  • The numerical analysis of ablative thermal protection systems (TPS) for solid rockets has been carried out with various in-house codes since the 1960s. However, the application scope of commercial codes has been expanded by adding subroutines and user-defined functions (UDF) to codes such as Fluent, Marc, and ABAQUS. In the past, the flow, thermal response and structural analysis of TPS have been performed using separate approaches. Recently, research has been conducted to interrelate them. In this paper, the thermal response characteristics of thermal protection materials, the in-house codes for thermal response analysis, and the research trends of flow-thermal-structure analysis of TPS using commercial codes were reviewed.

  • In this paper, thermal response analysis of a temperature controlled three-axis accelerometer for high temperature environments with integrated micro-heaters and temperature sensors is investigated with finite element method (FEM) program, ANSYS and infrared thermal measurement systems. And availability to application fields from a viewpoint about short thermal response time is discussed. In this paper, the time of three-axis accelerometer for high temperatures becoming $300^{\circ}C$ by integrated micro-heaters and temperature sensors to reduce thermal drift characteristics was analyzed as a thermal response time of this device. The simulated thermal response time (time until SOI piezoresistors actually becomes $300^{\circ}C$) of three-axis accelerometer for high temperatures with ANSYS is about 0.6s, and measured result with infrared temperature measurement systems is about 0.64s. Experimental results using infrared thermal measurement systems agreed well with these theoretical results.

  • A detailed satellite panel thermal model composed of more than thousands nodes can not be directly integrated into a spacecraft thermal model due to its node size and the limitation of commercial satellite thermal analysis programs. For the integration of the panel into the satellite thermal model, a reduced thermal model having proper accuracy is required. A thermal model reduction method was developed and validated by using a geostationary satellite panel. The temperature differences of main components between the detailed and the reduced thermal model were less than $1^{\circ}C$ in steady state analysis. Also, the dynamic responses of the detailed and the reduced thermal model show very similar trends. Thus, the developed reduction method can be applicable to actual satellite thermal design and analysis with resonable accuracy and convenience.

  • Environmental chamber (EC) is an experimental facility used to analyze the characteristics of thermal response of testing objects by the artificial control of weather conditions. The EC in KIER can simulate the weather conditions by the control of temperature, humidity, and solar radiation. A two-storied testing building is located inside of EC. For the exact thermal response analysis of testing building, monthly or yearly scheduled operations are necessary. Although this long term operation gives the exact experimental data, it requires a high operational cost, long duration, and lots of manpower. Therefore it is necessary to perform the shortened experiments without sacrificing the validity of the obtained results. Since the characteristics of thermal response from the shortened experiments are different from the full time results, the analytical method to analyze the thermal response from the shortened experiments to estimate a full times results is developed in this study. The thermal response of testing building is performed using commercial software TRNSYS.

  • A statistical procedure, which uses response surface method and Monte Carlo simulation technique, is proposed for analyzing the thermal margin of light water reactor core. The statistical thermal margin analysis method performs the best.estimate thermal margin evaluation by the probabilistic treatment of uncertainties of input parameters. This methodology is applied to KNU-1 core thermal margin analysis under the steady state nominal operating condition. Also discussed are the comparisons with conventional deterministic method and Improved Thermal Design Procedure of Westinghouse. It is deduced from this study that the response surface method is useful for performing the statistical thermal margin analysis and that thermal margin improvement is assured through this procedure.

  • Several numerical or analytical models have been proposed to analyze the thermal response of vertical ground heat exchangers (GHEX). However, most models are valid only after several hours of operation since they neglect the heat capacity of the borehole. Recently, the short time response of the GHEX became important in system simulation to improve efficiency. In this paper, a simple new method to evaluate the short time response of the GHEX by using an analogy model of electric circuit transient analysis was presented. The new transient heat exchanger model adopting the concept of thermal capacitance of the borehole as well as the steady-state thermal resistance showed the transient thermal resistance of the borehole. The model was validated by in-situ thermal response test and then compared with the DST model of the TRNSYS program.

  • This research investigates the thermoelastic transient behavior of a thermally loaded slab made of a thermal diode-like material which has two directional thermal conductivity values (low and high). Finite difference analysis is used to obtain the elastic response of the slab based on the temperature solutions. It is found that the rate of heat transfer through the thickness of the slab decreases with reducing the ratio between the low and high thermal conductivity values (R). In addition, reducing R makes the slab less responsive to the thermal load when heated from the direction associated with the low thermal conductivity value.

  • A numerical study is performed to predict the effect of operating conditions on the thermal response of electronic assemblies during infrared reflow soldering. The multimode heat transfer within the reflow oven as well as within the electronic assembly is simulated, and the predictions illustrate the detailed thermal responses. Parametric study is performed to determine the thermal response of electronic assemblies to various conditions such as conveyor speed, exhaust velocity, and component emissivity. The predictions of the detailed electronic assembly thermal response can be used in selecting the oven operating conditions to ensure proper soldering and minimization of thermally-induced electronic assembly stresses.

  • Thermomechanical analysis is conducted on the radioactive repository in deep rock mass considering the in-situ stress, excavation and thermal loading of a radioactive waste. Thermomechanical properties of a discontinuous rock mass are estimated by a theoretical method so called sequential analysis. Using the estimated properties as input for finite element analysis, the influence on temperature distribution and thermal stress is analyzed within the scope of 2-dimensional steady state and transient heat transfer and coupled thermal elastic plastic behaviour. Granitic rock mass is taken for this analysis. The analysis is done for two different rock mass conditions, i.e. continuous-homogeneous and highly jointed conditions, for the purpose of comparison. In the case of steady state, the extent of disturbed zone around the storage tunnel due to the heat production of the spent-fuel canister varies depending on the thermomechanical properties of the rock mass. In the case of transient analyses, the response of the jointed rock mass to the thermal loading after radioactive waste disposal varies significantly with time, resulting in dramatic changes in the both size and location of disturbed zone.
