  • We are now developing a CFD program, AIRVIEW, with several numerical models and the SIMPLER solving method for constructing flow field and thermal comfort. This study is carried out for evaluating an accuracy of AIRVIEW. Comparisons of accuracy are carried out using Phoenics Version 3.4. In this study, we compare the turbulent kinetic energy distribution and local turbulent Re number obtained with Phoenics with those results simulated by AIRVIEW for three kinds of duct. It is observed from comparison of results that the turbulent kinetic energy values are significant due to the large velocity gradients in the region of flow. Numerical results for turbulent kinetic energy distribution and local turbulent Re number are that a good degree of agreement is found.

  • This paper focuses on human adaptive HVAC system that can regulate the thermal comfort of the resident in intelligent buildings. The thermal comfort is represented in this paper by PMV (Predicted Mean Vote) as defined by ISO 7730. This PMV value indicates how hot or cold a resident feels by considering temperature, humidity, resident's metabolic rate, relative air velocity, and clothing insulation. In order to develop such a system, a location detection system based on ZigBee module was used along with temperature sensors, other environment sensors. The human adaptive HVAC system was evaluated experimentally on a test bed emulating a room.

  • The transient heat transfer characteristics in the radiant heating panel were predicted by numerical analysis. Thermal behaviors of panel, such as temperature distributions in panel and convective and radiative heat fluxes in panel surface with respect to time were obtained. Heating hours per day, rate of energy supplied and maximum temperature differences at panel surface were also compared for several important parameters. The performance and thermal comfort of heating panel were studied and compared for various operating and design conditions such as pipe pitch, pipe location, pipe diameter and flow rate of hot water for the purpose of producing useful data, which can be used for the test and decision of efficient operating condition of the conventional heating systems or the optimal design of the new panel heating systems.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the thermoregulatory responses and wearing behavior of the cold-sensitive men when exposed to the mild cold of 14$^{\circ}C$. Two sessions of experiment were carried out and five healthy young men for the cold-sensitive group(CSG) and four healthy young for the cold-insensitive group(CIG) participated in the study as subjects CSG maintained rectal temperature lower than CIG due to their thicker clothing resulted in larger decrease of rectal temperature. CSG maintained skin temperatures higher than CIG. CSG felt cooler than CIG but wore thicker clothing for thermal comfort and this made keep their sensation warmer. These results were discussed in terms of autonomic and behavioral temperature regulation.
