  • In this study, to improve the thermal stabilities of the epoxy composite specimens in addition to the enhanced mechanical properties, those were reinforced with carbon nanotubes and micrometer-sized silica particles. To disperse the filler in matrix relatively simple physical process, specimens were fabricated using shear mixing and sonication. Tensile strength, coefficients of thermal expansion and thermal conductivity of the specimens were measured with varied contents of the two fillers. The mechanical and thermal properties were also discussed, and the experimental results of thermal expansion related to the thermal stability of the specimens were compared with those from several micromechanics models. The hybrid composites specimens incorporating 0.6 wt% of carbon nanotubes and 50 wt% of silica particles showed better mechanical properties than the others with increase in tensile strength up to 11%, with respect to those of the baseline specimens. As the silica contents were increased the thermal expansion was reduced down to 36%, and the thermal stability was improved with the decreased thermal deformation. Thermal conductivity of the epoxy composite specimens incorporating 50 wt% of silica particles was enhanced, which demonstrate improvement of 72%. The mechanical and thermal properties of the hybrid composites specimens incorporating the two fillers were improved simultaneously.

  • The hydroxy terminated aliphatic hyperbranched polyesters having different generations were synthesized by using melt polycondensation procedure. Then, the terminal groups of hyperbranched polyesters were modified by using acryloyl chloride and characterized by $\^{1}H$-NMR and GPC techniques. As a result of the modification of terminal groups for hyperbranched polyesters, the phase of the polymers were changed from sticky solid to high viscous liquid indicating that the glass transition temperatures of modified hyperbranched polyesters were lower than the original one. The thermal stabilities of hydroxy terminated hyperbranched polyesters were higher than those of terminal group-modified polymers.

  • The dynamic stability of a functionally graded polymer microbeam reinforced by graphene oxides subjected to a periodic axial force is investigated. The microbeam is assumed to rest on an elastic substrate and is subjected to various immovable boundary restraints. The weight fraction of graphene oxides nanofillers is graded across the beam thickness. The effective Young's modulus of the functionally graded graphene oxides reinforced composite (FG-GORC) was determined using modified Halpin-Tsai model, with the mixture rule used to evaluate the effective Poisson's ratio and the mass density. An improved third order shear deformation theory (TSDT) is used in conjunction with the Chebyshev polynomial-based Ritz method to derive the Mathieu-Hill equations for dynamic stability of the FG-GORC microbeam, in which the scale effect is taken into account based on modified couple stress theory. Then, the Mathieu-Hill equation was solved using Bolotin's method to predict the principle unstable regions of the FG-GORC microbeams. The numerical results show the effects of the small scale, the graphene oxides nanofillers as well as the elastic substrate on the dynamic stability behaviors of the FG-GORC microbeams.

  • The di-functional epoxy resins, i.e., diglycidylether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) and diglycidylethere of bisphenol F(DGEBF) were initiated by cationic catalyst, i.e., benzylquinoxalinium hexafluoroantimonate(BQH) using electron-beam(EB) technique. And the effect of structure of DGEBA and DGEBF on thermal stabilities and cure behaviors was investigated. According to the experimental results, the decomposed activation energy based on Horowitz-Metzger method was higher in the case of DGEBA, but intergral procedural decomposition temperature(IPDT) of DGEBA was lower than DGEBF. This could be interpreted in terms of high crosslink density resulted from hydroxyl bond of DGEBF backbone. It was confirmed in increasing the hydroxyl band at $7000\;cm^{-1}$ and $5235\;cm^{-1}$ using near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS).

  • Nafion/Pt/Polypyrrole composite membranes were fabricated by chemical in-situ polymerization of pyrrole monomers with Pt precursors in Nafion matrix for DMFC. We demonstrated that positively charged pyrrolinum groups of polypyrrole particles were co-interacted with sulfonic groups of Nafion as verified by FT-IR results. Mutual interaction between $Nafion-SO_3^-$ (or negatively charged Pt precursors) and Polypyrrole$-NH_2^+$ influenced the physical properties of pristine Nafion. Thermal property proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and cell performance of pristine and modified Nafion were analyzed for an application of DMFC membrane. Thermal stabilities of sulfonic groups and side chains in Nafion/Pt/polypyrrole composite membranes were higher than those of Nafion due to mutual interaction between sulfonic groups of Nafion and pyrrolinum groups of polypyrrole. Methanol permeabilities of Nafion/Pt/Polypyrrole composite were reduced more proton conductivities with the increase in the content of Pt particles. As a result of that, the enhancement of cell performance by Nafion/Pt/Polypyrole O2 relative to Nafion was more pronounced under the specific experimental condition such as high temperature and more concentrated methanol solution.

