  • A preliminary study is performed in order to design an effective ventilation equipment for the control of possible pollutants in a workshop. To this end, the Patankar's SIMPLE methodology is used to investigate the flow characteristics of the contaminated thermal deflected jet which is encounted often in practical hood system. SIMPLE-Consistent algorithm is employed for the pressure-velocity coupling appeared in momentum equations. A two equation, k-$\varepsilon$ model is used for Reynolds stresses. The prediction data is compared well against the experimental results by Chang(1989). Considering the control of the wake due to its high turbulence together with the stagnant feature has been investigated in term of major parameters such as temperature and magnitude of the discharge velocity. Detailed discussions are made to reduce the size of the wake region which give rise to pollutant concentration stratification.

  • Measurements with a Langmuir probe, which are the most often used procedures of plasma diagnostics, can disturb plasma flows and change its characteristics quite a little because the probe should be inserted into thermal flowing plasmas. In this study, we calculated the characteristics of thermal plasmas with and without the probe into an atmospheric argon free-burning arc numerically, and investigated aerodynamic and thermal disturbances with temperature and axial velocity distributions. For the modelling of thermal plasmas, we have made two governing equations, which are on the thermal-flow and electromagnetic fields, coupled together with a commercial CFD package and user-coded subroutines. It was found that thermal disturbances happened to both sides of the probe, before and behind, seriously. Due to the aerodynamic disturbance, we could find that there were the stagnation point in front of the probe and the wake behind it. Therefore, aerodynamic and thermal disturbances caused by the probe insertion should be considered to increase the reliability of the probe diagnostics.

  • Submarines, which require a high degree of survivability, are among the most critical combat weapon systems in military strategic assets. Conventional submarines need air to operate their propulsion systems. Exhaust gases released into the water during snorkel navigation heat the surrounding fluid, producing a temperature wake. This wake, in turn, reduces the submarine's survivability. In this study, we conducted a preliminary experiment on the temperature traces formed by an underwater submarine's waste discharge. For this purpose, we collected propulsion system and navigation condition data from domestically introduced submarines and developed an experimental system to measure the temperature traces. As a result, we observed that high-temperature bubbles injected into the tank broke down into smaller sizes, and their temperature dropped to levels similar to the surrounding fluid. This observation was confirmed using a thermocouple sensor. Consequently, the thermal imaging system designed to measure the temperature trace of the water's surface did not detect any significant temperature traces.

  • This paper reports an experimental study around a module about forced air flow by blower($35{\times}35{\times}6mm^3$) in portable PC(10mm high, 200mm wide, and 235mm long). The channel inlet flow velocity has been varied between 0.26, 0.52 and 0.78m/s. The power input to the module is 4Wthis report, particular attention is directed to the fluid flow and adiabatic wall temperature($T_(ad)$) around a module which is under fluid mechanical and thermal influences of the module. The fluid flow around a module was visualized using PIV system. Liquid crystal thernography is used to determine the adiabatic wall temperature around a heated module on an acrylic board. Plots of $T_(ad)$ (or F) show marked effects of dispersion of thermal wake near the module.

  • When a flow passes a series of parallel ones, vortexes will be formed in the wake after the cylinder. This paper treats the problems of vibration and noise in tube bank of gas flow duct of heat exchanger thermal suppling boiler in combine cycle thermal power plants. The boiler burner type has recently been changed to low Nox burner and begun commercial operation. After more load up operation then 70%, high level noise and vibration were generated at gas flow duct of heat exchanger.

