  • A high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model for the lower plenum of the High-Temperature Test Facility (HTTF), a ¼ scale test facility of the modular high temperature gas-cooled reactor (MHTGR) managed by Oregon State University. In most next-generation nuclear reactors, thermal stress due to thermal striping is one of the risks to be curiously considered. This is also true for HTGRs, especially since the exhaust helium gas temperature is high. In order to evaluate these risks and performance, organizations in the United States led by the OECD NEA are conducting a thermal hydraulic code benchmark for HTGR, and the test facility used for this benchmark is HTTF. HTTF can perform experiments in both normal and accident situations and provide high-quality experimental data. However, it is difficult to provide sufficient data for benchmarking through experiments, and there is a problem with the reliability of CFD analysis results based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes to analyze thermal hydraulic behavior without verification. To solve this problem, high-fidelity 3-D CFD analysis was performed using the LES model for HTTF. It was also verified that the LES model can properly simulate this jet mixing phenomenon via a unit cell test that provides experimental information. As a result of CFD analysis, the lower the dependency of the sub-grid scale model, the closer to the actual analysis result. In the case of unit cell test CFD analysis and HTTF CFD analysis, the volume-averaged sub-grid scale model dependency was calculated to be 13.0% and 9.16%, respectively. As a result of HTTF analysis, quantitative data of the fluid inside the HTTF lower plenum was provided in this paper. As a result of qualitative analysis, the temperature was highest at the center of the lower plenum, while the temperature fluctuation was highest near the edge of the lower plenum wall. The power spectral density of temperature was analyzed via fast Fourier transform (FFT) for specific points on the center and side of the lower plenum. FFT results did not reveal specific frequency-dominant temperature fluctuations in the center part. It was confirmed that the temperature power spectral density (PSD) at the top increased from the center to the wake. The vortex was visualized using the well-known scalar Q-criterion, and as a result, the closer to the outlet duct, the greater the influence of the mainstream, so that the inflow jet vortex was dissipated and mixed at the top of the lower plenum. Additionally, FFT analysis was performed on the support structure near the corner of the lower plenum with large temperature fluctuations, and as a result, it was confirmed that the temperature fluctuation of the flow did not have a significant effect near the corner wall. In addition, the vortices generated from the lower plenum to the outlet duct were identified in this paper. It is considered that the quantitative and qualitative results presented in this paper will serve as reference data for the benchmark.

  • Hydrodynamic field alteration around a cylindrical pier using a curved vane is numerically investigated. The curved vane with various angles ranged from 10 to 220 degree is placed at the upstream of the cylindrical pier. Laminar flow is adopted in order to perform the steady-state analysis. It is found that the flow separation leads to the formation of four bubbles depending on the value of the curved vane angle. Two bubbles are located in the region between the rear of the curved vane and the leading surface of the cylindrical pier, while the remaining two bubbles are located at the wake zone behind the cylindrical pier. Numerical analysis is performed to reveal the hydrodynamic field and influence of curved vane on the formation and evolution of the bubbles. It is found that the center and size of the bubble depend mainly on the value of the curved vane angle. It is observed that the flow velocity vector shows clearly the alteration in the flow velocity direction especially at the leading surface and rear surface of the curved vane owing to the occurrence of flow separation and flow dissipation along the circumference of the vane.

  • Upper ocean response to typhoon Ewiniar (0603) and its impact on the following typhoon Bilis (0604) are investigated using observational data and numerical experiments. Data used in this study are obtained from the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS), ARGO, and satellite. Numerical simulations are conducted using 3-dimensional Princeton Ocean Model. Results show that when Ewiniar passes over the western North Pacific, unique oceanic responses are found at two places, One is in East China Sea near Taiwan and another is in the vicinity of IORS. The latter are characterized by a strong sea surface cooling (SSC), $6^{\circ}C$ and $11^{\circ}C$ in simulation and observation, under the condition of typhoon with a fast translation speed (8m $s^{-1}$) and lowering intensity (970 hPa). The record-breaking strong SSC is caused by the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water, which produces a strong vertical temperature gradient within a shallow depth of Yellow Sea. The former are also characterized by a strong SSC, $7.5^{\circ}C$ in simulation, with a additional cooling of $4.5^{\circ}C$ after a storm's passage mainly due to enhanced and maintained upwelling process by the resonance coupling of storm translation speed and the gravest mode internal wave phase speed. The numerical simulation reveals that the Ewiniar produced a unfavorable upper-ocean thermal condition, which eventually inhibited the intensification of the following typhoon Bilis. Statistics show that 9% of the typhoons in western North Pacific are influenced by cold wakes produced by a proceeding typhoon. These overall results demonstrate that upper ocean response to a typhoon even after the passage is also important factor to be considered for an accurate intensity prediction of a following typhoon with similar track.

