  • The TMSR-SF0 simulator is an integral effect thermal-hydraulic experimental system for the development of thorium molten salt reactor (TMSR) program in China. The simulator has two heat transport loops with liquid FLiNaK. In literature, the 95% level confidence uncertainties of the thermophysical properties of FLiNaK are recommended, and the uncertainties of density, heat capacity, thermal conductivity and viscosity are ±2%, ±10, ±10% and ±10% respectively. In order to investigate the effects of thermophysical properties uncertainties on the molten salt heat transport system, the uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of the heat transfer characteristics of the simulator system are carried out on a RELAP5 model. The uncertainties of thermophysical properties are incorporated in simulation model and the Monte Carlo sampling method is used to propagate the input uncertainties through the model. The simulation results indicate that the uncertainty propagated to core outlet temperature is about ±10 ℃ with a confidence level of 95% in a steady-state operation condition. The result should be noted in the design, operation and code validation of molten salt reactor. In addition, more experimental data is necessary for quantifying the uncertainty of thermophysical properties of molten salts.

  • The effect of citric acid on rice starch gelatinization and low-temperature (4 ℃) storage was studied in order to produce rice cake with a lower retrogradation rate. A citric acid solution in the ratio of 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% (w/w) of the water used during production was utilized. The gelatinization properties, gel strength, thermal properties, and texture analysis were evaluated to determine the retrogradation rate. The result showed that acid hydrolysis occurred in samples treated with citric acid. Thus, increasing citric acid decreased gelatinization temperature (58.63±1.98 to 45.84±1.24 ℃). The moduli of elasticity increased with increasing citric acid concentration, indicating an increased gel strength. Thermal analysis of starch showed that the onset, peak, and conclusion temperatures of retrogradation were increased significantly with the storage period and decreased with citric acid concentration. After 72 h of low-temperature storage (4 ℃), the retrogradation rate was lowest in the rice cake with 1.5% citric acid solution, with an increased ratio of 12.01 to 13.60% compared to the control sample, with a ratio of 12.99 to 43.54%. This shows a high retrogradation rate in the control sample. Additionally, sensory properties and retrogradation ratio suggest that the addition of 1.0% citric acid solution during rice cake production is efficient in retarding the retrogradation without an adverse effect on the rice cake modeling and acceptance.

  • In the design of injection molds, the temperature distribution and deformation of the mold is one of the most important parameters that affect the flow characteristics, flash generation, and surface appearance, etc. Plastic injection analyses have been carried out to predict the temperature distribution of the mold and the pressure distribution on the cavity surface. As the input loads, we transfer the temperature and pressure results to the structural analysis. We compare the structural analysis results with the thermal expansion effect using the actual flash and step size of a smartphone cover part. To reduce the flash problem, we proposed a new mold design, and verified the results by performing simulations.

  • A thermal-hydraulic design and performance analysis computer code for a once-through steam generator using straight tubes is developed. To benchmark the developed physical models and computer code, an once-through steam generator developed by other designer is simulated and the calculated results are compared with the design data. Also, the same steam generator is analyzed with the best-estimate thermal-hydraulic system code, MARS, for the code-to-code validation. The overall characteristics of heat transfer area, pressure and temperature distributions calculated by the developed code show general agreements with the published design data as well as the analysis results of MARS. It is demonstrated that the developed code can be utilized for diverse purposes, such as, sensitivity analyses and optimum thermal design of a once-through steam generator.

  • The present study has been carried out to predict the heat transfer characteristics of reverse heat loss method for a residential refrigerator by using numerical analysis and corresponding experiment. From the measured values of temperature and heat input, one can conclude that, the temperature inside the refrigerator has a nearly linear relationship with heat input. The effect of gasket heat loss was examined with the change of thermal conductivity of gasket region. The appropriate thermal conductivity of gasket region was acquired from the comparison of heat losses with the experimental result and numerical analysis. The result of calculated heat losses had accuracy within 1.8% error with the experimental result. With the selected thermal conductivity of gasket region, the effectiveness of reverse heat loss method was examined with the change of thermal conductivity of vacuum insulation panel.

