Natural ventilation in a four and one-half span, double polyethylene commercial greenhouse was investigated with actual data collected at Quailcrest Farm near Wooster, Ohio. Moreover, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical technique, FLUENT V4.3, was used to predict natural ventilation rates, thermal conditions, and airflow distributions in the greenhouse. The collected climate data showed that the multi-span greenhouse was well ventilated by the natural ventilation system during the typical summer weather conditions. The maximum recorded air temperature difference between inside and outside the greenhouse was 3.5$^{\circ}C$ during the hottest (34.7$^{\circ}C$) recorded sunny day; the air temperatures in the greenhouse were very uniform with the maximum temperature difference between six widely dispersed locations being only 1.7$^{\circ}C$. The CFD models predicted that air exchange rates were as high as 0.9 volume per minute (A.C. .min$^{-1}$ ) with 2.5m.s$^{-1}$ winds from the west as designed.
The aim of this study is to produce cokes which can be used for the production of ferroalloy, for this purpose, domestic anthracite mixed with plastic was sintered at various condition. The combustion and physical properties of anthracite and plastic, coal separation, and the influence of factors on the strength of coke were investigated. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The three kinds of anthracite from the Samcheok region contained 25 to 30% ash of $100{\mu}m$ over size, and have the caloric value of 5,205 cal/g(TaeAn), 4,893 cal/g(JangSung), 4,873cal/g(KyongDong). 2. The recommendable conditions for heavy-fluid separation of the Samcheok coal are to set the specific gravity of heavy fluid to 2.4 and control the size of coal to $35{\sim}140mesh$. 3. It is concluded that phenolic resin powder, liquefied phenolic resin, SAN, and melamine resin can be used as a binder for the anthracite cokes, from the thermal analysis of various plastics. Especially, the liquefied phenolic resin was considered as the most suitable binder as it would simplify the process.
Under the era of energy crisis, hydrogen energy is considered as one of the most potential alternative energies. Liquid hydrogen has much higher energy density per unit volume than gas hydrogen and is counted as the excellent energy storage method. In this study, Navier-Stokes equations based on 2-phase model were solved by using a computational fluid dynamics program and the liquefaction process of gaseous hydrogen passing through a cryogenic cooling tube was analyzed. The copper with high thermal conductivity was assumed as the material for cryogenic cooling tube. For different inlet velocities of 5 m/s, 10 m/s and 20 m/s for hydrogen gas, the distributions of fluid temperature, axial and radial velocities, and volume fractions of gas and liquid hydrogens were compared. These research results are expected to be used as basic data for the future design and fabrication of cryogenic cooling tube to transform the hydrogen gas into liquid hydrogen.

When nonuniform thermal boundary conditions are imposed on the surface of a circular cylinder in crossflow, the heat transfer characteristics can be quite different compared to what is found for isothermal or constant heat flux boundary conditions. In the present analysis, two kinds of nonuniform boundary conditions along the circumference of the cylinder are considered in a uniform stream of air: step changes and linear profiles. Step changes in temperature can arise on the surface of an external, cylindrical, solar central receiver. As the working fluid(water) flows through the vertical tubes that ring the circumference of Solar One(a solar central receiver in Barstow, California), the solar flux on the receiver heats the water from a liquid to a superheated state. In this process, portions of the receiver panels, and thus portions of the circumference of the cylinder, function as a preheater, boiler, or superheater. Hence the surface temperature can vary significantly around the cylinder. Common engineering practice has been to use an average wall temperature with an isothermal cylinder heat transfer coefficient when estimating the convective loss in these kinds of situations.
Objectives: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are next-generation industrial nanoparticles which possess excellent mechanical strength along with good thermal conductivity and electric properties. Given these characteristics, carbon nanotubes are being widely applied in various fields, including research and development. However, concerns have been raised over hazardous properties due to their similar fiber shape to asbestos. Recent studies have shown that CNTs pose potential hazards which may cause fibrosis and/or lung inflammation similarly to asbestos. Methods: After intratracheal instillation of SWCNTs and MWCNTs to rats, pulmonary surfactant (PS) of the SWCNTs and MWCNTs was measured and analyzed using bronchoalveolar lavage fluid collected from the lung. After a single intratracheal instillation of SWCNTs and MWCNTs, phospholipid predominantly showed a significant increase compared to the control group, while proteins exhibited a significant increase both three days and one week after instillation. Results: As a result of surface tension, MWCNTs showed a significant decrease three days after treatment compared to the control group. In the case of the total cell number three days after instillation, MWCNTs revealed a temporarily significant increase when compared to the control group. For PMN number, when compared to the control group, SWCNTs displayed a significant increase throughout the observation period, while MWCNTs showed a significant increase three days and three months after treatment. Conclusions: After exposure to CNTs, the total cell number and PNT number, which indicate inflammatory response, were significantly increased. Therefore, this study suggests fiber-shaped CNTs may have a harmful effect on the lungs.