  • When it comes to slim floor using asymmetric H-beam, it was designed that the steel member is embedded in concrete with relatively low thermal conductivity so as to minimize the deterioration of rigidity of steel member in fire. But given the bottom flange of asymmetric H-beam is directly exposed to the fire, the measure of applying the fireproof coating to improve the fire rate performance of slim floor beam was sought. The test was aimed at comparing the fireproof performance by adjusting the load ratio of 0.4 and 0.3, and The test was carried out to identify the 3-hour fire performance by reinforcing the beam as well as applying the fireproof coat, In the wake of comparing the specimen depending on variation of load ratio, lowering load ratio by 0.1 resulted in difference of 12 minutes and deflection was 39 mm. It was able to improve 12 minutes by reinforcing the beam and up to 102.4 mm in deflection.

  • In reality, the distinction between the Korean traditional culture and the cultures of other countries is at a delicate boundary. Additionally in the wake of the recent socio-cultural confrontation between Korea and China, it has become necessary to establish the foundation and area of Korean traditional culture and to actively utilize the importance of improving awareness of Korean traditional culture. To reorganize the reckless use of the gold foil pattern shown in the rental hanbok, data on the museum's collection of gold leaf patterns were collected and analyzed. Based on the gold foil, Gilsang characters such as Phoenix pattern, Crane pattern, Bat pattern, Flower pattern, Fruit pattern and recovery advice were extracted through references. The traditional gold foil pattern was reconstructed and relocated to design the gold leaf patch. Based on the collection and analysis of the museum's relics, the Wonsam & Daedae, Dangeui, Sranchima, Sagyusam, Jeonbok, Bokgun, and Daenggi were produced. Therefore, we present the possibility of producing gold foil and modern methods for producing gold foil using laser cutting techniques that can express refinement and complexity well, and gold foil thermal transfer paper with retouchable effects. Additionally, we would like to reflect upon the practicality and the convenience to modern people by considering the complexity and hassle of the traditional gold foil production process, and the disadvantages of processes that require relatively longer time. It intends to help revitalize the market of Korean traditional clothing and fashion products.

  • The effect of cutted pin in front of pin-fin array was analyzed for increasing the cooling performance of gas turbine blade. The numerical simulations were conducted to figure out the flow and thermal characteristics. The base case which is staggered pin-fin array, cut pin case 1 which has X2/Dp=1.25 cut pin and cut pin case 2 which has X3/Dp=1.75 cut pin were compared. The results showed that cut pin increases the strength of the horseshoe vortex which occurred at the leading edge of pin-fin array. Furthermore, the wake effect is reduced at the trailing edge of pin-fin array. As a result, the heat transfer distribution on the endwall increases. However, the friction factor increases owing to the installation of cut pin, but the thermal performance factor is increased maximum 23.8% in cut pin case 2. Therefore, installation of cut pin will be helpful for increasing the cooling performance of pin-fin array of gas turbine blade.

  • Under the economic banner of "self-reliance," North Korea has focused on hydro and thermal power as its main energy supply sources. However, in the face of extreme energy penury caused by machinery and material supply instability in the wake of the collapse of the former communist block as well as equipment aging and deterioration due to floods and other disasters, North Korea and international aid organizations are increasingly turning their attention toward energy source diversification. In particular, renewable energy is recognized as the best strategic energy source for North Korea and it is a decentralized energy option that is suitable in light of North Korea's power distribution networks and its pursuit of self-reliance. Biogas can contribute to improving the human rights situation of North Koreans in conjunction with an increase in food production. For this reason, renewable energy is the most promising option for an energy source that is likely to secure humanitarian aid from international organizations such as the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP). However, the implementation of such humanitarian aid has been hampered by rising concerns about the diversion of provided energy materials for military purposes and the disguised introduction of dual use items strategic materials as well as UN Security Council resolutions and sanctions of the international community against North Korea's military provocation, including nuclear tests and missile launches. This paper explores the possibility of solving this dilemma and proceeding with the humanitarian aid to North Korea by evaluating the potential for sanction and the risk of diversion of the possible products for biogas-related aid on the basis of the list of UN-sanctioned items.
