This study presents a radiation-induced thermal conductivity degradation (TCD) model of zirconium as compared to the conventional UO2 TCD model. We derived the governing factors of the radiation-induced TCD model, such as maximum TCD value and temperature range of TCD. The maximum TCD value was derived by two methods, in which 1) experimental result of 32 % TCD was directly utilized as the maximum TCD value and 2) a theoretical approach based on dislocation was applied to derive the maximum TCD value. Further, the temperature range of TCD was determined to be 437-837 K by 1) experimental results of post-annealing of irradiation hardening as compared to 2) the rate theory and thermal equilibrium. Consequently, the radiation-induced TCD model of zirconium was derived to be $f_r=1-{\frac{0.32}{1+{\exp}\,\{(T-637)/45\}}}$. Because the thermal conductivity of zirconium is one of the factors determining the storage and transport system, this newly proposed model could improve the safety analysis of spent fuel storage systems.

Ceramic honeycomb structures have performed successfully as catalyst supports for meeting hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and nitrous emissions standards for gasoline-powered vehicles. Three-way catalyst converter has to withstand high temperature and thermal stress due to pressure fluctuations and vibrations. Thermal stress constitutes a major portion of the total stress which the ceramic catalyst support experiences in service. In this study, temperature distribution was measured at ceramic catalyst supports. Thermal durability was evaluated by power series dynamic fatigue damage model. Radial temperature gradient was higher than axial temperature gradient. Thermal stresses depended on direction of elastic modulus. Axial stresses are higher than tangential stresses. Tangential and axial stresses remained below thermal fatigue threshold in all engine operation ranges.
Three-dimensional finite element simulations are implemented for the in-pile thermo-mechanical behavior in U-Mo/Al monolithic fuel plates with different thermal creep rates of cladding involved. The numerical results indicate that the thickness increment of fuel foil rises with the thermal creep coefficient of cladding. The maximum Mises stress of cladding is reduced by ~85% from 344 MPa on the 98.0th day when the creep coefficient of cladding increases from 0.01 to 10.0, due to its equivalent thermal creep strain enlarged by 3.5 times. When the thermal creep coefficient of Aluminum cladding increases from 0 to 1.0, the maximum mesoscale stress of fuel foil varies slightly. At the same time, the peak mesoscale normal stress of fuel foil can reach 51 MPa on the 98.0th day for the thermal creep coefficient of 10, which increases by 60.3% of that with the thermal creep un-occurred in the cladding. The maximum through-thickness creep strain components of fuel foil differ slightly for different thermal creep coefficients of cladding. The dangerous region of fuel foil becomes much closer to the heavily irradiated side when the creep coefficient of cladding becomes 10.0. The creep performance of Aluminum cladding should be optimized for the integrity of monolithic fuel plates.

Thermal shock resistance of structural ceramics is a property that is difficult to quantity, and as such is usually expressed in terms of a number of empirical resistance parameters. These are dependant on the conditions imposed, but one method that can be used is the examination of density, Young's modulus and thermal expansion retention after quenching. For high temperature applications, long-annealing thermal durability, cycle thermal stability and residual mechanical properties are very important if these materials are to be used between $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1300^{\circ}C$. In this study, an excellent thermal shock-resistant material based on $Al_2TiO_5-mullite$ composites of various compositions was fabricated by sintering reaction from the individual oxides and adjusting the composition of $Al_2O_3TiO_2/SiO_2$ ratios. The characterization of the damage induced by thermal shock was done by measuring the evolution of the Young's modulus using ultrasonic analysis, density and thermal expansion coefficients.
Silicon nitride is one of the most successful engineering ceramics, owing to a favorable combination of properties, including high strength, high hardness, low thermal expansion coefficient, and high fracture toughness. However, the impact damage behavior of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics has not been widely characterized. In this study, sphere and explosive indentations were used to characterize the static and dynamic damage behavior of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics with different microstructures. Three grades of $Si_3N_4$ with different grain size and shape, fine-equiaxed, medium, and coarse-elongated, were prepared. In order to observe the subsurface damaged zone, a bonded-interface technique was adopted. Subsurface damage evolution of the specimens was then characterized extensively using optical and electron microscopy. It was found that the damage response depends strongly on the microstructure of the ceramics, particularly on the glassy grain boundary phase. In the case of static indentation, examination of subsurface damage revealed competition between brittle and ductile damage modes. In contrast to static indentation results, dynamic indentation induces a massive subsurface yield zone that contains severe micro-failures. In this study, it is suggested that the weak glassy grain boundary phase plays an important role in the resistance to dynamic fracture.
Traditional approaches for structural health monitoring (SHM) seldom take ambient uncertainty (temperature, humidity, ambient vibration) into consideration, while their impacts on structural responses are substantial, leading to a possibility of raising false alarms. A few predictors model-based approaches deal with these uncertainties through complex numerical models running online, rendering the SHM approach to be compute-intensive, slow, and sometimes not practical. Also, with model-based approaches, the imperative need for a precise understanding of the structure often poses a problem for not so well understood complex systems. The present study employs a data-based approach coupled with Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) to correlate recorded response time histories under varying temperature conditions to corresponding damage scenarios. EMD decomposes the response signal into a finite set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). A two-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (2DCNN) is further trained to associate these IMFs to the respective damage cases. The use of IMFs in place of raw signals helps to reduce the impact of sensor noise while preserving the essential spatio-temporal information less-sensitive to thermal effects and thereby stands as a better damage-sensitive feature than the raw signal itself. The proposed algorithm is numerically tested on a single span bridge under varying temperature conditions for different damage severities. The dynamic strain is recorded as the response since they are frame-invariant and cheaper to install. The proposed algorithm has been observed to be damage sensitive as well as sufficiently robust against measurement noise.
Damages on Si substrate induced by Ar ion implantation and it annealing behavior during rapid thermal annealing were investigated by the cross-sectional TEM (transmissin electron microscopy), RB(Rutherfordbackscattering) spectra an dthermal wave (TW) modulation reflectance methods. Continuous amorphous layer extending to the surface were generated by Ar ion implantation for higher doses than 1 $\times$1015cm-2. The recrystallization of the amorphous layer prodeeded as the annealing temperature increased . However the amorphous /crystal interfacial undulations caused the micro twins and damage clusters. Damage clusters generated by lower doses than 1 $\times$1015 cm-2 disappeared slowly as the annealing temperature increased, but even at 110$0^{\circ}C$ a few damage clusters still remained.
We developed the Hyper-thermal Neutral Beam (HNB) sputtering process as a plasma damage free process for ITO top anode deposition on inverted Top emission OLED (ITOLED). For examining the effect of the HNB sputtering system, Inverted Bottom emission OLEDs (IBOLED) with ITO top anode electrode were fabricated; the characteristics of IBOLED using HNB sputtering process shows significant suppression of plasma induced damage.

Several methods have been developed to predict the creep rupture time of the steam pipes in thermal power plant. However, existing creep life prediction methods give very conservative value at operating stress of power plant and creep rupture strain cannot be well estimated. Therefore, in this study, creep rupture time and strain prediction method accounting for material damage and grain boundary sliding is newly proposed and compared with the existing experimental data. The creep damage evolves by continuous cavity nucleation and constrained cavity growth. The results showed good correlation between the theoretically predicted creep rupture time and the experimental data. And creep rupture strain may be well estimated by using the proposed method.
