In this paper, we investigate the capacity of the lock-in infrared thermography technique for the evaluation of non-uniform top layers of a silicon carbide coating with a nickel based superalloy sample. The method utilized a multilayer heat transfer model to analyze the surface temperature response. The modelling of the sample was done in ANSYS. The sample consists of three layers, namely, the metal substrate, bond coat and top coat. A sinusoidal heating at different excitation frequencies was imposed upon the top layer of the sample according to the experimental procedures. The thermal response of the excited surface was recorded, and the phase angle image was computed by Fourier transform using the image processing software, MATLAB and Thermofit Pro. The correlation between the coating thickness and phase angle was established for each excitation frequency. The most appropriate excitation frequency was found to be 0.05 Hz. The method demonstrated potential in the evaluation of coating thickness and it was successfully applied to measure the non-uniform top layers ranging from 0.05 mm to 1 mm with an accuracy of 0.000002 mm to 0.045 mm.
Recently, It has increased the importance of building energy saving. Pipe insulation as well as building envelope insulation is to improve energy efficiency and reduce the energy loss. However, there continues to use the old standard for pipe insulation that is one of the most important elements in energy savings in buildings. The purpose of this study is to propose suitable pipe insulation thickness for reducing building energy use. The study also reviews pipe insulation thickness standard in accordance to Korea standard, ASHRAE 90.1 and BS5422 and analyzed through thermal simulation. As a result, it is necessary to apply the performance design method of the pipe insulation thickness to reduce the energy loss of the piping.

Organic light emitting layer in OLED device was formed by gravure printing process in this work. Organic surface coated by gravure printing typically showed relatively bad uniformity. Thickness and roughness control was characterized by applying various mixed solvents in this work. Poly (N-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) and fact-tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium($Ir(ppy)_3$) are host dopant system materials. PVK was used as a host and Ir(ppy)3 as green-emitting dopant. To luminance efficiency of the plasma treatment on etched ITO glass and then PEDOT:PSS spin coated. The device layer structure of OLED devices is as follow Glass/ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK+Ir(ppy)3-Active layer /LiF/Al. It was printed by gravure printing technology for polymer light emitting diode (PLED). To control the thickness multi-printing technique was applied. As the number of the printing was increased the thickness enhancement was increased. To control the roughness of organic layer film, thermal annealing process was applied. The annealing temperature was varied from room temperature, $40^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$, to $120^{\circ}C$.

In this work, Ni thin films with different thickness from $1,523{\AA}\;to\;9,827{\AA}$ were deposited for the application of micro thermal flow sensors by a magnetron sputtering and oxidized through annealing at $450^{\circ}C$ with increasing annealing time. The initial variation of resistivity decreased radically with increasing films thickness, then gradually stabilizes as the thickness increases. The resistivity of Ni thin films with $3,075{\AA}$ increased suddenly with increasing annealing time at $450{\circ}C$, then gradually stabilizes as the thickness increases after the annealing time 9 h. In case of $3,075{\AA}\;and\;9,827{\AA}$ films, the average of TCR values, measured for the operating temperature range of $0^{\circ}C\;to\;180^{\circ}C$, were $2,413.1ppm/^{\circ}C\;and\;4,438.5ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively. Because of their high resistivity and very linear TCR, Ni oxide thin films are superior to pure Ni and Pt thin films for flow and temperature sensor applications.
We conducted a study by computational simulation about the effects of frost thickness on the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics as whole heat exchanger configuration changes. In order to perform the analysis for validation, we assumed that frost properties have constant values and the frost layers that are formed on the fin and tube surfaces are uniform. In order to find the constant thermal conductivity of frost layer, a variety of frost thermal conductivities are performed in our work and compared with the results by Lee et al. [4] and Yang et al. [5] proposed many experimental data about the 2-rows and 2-columns finned tube heat exchanger. The numerical results agreed well with the experimental data when frost conductivity is 0.07W/mK. After the validation had performed, we applied this procedure to the finned tube heat exchanger of domestic refrigeration and investigated the thermo-hydraulic characteristic of the heat exchanger affected by frost thickness according to the inlet velocities and temperatures of air considering the configuration change such as fin pitch.
This paper investigates creep analysis of a plate made of Al-SiC functionally graded material using Mendelson's method of successive elastic solution. All mechanical and thermal material properties, except Poisson's ratio, are assumed to be variable along the thickness direction based on the volume fraction of reinforcement and thickness. First, the basic relations of the plate are derived using the Love-Kirchhoff plate theory. The solution of governing equations yields an elastic solution to start creep analysis. The creep behavior is demonstrated through Norton's equation based on Pandey's experimental results extracted for Al-SiC functionally graded material. A linear variation is assumed for temperature distribution along the thickness direction. The creep strain, as well as the thermal strain, are included in the governing equations derived from classical plate theory for mechanical strain. A successive elastic solution based on Mendelson's method is employed to derive the history of stresses, strains, and displacements over a long time. History of stresses and deformations are obtained over a long time to predict damage to the plate because of various loadings, and material composition along the thickness and planar directions.

