Effect of Thermal Barrier Coating and Film Cooling Condition on the Cooling Performance of Liquid-propellant Rocket Engine Combustor (액체로켓 엔진 연소기의 열차폐 코팅 및 막냉각 조건에 따른 냉각 성능 변화 해석)

  • The effect of ceramic thermal barrier coating thickness on the cooling performance of a liquid-propellant rocket engine combustor has been investigated through combustion/cooling performance analysis whose results verified against measured data from hot-firing tests. Also have been confirmed the effects of film cooling amount near the face plate on the coolant temperature and on the thermal barrier coating surface temperature. Some important points to be considered for designing cooling schemes for regeneratively cooled rocket engine combustor have been drawn and reviewed from present study and further verification of the analysis tool should be performed in the future.

Process Optimization of Thermal-sprayed STS316 Coating (STS316 용사코팅의 최적 공정 설계)

  • In the present study, process optimization for thermal-sprayed STS316 coating has been performed using $L_9(3^4)$ orthogonal array and analysis of variance (ANOVA). STS316 coatings were fabricated by flame spray process on steel substrate, and the hardness test and microstructure observation of the coatings were studied. The results of hardness test were analyzed by ANOVA. The ANOVA results showed that the spray distance had the greatest effect on hardness of the coating, on the other hands, the effects of oxygen gas flow and spray distance were ignorable. From these results, the optimal combination of the flame spray parameters could be derived, and confirmation experiment was carried out to verify these derived results. The calculated hardness of the coatings by ANOVA was found to approximately close to that of confirmation experimental result. Thus, it was considered that design of experiments using orthogonal array and ANOVA was effective for process optimization of thermal-sprayed STS316 coating.

Failure Analysis of Commercial Water-Repellent Coatings for High Temperature Plant (플랜트 부품용 상용 발수코팅의 고온 환경 고장 특성 비교 분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate failure characteristic and mechanism of four commercial water-repellent coatings for elevated temperature machinery applications. Method: Thermal degradation was performed for up to 64 thermal cycles. 1 cycle consists of 15 minute holding at 523K under 300rpm revolution and 15 minute-natural cooling. Contact angle was measured and microstructure of the coating layer was observed by using a scanning electron microscope. Results: Four kinds of commercial repellent coating showed hydrophobic or super-hydrophobic property implying that all coatings are suitable for room temperature application. Contact angle of three kinds of commercial coatings decreased rapidly after thermal exposure, while only one specimen having hydrophobic surface showed extremely slow degradation. Conclusion: Observed decrease in contact angle of the coatings were attributed to formation of macro-sized pores and disappearance of micro-protrusion during thermal exposure. Optimum water-repellent coating needs to be selected under the consideration of initial contact angle as sell as service temperature.

  • In this work, the optimal process has been designed by $L_9(3^4)$ orthogonal array and analysis of variance(ANOVA) for thermal-sprayed Ni-based hard coating.   • Marine transportation by ships is characterized by remote, large-volume and lower rates than the others carry system. Ships account for over 80% of all international trading, and marine transportation is an internationally competitive, strategic, and great national important industry. The construction of larger and faster ships has brought about many problems such as cavitations and erosion corrosion. Cavitations and erosion corrosion make damages on materials and leads to break down members due to continuous physical contacts with shock waves and fluids from the generation and extinction of air bubbles in sea water vortex. The steel used for ship constructions was spray-coated with Al wire, and additionally sealed with fluorine silicone sealing material. Results of experiment, corrosion resistance of sealed thermal spray coating was improved, however in cavitation resistance, the large effect was not appeared. Accordingly, this study applied for thermal spray coating to provide better electrochemical characteristics and corrosion resistance in marine environment.

  • A solar collector surface coated with a low emission material is still imported from other developed countries expensively. Thus it is very significant to develop a new coating method with a cheap alternative coating material instead of the imported high-cost collector surface. A thermal spray method was adopted to coat a cheap Titania on a copper plate. Generally, a new coating on the copper plate was conducted successfully by selecting a proper ratio of carbon and acetylene. By measuring an absorption rate of solar and heat emission rate, all the plate types gained a high absorption rate of 98% approximately, more or less, but all of the types still have a high emission. Finally it was clear that more research is needed to advance the coated-plate to subdue the high emission from the hot plate surface and the higher the Titania's proportion is, the lower the emission is on the surface.