  • The effect of thermal stratification on the turbulent dispersion from a fine cylindrical heat source was experimentally examined in a wind tunnel with and without a strong temperature gradient. A 0.5 mm dia. nichrome wire was used as a line heat source. Turbulent intensities, r.m.s. value of temperature and convective heat fluxes were measured by using a hot-wire and cold-wire combination probe. The results show that the peack value and the spread of the vertical turbulent intensity for the stratified case are far lower than those in the neutral case, which indicates that the stable temperature gradient suppresses the vertical velocity component. All of the third order moments including heat fluxes measured in the stable condition have very small values than those of the neutral case. This nature suggests that the decrease of scalar fluctuations in the stably stratified flow is mainly due to the suppression ofthe turbulent diffusion processes by the stable stratification. A simple gradient model with a composite timescale which has a simple weighted algebraic mean between dynamic and thermal time scale yields reasonably good numerical values in comparison with the experimental data.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate adiabatic wall temperature and heat transfer coefficient around a module cooled by forced air flow. The flow angle of attack to the module were 0$^{\circ}$and 45$^{\circ}$. In the first method, inlet air flow(1~7m/s) and input power.(3, 5, 7W) were varied after a heated module was placed on an adiabatic floor(320$\times$550$\times$1㎣). An adiabatic wall temperature was determinated to use liquid crystal film. In the second method to determinate heat transfer coefficient, inlet air flow(1~7m/s) and the heat flux of rubber heater(0.031~0.062W/$m^2$) were varied after an adiabatic module was placed on rubber heater covering up an adiabatic floor. Additional information is visualized by an oil-film method of the surface flow on the floor and the module. Plots of $T_{ad}$ and $h_{ad}$ show marked effects of flow development from the module and dispersion of thermal wake near the module. Certain key features of the data set obtained by this investigation may serve as a benchmark for thermal-design codes based on CFD.

  • A Pin-fin array is widely used to enhance the heat transfer in the internal cooling passage. The heat transfer distribution around the pin-fin is varied by the horseshoe vortex and flow separation. The difference of heat transfer coefficient induces the large thermal stress, which is one of the major reasons to break of hot components. So, it is required to enhance the heat transfer on the back side of pin-fin to solve the thermal stress problem. This study suggests the pin-fin with inclined jet hole and complex pin-fin/dimple array to enhance the heat transfer on the back side of pin-fin. The heat transfer coefficient is predicted by the numerical analysis, which is performed by CFX 14.0. The numerical results are obtained at Reynolds number, 10,000. The results show that the heat transfer on the back side of pin-fin is increased in both cases. Beside, the wake, which comes from dimple and jet, helps to develop the horseshoe vortex and increase the heat transfer on the next row pin-fin.

  • Since it is important to understand the bio-climatic change in Seoul for ecological city planning in the future, this paper gives an overview on bio-climate analysis of urban environments at Seoul. We analyzed its characteristics in recent years using the observations of 24 of Automatic Weather Station (AWS) by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). In urbanization, Seoul metropolitan area is densely populated and is concentrated with high buildings. This urban activity changes land covering, which modifies the local circulation of radiation, heat and moisture, precipitation and creating a specific climate. Urban climate is evidently manifested in the phenomena of the increase of the air temperature, called urban heat Island and in addition urban sqall line of heavy rain. Since a city has its different land cover and street structure, these form their own climate character such as climate comfort zone. The thermal fold in urban area such as the heat island is produced by the change of land use and the air pollution that provide the bio-climate change of urban eco-system. The urban wind flow is the most important climate element on dispersion of air pollution, thermal effects and heavy shower. Numerical modeling indicates that the bio-climatic transition of wind wake in urban area and the dispersion of the air pollution by the simulations of the wind variation depend on the urban land cover change. The winds are separately simulated on small and micro-scale at Seoul with two kinds of kinetic model, Witrak and MUKLIMO.

  • Three dimensional flow fields around passenger car body was computed by PAM-FLOW, well-known and validated computer program for thermal and fluid analysis. Regarding the computational method, a Navier-Stokes solver based on finite element method with various turbulent models and adaptive grid technique (H-refinement)was adopted. The results were physically reasonable and compared with experimental data, giving good agreement. It was found that three dimensional flow simulation with H-refinement technique had potential for prediction of low fie이 around vehicle and the ability to predict vortex in the wake, which is vital for CFD to be used for automobile aerodynamic calculation.