In this study, to examine the effect of a hole size change(smaller hole diameter) in the outer region of the lower-support-structure-bottom plate(LSSBP) on the reactor core-inlet flow-distribution, simulations were conducted with the commercial CFD software, ANSYS CFX R.15. The predicted results were compared with those of the original LSSBP. Through these comparisons, it was concluded that a more uniform distribution of the mass flow rate at the core-inlet plane could be obtained by reducing the hole size in the outer region of the LSSBP. Therefore, from the nuclear regulatory perspective, design change of the hole pattern in the outer region of the LSSBP may be desirable in terms of improving both the mechanical integrity of the fuel assembly and the core thermal margin.

A heated and expanded helium is used to pressurize liquid propellants in propellant tanks of propulsion system of liquid propellant launch vehicles. To produce a heated and expanded helium, an hot-gas heat exchanger is used by utilizing heat source from an exhausted gas, which was generated in a gas generator to operate turbine of turbo-pump and dumped out through an exhaust duct of engine. Both experimental and numerical approaches of hot-gas heat exchanger design were conducted in the present study. Experimentally, siliconites - electrical resistance types - were used to simulate the full heat condition instead of an exhausted gas. Cryogenic heat exchangers, which were immersed in a liquid nitrogen pool, were used to feed cryogenic gaseous helium in a hot-gas heat exchanger. Numerical simulation was made using commercially utilized solver - Fluent V.6.0 - to validate experimental results. Helically coiled stainless steel pipe and stainless steel exhausted duct were consisted of tetrahedron unstructured mesh. Helium was a working fluid Inside helical heat coil and regarded as an ideal gas. Realizable k-』 turbulent modeling was adopted to take turbulent mixing effects in consideration. Comparisons between experimental results and numerical solutions are Presented. It is observed that a resulted hot-gas heat exchanger design is reliable based on the comparison of both results.
In this study, investigated the synthesis method of p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) by amination of p-Diiodobenzene (PDIB) under supercritical ammonia and CuI catalyst conditions. We examined the effects of various process variables (e.g., reaction temperature, pressure, amount of ammonia inserted, amount of catalyst inserted, and reaction time) on the production yield of PPD by analyzing the Gas Chromatography (GC). The experimental results demonstrated that PPD was not produced under non-catalyst conditions, and PPD production yield increased with increasing temperature, pressure, amount of catalyst inserted, and reaction time. However, for the reaction temperature case, it was found that $200^{\circ}C$ was the optimal temperature, because thermal degradation of PPD occurred above $250^{\circ}C$. In addition, we confirmed the structure of PPD and the bonding characteristics of the amine group via FT-IR and H-NMR analysis.

An AMTEC (alkali metal thermal electric converter) is a device that is used for the direct conversion of heat to electricity. Sodium is used as the working fluid, and its circulation is driven by a capillary wick. The wicks used for circulation include an evaporator wick, artery wick, and condenser wick, and each wick has a pressure drop because of the circulation of liquid and vapor. For the circulation of sodium, the capillary pressure of the evaporator wick must be greater than the total pressure drop in the wicks. In this study, the pressure drop in the evaporator wick, artery wick, and condenser wick and the heat loss from the evaporator to the condenser through the artery wick were analyzed for the design of a 100 W AMTEC prototype. It was found that a particle diameter of 10 ${\mu}m$ is suitable for the evaporator wick to maintain a capillary pressure greater than total pressure drop in the circulation loop.

Heat transfer performance of tube bundles have long been investigated since they were widely used. Most of previous experimental and numerical works for tube bundles were performed with tube diameter in the range of 25~51mm and Reynolds number of $8.000{\leq}Re{\leq}30.000$. Recently, tube bundles with small diameter tube collects interests since the mini-channel tube provides higher compactness. The present work aims to investigate the applicability of previous correlations available in the open literature to the tube bundles with small diameter of 1.5mm and $3.000{\leq}Re{\leq}7.000$. A commercial CFD package was used to analyze the thermal-hydraulic performance of them. The results show that the Zukauskas correlation developed for larger diameter tube and higher Reynolds number are still in good agreement with them within the discrepancy of 4.7%. The analyses also show that the Nuselt number increases with a decrease in the longitudinal pitch.