Property Analysis of Solar Selective Coatings (태양 선택흡수막의 특성 분석)

  • The chemical composition of the black Cr solar selective coatings electrodeposited were investigated for property analysis by using a XPS(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) before and after annealing in air at $300^{\circ}C{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ for 120 hours. Black Cr selective coating exposed by solar radiation for 5 months was compared with annealed sample. In addition, The Cu solar selective coatings were prepared by thermal oxidation method for low temperature application. The samples obtained were characterized by using the optical reflectance measurements by using a spectrometer. Optical properties of oxidized Cu solar coatings were solar absorptance $({\alpha}){\simeq}0.62$ and thermal emittance $({\epsilon}){\simeq}0.41(100^{\circ}C)$. In the as-prepared Cr black selective coating, the surface of the coating was found to have Cr hydroxide and Cr. The Cr hydroxide of the major component was converted to $Cr_2O_3$ or $CrO_3$ form after annealing at $500^{\circ}C$ with the desorption of water molecules. The black Cr selective coating was degraded significantly at temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. The main optical degradation modes of this coating were diffusion of Cu substrate materials.

Fracture Analysis of Plasma Spray Coating by Classification of AE Signals (AE파형분류에 의한 용사코팅재의 파손해석)

  • The deformation and fracture behaviors of both Al2O3 and Ni 4.5wt.%Al plasma thermal spray coating were investigated by an acoustic emission method. Plasma thermal spray coating is formed by a process in which melted particles flying with high speed towards substrate, then crash and spread on the substrate surface cooled and solidified in a very short time, stacking of the particles makes coating. A tensile test is conducted on notch specimens in a stress range below the elastic limit of substrate. A bendind test is done on smooth specimens. The waveforms of AE generated from the both test coating specimens can be classified by FFT analysis into two types which low frequency(type I) and high frequency(type II). The type I waveform is considered to corresponds exfoliation of coating layers and type II waveform corresponds the plastic deformation of notch tip. The fracture of the coating layers can estimate by AE event and amplitude, because AE features increase when the deformation generates.

A study on the high temperature properties of CoNiCrAlY coating fabricated by HVOF and LPPS process (LPPS용사법과 HVOF 용사법으로 제조된 CoNiCrAlY 코팅의 고온물성에 관한 연구)

  • A Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) can play an important role in protecting parts from harmful environments at high temperatures such as oxidation, corrosion, and wear in order to improve the efficiency of aircraft engines by lowering the surface temperature of the turbine blade. The TBC can increase the life span of the product and improve the operating properties. Therefore, in this study the mechanical and thermal properties of the TBC such as oxidation, fatigue and shock at high temperatures were evaluated. A samples of a bond coat (CoNiCrAlY) produced by the High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) and Low Pressure Plasma Spray (LPPS) method were used. The thickness of the HVOF coating layer was approximately $450\mu\textrm{m}$ to 500$\mu\textrm{m}$ and the hardness number of the coating layer was between 350Hv and 400Hv. The thickness of the LPPS coating was about 350$\mu\textrm{m}$ to 400$\mu\textrm{m}$ and the hardness number of the coating was about 370Hv to 420Hv. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that CoNiCrAlY coating layer of the HVOF and LPPS was composed of the $\beta$and ${\gamma}$phase. After the high temperature oxidation test, the oxide scale with about l0$\mu\textrm{m}$ to 20$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness appeared at the coating surface on the Al-depleted zone was observed under the oxide scale layer.

  • Al and Zn are used to protect the steel structures from corrosion. In the present studies, 15Al-85Zn alloy wires has been used for the deposition of coating by arc thermal spray process. Moreover, this process of coating exhibited severe defects formation, therefore, this coating was post-treated with different concentrations i.e. 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5M sodium hexa meta phosphate (Na6[(PO3)6]: SHMP) to fill to defects of deposited coatings and assessed their corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution with exposure periods. After the treatment, the porosity of the coating reduced significantly by formation of composite oxide films onto the coating surface. Initially, 0.5 M SHMP treated coating exhibited highest in total impedance due to significant reduction of porosity but once the exposure periods are extended, the composite oxides are dissolved, thus, total impedance is decreased.
