Surface treatments and their effects on high temperature properties for the Hastelloy X, which is a promising candidate alloy for high temperature heat-transport system, have been evaluated. For TiAlN and $Al_2O_3$ overlay coatings, the two different PVD (physical vapor deposition) methods using an arc discharge and a sputtering, were applied, respectively. In addition, a different surface treatment method of the diffusion coating by a pack cementation of Al (aluminiding) was also adopted in this study. To achieve enhanced thermal oxidation resistance at $1000^{\circ}C$ by suppressing the inhomogeneous formation of thick $Cr_2O_3$ crust at the surface region, a study for the surface modification methods on the morphological and structural properties of Hastelloy X substrates has been conducted. The structural and compositional properties of each sample were characterized before and after heat-treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ under air and He environment. The results showed that the Al diffusion coating showed the more enhanced high temperature properties than the overlay coatings such as the suppressed thick $Cr_2O_3$ crust formation and lower wear loss.
In this study, The TRITGO code was introduced, which can predict the amount of tritium production, it's transport, removal, distribution and the level of contamination for the produced hydrogen by the tritium on the VHTR (very high temperature gas cooled reactor). The TRITGO code was improved so that the permeation to the IS Iodine Sulfide) loop for producing the hydrogen can be simulated. The contamination level of the produced hydrogen by the tritium was predicted by the improved code for the VHTR with 600MW thermal power. The contamination level for the produced hydrogen by tritium was predicted as 0.055 Bq/$H_2-g$. This level is three order of lower than the regulation value of 56 Bq/$H_2-g$ from Japan. From this study, the following results were obtained. it is important that the fuel coating (SiC layer) should be kept intact to prevent the tritium from releasing. Also it is necessary that the level of impurity such as 3He and Li in the helium coolant and the reflector consisting of the graphite should be kept as low as possible. It was found that the capacity of the purification system for filtering the impurities directly from the coolant will be the important design parameter.

The current interruption method is considered to be an efficient way of measuring the resistance of a fuel cell. In this study, the ohmic area specific resistances (ASRs) of polymer electrolyte fuel cells with different types of bipolar plates were evaluated using the current interruption method. The ohmic ASRs of both a fuel cell with graphite bipolar plates and a fuel cell with graphite foil-based assembled bipolar plates decreased as the current density increased. On the other hand, with increasing cell temperature, the ohmic ASRs of a fuel cell with graphite bipolar plates were decreased by a reduction in the proton transport resistance through the membrane, and the ohmic ASRs of a fuel cell with graphite foil-based assembled bipolar plates were increased by the differences in thermal expansion between different components of the bipolar plates.

A simulation procedure which can represent time-dependent nuclear characteristics of TRIGA Mark-III reactor is developed. CITATION, a multi-group diffusion-depletion program, has been utilized as calculational tool. The group structure employed in this study consists of 7 groups: -3-fast and 4-thermal-which is conventionally utilized in TRIGA type reactor analysis. Three-dimensional nuclear characteristics are synthesized by combining results from two-dimensional plane calculation and two-dimensional cylinder calculation, since direct three-dimensional approach is not yet possible. An effort ia made to develope a method which can extract effective zone and group dependent bucklings by neutron diffusion theory rather than conventional zone and/or group independent Ducklings by neutron transport theory, since neutron leakage is quite high for small core such as research reactors. It is turned out that the method developed in this study gives satisfactory results. The calculation is performed under assumptions that all control rods are fully withdrawn, that no samples are inserted in the irradiation holes and that the core is located in the center of the reactor pool. Burnup-dependent variation of core excess reactivity, time dependent change of Xe-135 poisoning and reactivity worth of rotary specimen rack are calculated and compared with operation records. Neutron flux and power distribution as well as neutron spectrum in each irradiation .facility are presented.
The closed water bodies, such as reservoirs and lakes, could be contaminated by an inflow of pollutants in the upstream as well as a stratification caused by seasonal natural phenomena. The vertical circulation particularly plays an important role in reduction of environmental pollutants. The factors of the vertical circulation are the temperature, wind, thermal diffusivity and sunlight. The wind is probably the most significant factor among them. Thus, it is necessary to describe the validation and application of a three-dimensional numerical model of wind-induced circulation in a thermally stratified flow. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model for the thermally stratified flows is presented. The model is conducted in three steps to calculate the velocity components from the momentum equations in x- and y- axis directions, the elevations from the free surface equation and the temperature from the scalar transport equation. Numerical predictions are compared with available analytical solutions for the sloshing free surface movement in a rectangular basin. The numerical results generally show a reasonable agreement with analytical solutions. And the model is applied to the circulation for the wind induced flow in a thermally stratification. Consequently, the developed model is validated by two verifications and phenomena of the internal flow.

Experiments were conducted in a constant-pressure combustion chamber to investigate the effects of hydrocarbon addition on cellular instabilities of syngas-air flames. The measured laminar burning velocities were compared with the predicted results computed using reliable kinetic mechanisms with detailed transport and chemistry. The cellular instabilities that included hydrodynamic and diffusional-thermal instabilities of the hydrocarbon-added syngas-air flames were identified and evaluated. Further, experimentally measured critical Peclet numbers for fuel-lean flames were compared with the predicted results. Experimental results showed that the laminar burning velocities decreased significantly with an increase in the amount of hydrocarbon added in the reactant mixtures. With addition of propane and butane, the propensity for cell formation was significantly diminished whereas the cellular instabilities for methane-added syngas-air flames were not suppressed.

