  • Duplex composites such as Y-TZP/Y-TZP-20 wt.% Al2O3 and Y-TZP/Y-TZP- 40 wt.% Al2O3 were made by mixing the sieve-shaked granules followed by isostatic pressing and sintering at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. So Y-TZP became matrix region and Y-TZP-20 wt.% Al2O3 or Y-TZP-40 wt.% Al2O3 became dispersed regions. In these composites, propagating cracks due to thermal shock always run into the dispersed region because these regions act as compressive zone due to low thermal expansion than matrix region. So duplexes having dispersed regions of Y-TZP-40 wt.% Al2O3 showed higher retained strength after thermal shock than matrix only composites because crack propagations were stopped more or less in the dispersed region. But when crack propagations were much more easy than matrix like Y-TZP-20 wt.% Al2O3 region, retained strength was decreased than the matrix only composites despite of the low initial strength.

  • The influence of NiCrAlY bond coating on the adhesion properties of an Fe thermal coating sprayed on an Al substrate was investigated. By applying a bond coat, an adhesion strength of 21MPa was obtained, which was higher than the 15.5MPa strength of the coating without the bond coat. Formation of cracks at the interface of the bond coat and the Al substrate was suppressed by applying the bond coat. Microstructural analysis of the coating interface using EBSD and TEM indicated that the dominant bonding mechanism was mechanical interlocking. Mechanical interlocking without crack defects in the coating interface may improve the adhesion strength of the coating. In conclusion, the use of an NiCrAlY bond coat is an effective method of improving the adhesion properties of thermal sprayed Fe coatings on Al substrates.

  • Thermal Prestressing Method for continuous composite girder bridges is a new design and construction method developed to induce initial composite stresses in the concrete slab at negative bending regions. Due to the induced initial stresses, prevention of tensile cracks at concrete slab, reduction of steel girder section, and reduction of reinforcing bars are possible. Thus, economical and construction efficiency can be improved. Method for determining optimum heating region of Thermal Prestressing Method, has not been established although such method is essential for increasing efficiency of the designing process. Trial-and-error method used in previous studies is far from efficient and more rational method for computing optimal heating region is required. In this study, efficient method for determining optimum heating region in the use of Thermal Prestressing Method is developed based on artificial neural network algorithm, which is widely adopted to pattern recognition, optimization, diagnosis, and estimation problems in various fields. Back-propagation algorithm, which is commonly used as a learning algorithm in neural network problems, is used for training of the neural network. Through case studies of 2-span continuous and 3-span continuous composite girder bridges using the developed process, the optimal heating regions are obtained.

  • Thermal stress-induced failure in the free edge region of various thin carbon/epoxy composite laminates(1mm thick) has been investigated using the three-dimensional finite-element stress analysis, ultrasonic C-scan and microscopic observations. High thermal in-plane and interlaminar stresses were predicted in the interior layer near the free edge boundaries of the laminates. In the interior lamina, not in the skin lamina, of the thin laminates with lay-up of $[0_2/90_2]_s,\;[45_2/-45_0]_s,\;[0_2/60_2]_s$ treated by liquid $N_2$ immersion, many transverse matrix cracks took place due to thermal stress concentration, which agreed qualitatively with the above predictions.

  • Fatigue cracks of the turbocharger are often observed for high performance engines under thermal shock tests. Maximum exhaust gas temperature of recently developed gasoline engines could reach approximately $950^{\circ}C$. It's very important to estimate transient temperature histories during thermal shock cycles to predict the stress and the fatigue life of the turbocharger. With these temperature profiles, temperature-dependent material properties and boundary conditions, we could identify critical locations by the application of finite element simulation technologies. In this paper, we applied the reliable analysis approach to the actual turbocharger to predict the weak locations due to the repetitions of plastic strains and compared the results with the crack locations under physical engine test.