  • New poly(arylene ether)s (PAEs) with both transparency and heat-resistance were prepared by a polycondensation of FBPODS, an ordered-sequence aromatic dihalide, and cardo typed aromatic diols containing fluorene and/or adamantane moiety and also non-cardo typed 1,5-naphthalene diol. The resulting polymers had their glass transition temperatures ranged from 202 to $247^{\circ}C$. Based on TGA data, they exhibited excellent thermal stabilities, showing 5% weight loss at $434-487^{\circ}C$. They had low thermal expansion coefficients of 58-59 ppm at temperature range of $50-200^{\circ}C$ as well as good mechanical properties with moduli of 1757-2143 MPa. The optical transmittance for the PAE films was over 70% at 550 nm, except for the PAE that contains naphthalene moiety (30% at 550 nm). They also showed water uptake of about 0.68% regardless of their chemical compositions. Therefore, the newly developed PAEs show strong potential as plastic substrates for flexible devices for display, solar cell and e-paper.

  • In this paper, the electrical properties of PVD Ta and $TaN_x$ gate electrodes on $SiO_2$ and their thermal stabilities are investigated. The results show that the work functions of $TaN_x$ gate electrode are modified by the amount of N, which is controlled by the flow rate of $N_2$during reactive sputtering process. The thermal stability of Ta and $TaN_x$ with RTO-grown $SiO_2$ gate dielectrics is examined by changes in equivalent oxide thickness (EOT), flat-band voltage ($V_{FB}$), and leakage current after post-metallization anneal at high temperature in $N_2$ambient. For a Ta gate electrode, the observed decrease in EOT and leakage current is due to the formation of a Ta-incorporated high-K layer during the high temperature annealing. Less change in EOT and leakage current is observed for $TaN_x$ gate electrode. It is also shown that the frequency dispersion and hysteresis of high frequency CV curves are improved significantly by a post-metallization anneal.

  • Two biopolymers, silk fibroin (SF) and chitosan, were conjugated by tyrosinase (EC 1.14.18.1), a polyphenolic oxidase, to improve their physicochemical properties, such as their thermal properties and morphological stabilities in organic solvents. The crosslinking between SF and chitosan took place mainly through Michael addition reactions. A main reaction between the amino groups in chitosan and o-quinone, the oxidation product of the tyrosyl residue in SF, was confirmed by UV spectroscopy. Measurements of viscosity and light scattering indicated that the crosslinked SF/chitosan conjugate was compact: it had a smaller particle size because of tight bonding forces between the SF and chitosan molecular chains. Thermal decomposition of SF/chitosan conjugates crosslinked by tyrosinase occurred at higher temperatures. The adhesiveness of the SF/chitosan conjugates decreased steadily as the crosslinking reaction progressed. We propose that this new crosslinking method be used for the preparation of silk fibroin/chitosan conjugates using tyrosinase. We expect that SF/chitosan conjugates crosslinked by tyrosinase can be used preferentially in biomedical applications because of its unique properties and non-toxicity.

  • Conjugated polymers have attracted much scientific and technological research interest during the past few decades because of their potential use such as polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs).1,2 Particularly, lots of phenylene-based polymers such as polyfluorene and its derivatives have been synthesized because of their high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies and thermal stabilities. However, troublesome long wavelength emission in polymer film of polyfluorenes on heating during device formation or operation has been the crucial problem for practical applications. The source of the long wavelength emission was initially believed to be solely due to excimer emission as a result of polymer aggregation. It has also recently been correlated with emissions from ketonic defects in the fluorene units. Many efforts have been made to reduce the tendency to red-shifted emission. Here, we report for the first time the design and synthesis of novel 9,9-spiro bifluornene-based polymers containing heteroatoms such as N, S in its molecular skeleton. Especially, the 9,9-spiro bifluornene-based polymers containing N atom showed stable blue electroluminescence, which did not show spectral change upon thermal annealing.

  • In this study, the effect of characteristics of colloidal silica, which was used as an additive in the compression/coating catalyst process, on activities and thermal stabilities of the catalysts was investigated. The shape, size, specific surface area and porosity, and composition of four different types of colloidal silica materials were analyzed, and the NOx conversion of V2O5/TiO2 catalyst prepared by these colloidal silica were studied. Properties of the catalysts prepared by colloidal silica depend on the nature of the colloidal silica used, in particular the alkaline substances such as Na in the silica were evaluated to be directly effect on the deNOx conversion of the catalyst. In addition, higher silica contents in the colloidal silica were found to improve the deNOx activity and thermal stability of the catalyst.
