MS 3100 which has same spectral configuration with MS 4000 used in PKNU3 system.
