  • The purpose of this study is to assess the condition of composites used in aircraft under varying temperature environment with ultrasound guided wave technique. Investigation of crucial influential factor on the composite health monitoring related to aircraft operational environments such as the number of thermal cycles and temperature deviation between ground level and flight altitude has been of a great concern for aircraft safety issue. In this study, ultrasonic guided wave health monitoring scheme is proposed to evaluate composite specimens damaged with the thermal fatigue simulating aircraft operational condition. Guided wave dispersion curves are used to select right modes which show a promising sensitivity to each different thermal fatigue damage level. The present approach can be also implemented as one of on-lines health monitoring tools for aircraft.

  • This paper presents theoretical and experimental evaluation of the structural health monitoring (SHM) capability of piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) at elevated temperatures. This is important because the technologies for structural sensing and monitoring need to account for the thermal effect and compensate for it. Permanently installed PWAS transducers have been One of the extensively employed sensor technologies for in-situ continuous SHM. In this paper, the electro-mechanical impedance spectroscopy (EMIS) method has been utilized as a dynamic descriptor of PWAS behavior and as a high frequency standing wave local modal technique. Another SHM technology utilizes PWAS as far-field transient transducers to excite and detect guided waves propagating through the structure. This paper first presents how the EMIS method is used to qualify and quantify circular PWAS resonators in an increasing temperature environment up to 230 deg C. The piezoelectric material degradation with temperature was investigated and trends of variation with temperature were deduced from experimental measurements. These effects were introduced in a wave propagation simulation software called Wave Form Revealer (WFR). The thermal effects on the substrate material were also considered. Thus, the changes in the propagating guided wave signal at various temperatures could be simulated. The paper ends with summary and conclusions followed by suggestions for further work.

  • High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a noninvasive surgical method mainly targeting deeply located cancer tissue. Ultrasound is generated from an extemally located transducer and the beam is focused at the target volume, so that selective damage can be achieved without harm to overlying or surrounding tissues. The mechanism for cell killing can be combination of thermal and cavitational damage. Although cavitation can be an effective means of tissue destruction, the possibility of massive hemorrhage and the unpredictable nature of cavitational events prevent clinical application of cavitation. Hence, thermal damage has been a main focus related to HIFU research. 2D phased array transducer systems allow electronic scanning of focus, multi-foci, and anti-focus with multi-foci, so that HIFU becomes more applicable in clinical use. Currently, lack of noninvasive monitoring means of HIFU is the main factor to limit clinical applications, but development in MRI and Ultrasound Imaging techniques may be able to provide solutions to overcome this problem. With the development of advanced focusing algorithm and monitoring means, complete noninvasive surgery is expected to be implemented in the near future.

  • With the increased use of lasers in industrial welding applications, techniques for monitoring and controlling these processes become increasingly important. It is very important that we understand the dynamic behaviors of the laser induced Plume in welding, because the laser induced plume has considerable effects on welding efficiency and the quality of materials. As the plume fluctuation was associated with keyhole instability, unstable vapor plume indicated the process was unstable and would result in poor welds. An Infrared Thermal-vision Camera can be utilized compensate for incurracies encountered in real-time monitoring during laser welding. We have results that instabilities of plume are closely related with hot cracking and defect of laser welding.

  • The flame image processing and analysis system has been investigated for the optimal pulverized coal firing of thermal power plant, especially for lower nitrogen oxide generation and more safe operation. We aimed at gaining the relationship between burner flame image information and emissions of nitrogen oxide and unburned carbon in furnace utilizing the flame image processing methods, by which we quantitatively determine the condition of combustion on the individual humors. Its feasibility test was undertaken with a pilot furnace for coal firing, through which the system was observed to be effective for the monitoring of the combustion condition of pulverized coal firing boilers.

  • In this work, a PC-based thermal performance monitoring system is developed for the nuclear power plants. The system performs real-time thermal performance monitoring and diagnosis during plant operation. Specifically, a prototype for the KORI-2 nuclear power unit is developed and examined in this work. The analysis and the fault identification of the thermal cycle of a nuclear power plant is very difficult because the system structure is highly complex and the components are very much inter-related. In this study, some major diagnostic performance parameters are selected in order to represent the thermal cycle effectively and to reduce the computing time. The Fuzzy ARTMAP, a self-organizing neural network, is used to recognize the characteristic pattern change of the performance parameters in abnormal situation. By examination, this algorithm is shown to be able to detect abnormality and to identify the fault component or the change of system operation condition successfully. For the convenience of operators, a graphical user interface is also constructed in this work.

  • G8 summit meeting held in July 2008 decided to set up a long-term goal, by 2050, reducing the world greenhouse emissions by half of those emitted in 1990. In November 2009, the Government announced to reduce the national $CO_2$ emission by 30[%] of BAU by 2020. Electric power industries in Korea produce most of their electricity by burning fossil fuels, and emit approximately 28[%] of national $CO_2$ emissions. Monitoring the $CO_2$ emissions. Monitoring the $CO_2$ emission of electric power plants is very important. This paper presents a method to calculate the hourly $CO_2$ emission for a thermal power plant burning mixture of coal and oil using the performance test data and coal-oil mix rate. An example of $CO_2$ emission calculation is also demonstrated.

  • In laser surface hardening processes, the geometrical parameters such as the depth and the width of a hardened layer can be utilized to assess the hardened layer quality. However, accurate monitoring of the geometrical parameters for on-line process control as well as for on-line quality evaluation is very difficult because the hardened layer is formed beneath a material surface and is not visible. Therefore, temperature monitoring of a point of specimen surface has most frequently been used as a process monitoring method. But, a hardened layer depends on the temperature distribution and the thermal history of a specimen during laser surface hardening processing. So, this paper describes the estimation results of the geometric parameters using multi-point surface temperature monitoring. A series of hardening experiments were performed to find the relationships between the geometric parameters and the measured temperature. Estimation results using a neural network show the enhanced effectiveness of multi-point surface temperature monitoring compared to one-point monitoring.

  • A thermal imaging system is implemented for the measurement and the analysis of the thermal distribution of the target objects. The main part of the system is a thermal camera in which a focal plane array typed sensor is introduced. The sensor detects the mid-range infrared spectrum of target objects and then it outputs a generic video signal which should be processed to form a frame thermal image. Here, a digital signal processor(DSP) is applied for the high speed processing of the sensor signals. The DSP controls analog-to-digital converter, performs correction algorithms and outputs the frame thermal data to frame buffers. With the frame buffers can be generated a NTSC signal and transferred the frame data to personal computer(PC) for the analysis and a monitoring of the thermal scenes. By performing the signal processing functions in the DSP the overall system achieves a simple configuration. Several experimental results indicate the performance of the overall system.

  • Recently, thermography camera have been using for body-temperature monitoring. We report on fabrication of prototype thermography camera using the chalcogenide-glass lens and the camera test by analysis of thermal image. In this work, it was found out that thermography camera discerned body-temperature between 20 and $50^{\circ}C$ with noise equivalent temperature difference(NETD) of 87.7mK. It is confirmed that thermography camera using the chalcogenide-glass lens is applicable to the body-temperature monitoring system.
