  • Thermal shock stress intensity factor for an edge-cracked plate subjected to thermal shock is obtained from Bueckner's weight function method. It is shown that thermal shock stress intensity factor has maximum values with variation of time and crack length and that there is most dangerous crack length. By comparing thermal shock stress intensity factor with fracture toughness, the fracture time and critical temperature difference due to thermal shock are determined theoretically. Under constant thermal shock temperature difference, and increase of crack length is shown to increase fracture time. The theoretical fracture time is compared with experimental value measured by acoustic emission method with soda lime glass.

  • To investigate the moderator coolability for CANDU-6 reactors, a test facility (HU-KINS) has been manufactured as a 1/8 scaled-down of a calandria tank. In the design of the test facility, a scaling law was developed in such a way to consider the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of a CANDU-6 moderator. The proposed scaling law takes into consideration of the energy conservation, the dynamic similitude such as dimensionless numbers, Archimedes number (Ar) and Reynolds number (Re), and thermal-hydraulic properties similitude. Using this proposed scaling law, the thermal-hydraulic scaling analyses of similar test facilities such as the SPEL (1/10 scale) and the STERN (1/4 scale), have been identified. As a result, in the case of the SPEL, while the energy conservation is well defined, the similarities of Ar and the heat density are not well considered. As for the similarity of the STERN, while both the energy conservation and the characteristics of Ar are well defined, the heat density is not. In the meanwhile, the HU-KINS test facility with 1/8 length scaled-down is well similitude in compliance with all similarities of the energy conservation, the fluid dynamics and thermal-hydraulic properties. To verify the adequacy of the similarities in terms of thermal-hydraulics, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis has been conducted using the CFX-5 code. As the results of the CFD analyses, the predicted flow patterns and variation of axial properties inside the calandria tank are well consistant with those of previous studies performed with FLUENT and this implies that the present scaling method is acceptable.

  • In order to define the effects on shapes of welding joint, during Post Welding Heat Treatment (PWHT), we have carried out numerical analysis on the several test pieces by using computer program which was based on thermal-elasto-plastic-creep theories for the study. And then, welding residual stresses after PWHT were measured same test-pieces to compare with the results of numerical analysis. The main results obtained from this study is as follows: 1) The distribution modes of welding residual stresses are same on the all test pieces after and during PWHT by the both sides (measurement and numerical analysis). 2) The mechanical difference for change the thickness of plate and bevel angle are not appeared. 3) In a mechanical point of view (like material quality test, welding deformation etc.), manimum bevel angle (40$^{\circ}$.) is more suitable than maximum bevel angle (70$^{\circ}$).

  • The design of a ground-source heat pump system includes specifications for a ground loop heat exchanger where the heat transfer rate depends on the thermal conductivity of the ground. To evaluate this heat transfer property, in-situ thermal response tests on four vertical test boreholes with different grouting materials were conducted by adding a monitored amount of heat to water over various test lengths. By measuring the water temperatures entering and exiting the loop, water flow rate, and heat load, effective thermal conductivity values of the ground were determined. The effect of increasing thermal conductivity of grouting materials from 0.82 to 1.05 W/m$^{\circ}C$ resulted in overall increases in effective ground thermal conductivity by 25.8% to 69.5%.

  • The sealing integrity is related to the safe operation of arrester the prime failure reason of porcelain housed arresters is moisture ingress. To be a meaningful tests a polymer arrester sealing test must be a realistic acceleration of field service. We think the test should be an accelerating course of actual temperatures, the enduring property to mechanical load and temperatures should be considered together. A union test method consisting of the thermal mechanical test and thermal cycling test is proposed to test the sealing integrity of polymeric arresters, which uses dielectric loss, leakage current 1mA DC voltage and partial discharge as the diagnostic techniques, and the test results were presented. The comparison states that the TMTCUT method is suitable fur the test of sealing integrity of polymeric arresters. .

  • Mechanical alloying using high-energy ball mill and subsequent spark plasma sintering (SPS) process was applied to understand mechanical alloying processing of Al-Fe alloy system. The thermal stability of mechanically alloyed Al-Fe alloy was intended to be enhanced by SPS process. Various analytical techniques including particle size analysis, density measurement, micro-Vickers hardness test, SEM, TEM, and X-ray diffractometry were adopted to find optimum processing conditions for mechanical alloying and subsequent SPS and to estimate thermal stability of the prepared alloy. It was found from the treatment of mechanically alloyed Al-8wt.%Fe powder mixture that needle-shaped $Al_3Fe$ precipitates was formed in the Al-Fe matrix, and the alloy compact showed enhanced densification and reached its full density with little loss of its fine microstructure. After heat treatment at $500^{\circC}$, it was also shown that the thermal stability of Al-8wt.%Fe alloy fabricated in the present study was enhanced, which was due to its fine microstructure developed by fast densification of SPS.

  • Many researches related to the reliability of Pb-free solder joints with PCB (printed circuit board) surface finish under thermal or vibration stresses are in progress, because the electronics is operating in hash environment. Therefore, it is necessary to assess Pb-free solder joints life with PCB surface finish under thermal and mechanical stresses. We have investigated 4-points bending fatigue lifetime of Pb-free solder joints with OSP (organic solderability preservative) and ENIG (electroless nickel and immersion gold) surface finish. To predict the bending fatigue life of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu solder joints, we use the test coupons mounted 192 BGA (ball grid array) package to be added the thermal stress by conducting thermal shock test, 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 cycles, respectively. An 4-point bending test is performed in force controlling mode. It is considered that as a failure when the resistance of daisy-chain circuit of test coupons reaches more than $1,000{\Omega}$. Finally, we obtained the solder joints fatigue life with OSP and ENIG surface finish using by Weibull probability distribution.

  • Metal matrix composites(MMCs) have been rapidly becoming one of the strongest candidates for structural materials fur many high temperature application. However, among the various high temperature environments in which metal matrix composites was applied, thermal shock is known to cause significant degradation in most MMC system. Due to the appreciable difference in coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) between reinforcement and metal matrix, internal stresses are generated following temperature changes. Infernal stresses affect degradation of mechanical properties of MMC by causing microscopic damage in interface and matrix during thermal cycling. Therefore, the nondestructive evaluation on thermal shock damage behavior of SiC/A16061 composite has been carried out using ultrasonics. For this study, SiC fiber reinforced metal matrix composite specimens fabricated by a squeeze casting technique were thermally cycled in the temperature range 298$\~$673 K up to 1000cyc1es. Three point bending test was conducted to investigate the efffct of thermal shock damage on mechanical properties. The relationship between thermal shock damage behavior and the propagation characteristics of surface wave and SH-ultrasonic wave was discussed by considering the result of SEM observation of fracture surface.