This research investigates the thermoelastic transient behavior of a thermally loaded slab made of a thermal diode-like material which has two directional thermal conductivity values (low and high). Finite difference analysis is used to obtain the elastic response of the slab based on the temperature solutions. It is found that the rate of heat transfer through the thickness of the slab decreases with reducing the ratio between the low and high thermal conductivity values (R). In addition, reducing R makes the slab less responsive to the thermal load when heated from the direction associated with the low thermal conductivity value.
Conductive and radiative thermal model configurations of an imager of a geostationary satellite are presented. A two-plane method is introduced for three dimensional conductive coupling which is not able to be treated by thin shell plate thermal modeling technique. Especially the two-plane method is applied to massive matters and PIP(Payload Interface Plate) in the imager model. Some massive matters in the thermal model are modified by adequate correction factors or equivalent thickness in order to obtain the numerical results of thermal modeling to be consistent with the analytic model. More detailed nodal breakdown is specially employed to the object which has the rapid temperature gradient expected by a rule of thumb. This detailed thermal model of the imager is supposed to be used for detailed analyses and test predictions, and be correlated with the thermal vacuum test results before final in-flight predictions.
Metal surface temperatures around the combustion chamber in a gasoline engine directly affect thermal durability and performance of the engine. Metal surface temperatures are influenced by many cooling factors such as drilled water passage, deflector, combustion chamber wall thickness, pillar, and coolant flow pattern. The object of this study is to learn how the coolant passages and coolant flow pattern in an engine influence to the engine metal surface temperature at engine full load and speed. From the test result, it is suggested a plan to reinforce the engine stiffness and to reduce the thermal stress simultaneously. Also, approaches are introduced to reduce the thermal load on the engine by adjusting the discharging direction from the water pump and by optimizing the water transfer holes in the cylinder head gasket. These methods and the optimized engine cooling system, which were suggested in this paper, were adapted for an engine in progress to eliminate the exhaust valve seat wear.
Powder compaction technology is widely used to prepare thermal battery components. This method, however, is limited by the size, thickness, and geometry of the battery components. This limitation leads to excessive cell capacity, overweight, and higher cost of the pellets, which decreases the specific capacities and delays the activation time of thermal batteries. $FeS_2$ thin-film cathodes were fabricated by tape-casting technology and analyzed by SEM and EDS in this paper. The residual organic binder of the $FeS_2$ thin-film cathodes decreased with the temperature of the heat treatment, which improved the specific capacity because of the lower resistance. Specific capacities of the $FeS_2$ thin-film cathodes decreased because of the higher residual binder and the restrictive reaction of active materials with molten salts as the thickness increased. $FeS_2$ thin-film cathodes showed much higher specific capacity (1,212.2 As/g) than pellet cathodes (860.7 As/g) at the optimal heat-treatment temperature ($230^{\circ}C$).