Under the synoptic scale strong westerly winds flowing over the large steep mountains in the eastern coastal region, the strong downslope wind storms such as internal gravity waves should be generated in the lee-side of mountain. Int he daytime as sea breeze circulation induced by meso-scale thermal forcing from sea toward inland confines to the offshore side of coastal sites due to the eastward internal gravity waves. Thus, surface winds near the coastal seas were relatively weaker than those in the open sea or the inland sites. Evidently, two different kinds of atmospheric circulations such as an internal gravity wave circulation with westerly wind and a sea breeze circulation with both easterly wind near the sea surface and westerly in the upper level were apparently produced. Under this situation the atmospheric pollutants at Kangnung city should be trapped by two different circulations in the opposite directions and resulted in the high concentrations of Total Suspended Particles (TSP) and ozone (O3). At night a meso-scale land breeze from land toward the more intensification of westerly winds in the coastal regions. The concentrations of TSP controled by the strong surface winds blowing from the mountain side toward the coastal sea were relatively higher at night than those in the daytime case and the concentrations of O3 due to the downward transport of ozone from the upper atmosphere toward the surface were also much higher at night than during the day. Consequently, the atmospheric pollutant concentrations in the mountainous coastal region under the downslope wind storms were higher than those after and before the occurrences of wind storms.
Production of iodine-131 by neutron activation of tellurium in tellurium dioxide ($TeO_2$) material requires a target that meets the safety requirements. In a radiopharmaceutical production unit, a new lid for a can was designed, which permits tight sealing of the target by using tungsten inert gaswelding. The leakage rate of all prepared targets was assessed using a helium mass spectrometer. The accepted leakage rate is ${\leq}10^{-4}mbr.L/s$, according to the approved safety report related to iodine-131 production in the TRIGA Mark II research reactor (TRIGA: Training, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics). To confirm the resistance of the new design to the irradiation conditions in the TRIGA Mark II research reactor's central thimble, a study of heat effect on the sealed targets for 7 hours in an oven was conducted and the leakage rates were evaluated. The results show that the tightness of the targets is ensured up to $600^{\circ}C$ with the appearance of deformations on lids beyond $450^{\circ}C$. The study of heat transfer through the target was conducted by adopting a one-dimensional approximation, under consideration of the three transfer modes-convection, conduction, and radiation. The quantities of heat generated by gamma and neutron heating were calculated by a validated computational model for the neutronic simulation of the TRIGA Mark II research reactor using the Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code. Using the heat transfer equations according to the three modes of heat transfer, the thermal study of I-131 production by irradiation of the target in the central thimble showed that the temperatures of materials do not exceed the corresponding melting points. To validate this new design, several targets have been irradiated in the central thimble according to a preplanned irradiation program, going from4 hours of irradiation at a power level of 0.5MWup to 35 hours (7 h/d for 5 days a week) at 1.5MW. The results showthat the irradiated targets are tight because no iodine-131 was released in the atmosphere of the reactor building and in the reactor cooling water of the primary circuit.
The interaction between the surface radiation and the mixed convection transport from an isolated thermal source, with a uniform surface heat flux input and located in a rectangular enclosure, is stuied numerically. The enclosure simulates a practical system such an air cooled electric device, where an air-stream flows through the openings on the two vertical walls. The heat source represents an electric component located in such an enclosure. The size of this cavity is $0.1[m]{\times}0.1[m]$. The inlet velocity is assumed as 0.07[m/s] and the inlet temperature is maintained as $27^{\circ}C$. The inflow is kept at a fixed position. Laminar, two dimensional flow is assumed, and the problem lies in the mixed convection regime, governed by buoyancy force and surface readiation. The significant variables include the location of the out-flow opening, of the heat source and the wall emissivity. The basic nature of the resulting interaction betwwn the externally induced air stream and the buoyancy-driven flow generated by the source is investigated. As a result, the best location of the heat source to make the active heat transfer is 0.075[m] from the left wall on the floor. The trends observed are also discussed in terms of heat removal from practical systems such as electric circuitry.

In the process of site selection for a radioactive waste disposal, site characterization must be carried out to obtain input parameters to assess the safety and feasibility of deep geological repository. In this paper, methodologies of site characterization for radioactive waste disposal in Korea were suggested based on foreign cases of site characterization. The IAEA recommends that site characterization for radioactive waste disposal should be performed through stepwise processes, in which the site characterization period is divided into preliminary and detailed stages, in sequence. This methodology was followed by several foreign countries for their geological disposal programs. General properties related to geological environments were obtained at the preliminary site characterization stage; more detailed site characteristics were investigated during the detailed site characterization stage. The results of investigation of geology, hydro-geology, geochemistry, rock mechanics, solute transport and thermal properties at a site have to be combined and constructed in the form of a site descriptive model. Based on this site descriptive model, the site characteristics can be evaluated to assess suitability of site for radioactive waste disposal. According to foreign site characterization cases, 7 or 8 years are expected to be needed for site characterization; however, the time required may increase if the no proper national strategy is provided.