  • The mica/epoxy composite used in generator(rated 22 kV and 500 MW) stator windings was aged at 180$\^{C}$ for up to 1000 hours in air and hydrogen. The degradation mechanism was investigated through the defect of evolution and microstructural analysis by performing SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope). As the thermal aging time increases, the number of voids per unit volume increases at the mica/epoxy interface of generator stator windings. The aged specimens in hydrogen showed retarded generation and growth of voids. Accelerated aging tests were conducted using the combination of thermal and electrical aging in air and hydrogen. The aging was carried out at a combined stress such as thermal aging at 110$\^{C}$, electrical aging at 5.5 kV/mm and frequencies 420 Hz in air, and electrical aging at 5.5 kV/mm and frequencies 420 Hz in hydrogen (pressure 4 kg/㎠). Thermal and electrical aging generates large voids at the mica/epoxy interface in air. Electrical aging in hydrogen also generates small voids, delaminations and cracks in mica tapes.

  • This study has been conducted to clarify the effect of sulfur content and welding thermal cycles on reheat cracking susceptibility in the multi-pass weld metal of Fe-36%Ni alloy. Reheat cracking occurred in the preceding weld pass reheated by subsequent passes. Microscopic observations showed that reheat cracking propagated along grain boundaries which resulted in intergranular brittle fractures. The region where reheat cracking occurred and the number of cracks increased with the increase in sulfur content of the alloys. These experimental results suggested that reheat cracking was associated with the embrittlement of grain boundaries, which was promoted by sulfur and subsequent welding thermal cycles. AES analysis indicated that the sulfur segregation occurred at grain boundaries in the reheated weld metal. On the basis of these results, the cause of reheat cracking in multi-pass welding can be attributed to hot ductility loss of weld metals due to sulfur segregation which was accelerated by the reheating with multi-pass welding thermal cycles.

  • 67Ni-22Cr-10Al-1Y and $ZrO_2-8Y_2O_3$ were coated on the substrate surface of ST304 and Al2024 by the plasma spraying method. The adgesion of the films varies depending on the substrates and the laminating method. In the case of STS304, the cracks were observed at thermal shock temperature difference ${Delta}T$ of $900^{circ}C$ in the non functionally gradient material(NFGM) and at $1100^{circ}C$ in the functionally gradient material(FGM). The film adhesion of the FGM is better than that of the NFGM in ST304. The cumulative AE count of the FGM of STS304 increased continuously at the bending test. But the NFGM of STS304 showed discontinuity of the AE count. The total AE count for the FGM of STS304 decreased as the number of thermal shock increased, and this tendency was evident as the thermal shock temperature difference increased.

  • Experimental study of the deterioration of high-temperature rock subjected to rapid cooling is essential for thermal engineering applications. To evaluate the influence of thermal shock on heated granite with different temperatures, laboratory tests were conducted to record the changes in the physical properties of granite specimens and the dynamic mechanical characteristics of granite after rapid cooling were experimentally investigated by using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The results indicate that there are threshold temperatures ($500-600^{\circ}C$) for variations in density, porosity, and P-wave velocity of granite with increasing treatment temperature. The stress-strain curves of $500-1000^{\circ}C$ show the brittle-plastic transition of tested granite specimens. It was also found that in the temperature range of $200-400^{\circ}C$, the through-cracks induced by rapid cooling have a decisive influence on the failure pattern of rock specimens under dynamic load. Moreover, the increase of crack density due to higher treatment temperature will result in the dilution of thermal shock effect for the rocks at temperatures above $500^{\circ}C$. Eventually, a fitting formula was established to relate the dynamic peak strength of pretreated granite to the crack density, which is the exponential function.

  • The effect of particle sizes of the metal matrix composites containing 10 wt.%SiCp was investigated with using various tools. The results showed that tool life decreased considerably with increasing particle size and cutting speed. The wear resistance of TiC-coated tools was considerably higher than that of the other tools. It was observed that abrasive wear was the main responsible mechanism for wear of the tool thermal cracks were at high speed while a built-edge formation was also evident at lower speed.
