  • Severe accident scenarios in nuclear reactors, such as nuclear meltdown, reveal that an extremely hot molten core may fall into the nuclear reactor cavity and seriously affect the safety of the nuclear containment vessel due to the chain reaction caused by the reaction between the molten core and concrete. This paper reports on research focused on the type and amount of vapor produced during the reaction between a high-temperature molten core and concrete, as well as on the erosion rate of concrete and the heat transfer characteristics at its vicinity. This study identifies themass fraction and melting temperature as the most influential properties of concrete necessary for a safety analysis conducted in relation to the thermal interaction between the molten core and the basemat concrete. The types of concrete that are actually used in nuclear reactor cavities were investigated. The $H_2O$ content in concrete required for the computation of the relative amount of gases generated by the chemical reaction of the vapor, the quantity of $CO_2$ necessary for computing the cooling speed of the molten core, and the melting temperature of concrete are evaluated experimentally for the molten core-concrete interaction analysis.

  • A numerical study of premixed combustion within a porous ceramic burner (PCB) is performed to understand flame behavior with respect to various model parameters. Basic flame structure within the porous ceramic burner and species profiles such as NO and CO are examined. Sensitivity analysis of flame speed, gas and solid temperature, NO and CO emission from the burner with respect to reaction steps and various physical properties of the ceramic material is applied to find the most significant parameters in selection of porous materials for the porous ceramic burner. Effects of thermal conductivity, extinction coefficient and scattering albedo on the burner characteristics are studied through the sensitivity analysis. The results of sensitivity study reveal the order of importance in ceramic material properties to get suitable burner performance. Scattering albedo, which governs the ratio of absorbed energy by the ceramic material to total radiative energy transferred, is one of the most important parameters in the material properties since it affects the actual absorbed radiation rate and thus it largely affects the flame structure. Through the study, it is found that the sensitivity study can be used to estimate the flame behavior within the porous ceramic burner more effectively.

  • The activation energy of CPVC (Chlorinated Poly Vinyl Chloride) used for non-metallic synthetic resin piping in fire-fighting was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The activation energy was determined using by TGA kinetic methods, such as Kissinger and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method. The calculated activation energy was 128.07 kJ/mol (Kissinger method) and 145.60 kJ/mol (Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method). The difference in activation energies calculated by the Kissinger method and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method was not considered to be significant considering that the different analysis methods. The combustion characteristics will be tested in a future study through an evaluation of thermal deterioration using an accelerated deterioration and air oven aging test and the lifetime of CPVC will be predicted.

  • The new experimental setup has been built at the 11b channel of the IBR-2 research reactor at FLNP, JINR, to study the elemental composition of samples by registration of prompt gamma emission during thermal neutron capture. The setup consists of a curved mirror neutron guide and a radiation-resistant HPGe high-purity germanium detector. The detector is surrounded by lead shielding to suppress the natural background gamma level. The sample is placed in a vacuum channel and surrounded by a LiF shield to suppress the gamma background generated by scattered neutrons. This work presents characteristics of the experimental setup. An example of hydrogen concentration determining in a diamond powder made by detonation synthesis is given and on its basis, the sensitivity of the setup is calculated being ~4 ㎍.

  • In this research, a high-elasticity acrylic emulsion binder with core-shell polymerization and self-crosslinking system is mixed with a flame-retardant water-dispersed polyurethane (PUD) binder. In addition, finite element analysis was conducted through virtual engineering software ANSYS by applying three representative nonlinear material models. The most suitable nonlinear material model was selected after the relative comparison between the actual experimental values and the predicted values of the properties derived from simulations. The selected nonlinear material model is intended to be used as a nonlinear material model for computational simulation analysis that simulates the experimental environment of the vibration test (ASTM E1399) and the actual fire safety test (ASTM E1966). When the mass fraction of thermally expandable graphite was 0.7%, the thermal and physical properties were the best. Among the nonlinear material models, the simulation result of the Ogden model showed the closest value to the actual result.

