This paper is devoted to illustrate some numerical procedures to solve the boundary equilibrium problems of three-dimensional solids that are subjected to thermal strains. The constitutive equations take into account the bounded tensile strength of the material and they are presented in the framework of non-linear elasticity and small strains. The associated equilibrium problem is solved numerically by means of the finite element method and the numerical techniques, i.e. the Newton-Raphson method and the secant method, are revised in order to assure the solution convergence of the discretized problem. Some numerical examples are illustrated.
A half-scaled large test model for the main components of the real annular structure was built and the thermal behaviors were experimented and obtained by thermal cyclic loads. The model design and the test conditions for the thermal loads were determined to take into consideration the thermal and mechanical loads acting on the real annular structure by finite element analyses. Temperature profiles and strains of the main components of the model were measured at an early stage of the test and periodically throughout the test in the given test conditions. After completion of the thermal cyclic tests, no evidence of crack initiation and propagation were identified by a dye penetration test. The measured strains at the critical parts were slightly increased proportionally with the increase in the number of the thermal cycles.
The purpose of this paper is to study on the morphological and physiological nature generally observed for the identifications, and the four strains of thermal resistanting aerobic bacteria isolated from swelled cans and the different soils collected from the wide area in Korea. The results obtained in the light of the Bergey's Manual for the identification of the bacteria, have been shown that the four strains of bacteria are pertained to Bacillus subtilis. The optimum temperature, pH and the thermal resistance (2.5 min. at $121^{\circ}C$) of the bacteria have been measured.
This study was focused on the measurement of thermal expansion coefficients for GRP pipe through strain gage circuits. First of all, thermal expansion coefficients of aluminum beam were measured to examine the validity of the suggested method by using various types of strain gage circuits. Thermal expansion coefficients of GRP pipes along axial and hoop directions were measured to investigate the effect of the location of strain gages, number of repeated measurements, and strain gage types with different thermal expansion coefficients on the thermal strains and the repeatability of measured results. According to the results, thermal expansion coefficients of GRP pipes along hoop direction were lower than those along axial direction due to the constraint effect of reinforced glass fibers on thermal strains along hoop direction. As measurements were repeated, thermal expansion coefficients of GRP pipes were slightly increased, but the degree of increase became smaller. Finally, the same thermal expansion coefficients were obtained irrespective of different types of strain gages with different thermal expansion coefficients if thermal strains of strain gages were compensated by using reference compensation specimen.
The purpose of this paper is to study on the thermal death time curve and F-values, and morphological and physiological characteristics observed for the identification. The three strains of thermal resistancing anaerobic bacteria isolated from unheated various cans and swelled cans and the different soils collected from the wide area in Korea. The results obtained in the light of the manual of Bergeg's for the identification of the anareobic bacteria have been shown that the three strains of anaerobic bacteria are pertained to Cl. sporogenes B-41 Cl. butyricum B-72 & Cl.. botulinum Type E B-163. The optimum temperature, pH and thermal resistance, thermal death point of the anaerobic have been measured.
Since the fiber reinforced polymeric (FRP) composites are considered in next generation of space transportation systems, reliable thermal expansion properties should be well provided for structural design of composite materials. To obtain accurate mechanical behaviors at a cryogenic temperature, precise strain measurement and calibration must be provided. In this work, apparent strains (or thermal output) of temperature self-compensated strain gages were deliberately investigated for epoxy, CTBN modified epoxy and carbon fabric composite system from room temperature to liquid nitrogen temperature. Also, fourth-order thermal output curves were presented for the further calibration. The results showed that the thermal output is heavily dependent on test materials and a large amount of apparent strains were observed for the polymer resins.

The problems of thermal stress and residual stress in resistance spot welding are studied from two standpoint namely, effect of temperature distributions and effect of the radius of free boundary. The radius of the region where the temperature distributions are occured is taken as a function of time after welding and as a finite size, 6 times of heated zone. The region of the radial stress distribution is treated as a function of time under Saint-Venant's principle and 6 or 12 times of originally heated zone. Thermal stresses and strains are obtained by analytic solution under constant mechanical properties and by the finite difference method for varing properties under temperature variation. From the computed results following conclusions are derived (1) For the engineering purpose, the region of temperature distribution and stress distribution can be treated as a finite region, $R=r_o=6r_e$ (2) If the maximum temperature of the aluminum alloy plate is less than $500^{\circ}F$, thermal stresses and strains can be obtained with constant mechanical properties. (3) The residual stresses and strains will be remained in welds and its vicinity.
In autobody assembly, thin-wall, tubular connections have been used for the frame structure. Recent interest in light materials, such as aluminum or magnesium alloys, has been rapidly growing for weight reduction and fuel efficiency. Due to higher thermal expansion coefficient, low stiffness/strength, and low softening temperature of aluminum and magnesium alloys, control of welding-induced distortion in these connections becomes a critical issue. In this study, the material sensitivity to welding distortion was investigated using a T-tubular connection of three types materials; low carbon steel (A500 Gr. A), aluminum alloy (5456-H116) and magnesium alloy (AZ91C-T6). An uncoupled thermal and mechanical finite element analysis scheme using the ABAQUS software program was developed to model and simulate the welding process, welding procedure and material behaviors. The predicted angular distortions were correlated to the cumulative plastic strains. A unique relationship between distortion and plastic strains exists for all three materials studied. The amount of distortion is proportional to the magnitude and distribution of the cumulative plastic strains in the weldment. The magnesium alloy has the highest distortion sensitivity, followed by the other two materials with the steel connection having the least distortion. Results from studies of thin-aluminum plates show that welding distortion can be minimized by reducing the cumulative plastic strains by preventing heat diffusion into the base metal using a strong heat sink placed directly beneath the weld. A rapid cooling method is recommended to reduce welding distortion of magnesium tubular connections.
Torsional behavior of concrete pavement slabs due to temperature and moisture effects is constrained by self weight and friction etc, and causes stress as the result. The stress due to humidity variation in the slab is difficult to calculate while that due to temperature variation can easily be calculated by a commercial structural analysis program. Thus, the slab behavior can be predicted more accurately if the humidity effect is converted to equivalent temperature and is used as an input of structural analysis. In this study, a concrete pavement slab was constructed and strains of the slab due to environmental loadings were measured for long-term period. Thermal strains were subtracted from the measured strains by using thermal expansion coefficient of the concrete measured in a laboratory. Shrinkage strains, the remained strains, was supposed as additional thermal strains to calculate imaginary temperature with equivalent effect of the shrinkage by dividing the shrinkage with the thermal expansion coefficient. An existing shrinkage model was modified by considering the self weight and friction to be used in another model which can convert differential shrinkage between top and bottom of the slab to equivalent temperature difference. Addition research efforts on tensile stress reduction according to steady increase in the compressive strains are warranted for more accurate stress calculation.
For the rational and economic design of the structural elements of ships which is built using welding, the ultimate strength analyses of the plates having initial imperfections, such as welding residual stresses and strains, are needful. The welding deformation usually relied on approximative equations or based on expert's experience. But in this paper, for the thermal elasto-plastic analysis of plates, the finite element analysis was performed, based on initial strain method. In formulating the incremental analysis, unbalanced force terns were included. In the plastic domain during the incremental process, the 2nd order terns stress increment and yield stress increment were considered, so that time increment could be controlled for a more stable solution. The ultimate strength analysis program of the plates having initial imperfections was made. The ultimate strength analysis was carried out based on the results of the welding deformations of this paper. In the ultimate strength analysis the Rayleigh-Ritz method based on the minimum potential theory was used.