  • Buckling and free vibration behavior of a laminated cylindrical panel exposed to non-uniform thermal load is addressed in the present study. The approach comprises of three portions, in the first portion, heat transfer analysis is carried out to compute the non-uniform temperature fields, whereas second portion consists of static analysis wherein stress fields due to thermal load is obtained, and the last portion consists of buckling and prestressed modal analyzes to capture the critical buckling temperature as well as first five natural frequencies and associated mode shapes. Finite element is used to perform the numerical investigation. The detailed parametric study is carried out to analyze the effect of nature of temperature variation across the panel, laminate sequence and structural boundary constraints on the buckling and free vibration behavior. The relation between the buckling temperature of the panel under uniform temperature field and non-uniform temperature field is established using magnification factor. Among four cases considered in this study for position of heat sources, highest magnification factor is observed at the forefront curved edge of the panel where heat source is placed. It is also observed that thermal buckling strength and buckling mode shapes are highly sensitive to nature of temperature field and the effect is significant for the above-mentioned temperature field. Furthermore, it is also observed that the panel with antisymmetric laminate has better buckling strength. Free vibration frequencies and the associated mode shapes are significantly influenced by the non-uniform temperature variations.

  • The modular construction method is an off-site construction method using built-in structures from the manufacturing facilities. Modular construction is commonly applied to buildings which have relatively smaller and simpler structures than other types of buildings. Although modular building has emerged in the domestic construction industry as an alternative building strategy, previous researches on the environmental characteristics of modular building has not been comprehensively studied. Thus, this study empirically analyzed the insulation performance of thermal bridge and condensation parts of the modular buildings by using IR image analysis, Air-Surface Temperature Ratio method, and temperature difference ratio. The insulation performance analysis was conducted by comparing a modular building and a RC building in Seoul. The results shows that there was no significant difference between insulation performances of RC building and modular building. Furthermore

  • In the present study, the thermal performance of multiple rock caverns for large-scale thermal energy storage (TES) was numerically investigated for different separation distances between the caverns through heat transfer analysis using a computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT. The thermal performance of multiple caverns was assessed in terms of the thermal stratification within the caverns and the heat loss to the surroundings, and the heating characteristics of the rock around the caverns were investigated. The results of numerical simulation showed that there was little difference in thermal performance between multiple TES caverns with different separation distances when the surrounding rock was less heated and it reached thermal steady-state, which represent the thermal states of the surrounding rock at the early and long-term operational stages of the TES caverns, respectively. However, as the separation distance decreased, the rock between the caverns reached thermal steady-state more quickly, and thus the heat loss from the caverns tended to converge rapidly to the value of heat loss occurred under thermal steady-state conditions in the surrounding rock. This result implies that the operating cost of heating the surrounding rock (i.e., rock heating) can be reduced with a reduction in the separation distance between multiple caverns, and suggests that the separation distance should be determined by considering the operating cost of rock heating as well as the construction cost of the caverns.

  • Urban development and densification have led to the Urban Heat Island Effect, in which the temperature of urban space is higher than the surrounding areas, and the intensity is increasing with climate change. In addition, when the city's air temperature rises in summer, low-income, elderly population, and socially vulnerable people who have health problems lack the ability to cope with the elevated heat environment. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the urban heat island area of Seoul through Hotspot analysis, which is a spatial statistics technique, and explored physical environments, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of urban heat island effect areas using logistic regression models. This study performed urban heat island hotspot analysis using the average air temperatures of the 423 administrative dongs in Seoul. Analysis results identified that the urban heat islands were concentrated in Jung-gu, Jongno-gu, Yongsan-gu, and Yeongdeungpo-gu. Logistic regression analysis results indicated that urban heat island areas of Seoul were affected by residential floor area ratio, commercial facility floor area ratio, overall floor area ratio, impervious surface ratio, and normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI). In addition, as a result of analyzing the vulnerable area of thermal environment considering the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the heat island area, urban heat island areas of Seoul were significantly associated with the proportion of low-income elderly living alone. The result of this study provided useful insights for urban thermal environmental design and policy development that could improve the thermal environment for the socially disadvantaged urban population.