  • Prefabricated exterior wall panel is the main non-load-bearing component of assembly building, which affects the comprehensive performance of thermal insulation and durability of the building. It is of great significance to develop new prefabricated exterior wall panel with durable and lightweight characteristics for the development of energy-saving and assembly building. In the prefabricated sandwich insulation hanging wall panel, the selection of material for the outer layer and the arrangement of the connector of the inner and outer wall layers affect the mechanical performance and durability of the wall panels. In this paper, high performance cement-based composites (HPFRC) are used in the outer layer of the new type wall panel. FRP bars are used as the interface connector. Through experiments and analysis, the influence of the arrangement of connectors on the mechanical behaviors of thin-walled composite wall panel and the panel with window openings under two working conditions are investigated. The failure modes and the role of connectors of thin-walled composite wallboard are analyzed. The influence of the thickness of the wall layer and their combination on the strain growth of the control section, the initial crack resistance, the ultimate bearing capacity and the deformation of the wall panels are analyzed. The research work provides a technical reference for the engineering design of the light-weight thin-walled and durable composite sandwich wall panel.

  • Recently, aluminum pipes have been used instead of steel pipes for open and shut machines in vinyl housing because of its corrosion-resistance and light weight. In particular, the light weight is very useful for fitting and removal by human resources. On the other hand, an aluminum pipe is weak in winter because aluminum has a larger thermal expansion coefficient than steel. This study examined the freezing and bursting of aluminum pipes by numerical analysis. The mechanical-thermal deformation characteristics were analyzed under the condition of ice volumetric expansion in aluminum pipes reaching 50%. From numerical analysis, large stresses above the yield stress occurred in aluminum pipe after ice expanded in the net diameter immediately. In addition, the freezing and bursting of aluminum pipes was predicted around an ice volumetric expansion of 6 - 7% because the thickness of the aluminum pipe reached an aluminum elongation ratio of 17%. Therefore, it is recommended that aluminum pipes be sealed perfectly to prevent water flow in the pipe. These results suggest that it is very difficult to prevent freezing and bursting of aluminum pipes by water freezing in the pipe.

  • In this paper, computer simulations of the physical Phenomena occurring in the arc region before and after current zero were carried out to evaluate the dielectric recovery characteristics of two types of double-flow nozzles. A commercial CFD Program "PHOENICS" is used for the simulation and the user-coded subroutines to consider the arcing phenomena were added to this program by the authors. The computed results were verified by the comparison with the test results presented by the research group of BBC. In order to investigate the state of the arc region after current zero, the simulation was carried out with four steps. They are cold gas flow analysis, steady state arc simulation, transient arc simulation before current zero, transient hot gas flow simulation after current zero. The semi-experimental arc radiation model is adapted to consider the radiation energy transport and Prandtl′s mixing length model is employed as the turbulence model. The electric field and the magnetic field were calculated with the same grid structure used for the simulation of the flow field. The streamer criterion was introduced to evaluate the dielectric recovery characteristics after current zero. Compared with the results obtained by assuming the current zero state in the former studies, it has been found that the results obtained by considering the state before current zerowere more accurate.

  • M-doped (M=Al, Ni) ZnO thermoelectric materials were fully densified at low temperatures of 800∼1,000$^{\circ}C$ and their sintering characteristics and microstructural features were investigated. Electron microscopic analysis showed that the addition of NiO promoted tile formation of solid solution and caused actively grain growth. The addition of A1$_2$O$_3$ prevented the evaporation of pure ZnO at grain boundaries and suppressed the grain growth by the formation of secondary phase. In case of the addition of A1$_2$O$_3$ together with NiO, the specimen showed an excellent microstructure and also the SEM-EBSP (Electron Back-scattered Diffraction Pattern) analysis confirmed that it shows a superior grain boundary distribution to the others specimens. These microstructural characteristics induced by the addition of A1$_2$O$_3$ together with NiO may increase the electrical conductivity by the increase in carrier concentration and decrease the thermal conductivity by the phonon scattering effect and, consequently, improve the thermoelectric property.
