  • In this study, to increase flame retardation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) in burning, bisphenol A bis(diphenyl phosphate) (BDP), a well known flame retardant containing phosphorous, was reacted on end groups of PET by radical pathway. End-capping mechanism of PET with BDP was suggested and confirmed by spectroscopic and thermal analysis. From 400 MHz $^{31}P$ solid state FT-NMR spectrum of end-capped PET (PET-BDP), phosphorus spectra peak in BDP was found at ca. -20 ppm. Furthermore, P-C bond stretching vibration peaks were found ca. $600cm^{-1}$ in FT-IR spectrums of PET-BDP. These results showed that BDP can be chemically added on end groups of PET by our method. Thermal characteristics of pure PET (pPET) and PET-BDP were measured and evaluated by TGA analysis. There was not significant changes in thermal characteristics of PET-BDP compared to that of pPET.

  • Fluid temperature fluctuations in a mixing tee pipe were numerically analyzed by LES model in order to clarify internal turbulent flows and to develope an evaluation method for high-cycle thermal fatigue. Hot and cold water with an temperature difference $40^{\circ}C$ were supplied to the mixing tee. Fluid temperature fluctuations in a mixing tee pipe is analysed by using the computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT, Temperature fluctuations of the fluid and pipe wall measured as the velocity ratio of the flow in the branch pipe to that in the main pipe was varied from 0.05 to 5.0. The power spectrum method was used to evaluate the heat transfer coefficient. The fluid temperature characteristics were dependent on the velocity ratio, rather than the absolute value of the flow velocity. Large fluid temperature fluctuations were occurred near the mixing tee, and the fluctuation temperature frequency was random. The ratios of the measured heat transfer coefficient to that evaluated by Dittus-Boelter's empirical equation were independent of the velocity ratio, The multiplier ratios were about from 4 to 6.

  • Commercially available Chines oriental lacquer was treated to get two fractions, hexane soluble fraction and hexane insoluble fraction. Hexane soluble fraction was subjected to thermal curing process. Films obtained from the lacquer under normal conditions and obtained from thermal curing were compared. The compounds in hexane soluble fraction were copolymerized with 1,6-diisocyanohexane, and toluendiisocyanate(TDI). Films obtained by thermal curing were highly brittle and hydrophobic while the films obtained under normal conditions were hydrophilic. Curing reaction did not occur when oxygen was not available. Some of the major component in the lacquer was isolated by HPLC and UV spectrum of each compound was recorded.

  • In this paper, we present high temperature characteristics of a tunable all-optical filter using fiber Bragg grating(FBG) filter in Ge doped and Ge & B co-doped fiber, including peak reflectivity, bandwidth and various normalized refractive index change with temperature variation. The reflection spectrum of a FBG filter with refractive index change is affected by its thermal stability. Consequently Ge doped FBG tunable filter has a better thermal stability than Ge & B co-doped FBG tunable filter. Also, both FBG tunable filters show good thermal stability up to about $500^{\circ}C$.

  • In this research, we focused on the improvement of cy3 dye's characteristics for LCD color filter. Solubility and thermal stability are main characteristics of dyes for LCD color filter. We performed experiment to change counter cation of cy3 dyes with alkoxy substituent for these purposes. These cy3 dyes (1b~5b) were prepared through the synthetic procedure of three steps. The synthesized new cy3 dyes were charaterized by using NMR, FT-IR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and TGA. These cy3 dyes showed purple color and maximum absorption wavelength (${\lambda}_{max}$) in the range of 578~590 nm in UV/Vis spectrum. We confirmed that solubility and thermal stability of cy3 dyes were dependent on the structure of counter cation. Cy3 dyes with alkoxy substituent have good solubility in organic solvents such as dichloromethane, methanol, and acetone. Especially, Cy3 dye with 4-nitrobenzyl counter cation (5b) gave excellent solubility characteristics.

  • The Degradation mechanism of the ZnO-varistor fabricated with the content of a 3-Composition seed grain is discussed using the method of Thermally Stimulated Current (TSC). The spectra of TSC is measured in the temperature range of -130~270$^{\circ}C$ with a various forming electric fields E$\sub$f/, temperature T$\sub$f/ time tf, and a various rising rate of temperature. It is observed that there are appeared the peaks of ${\alpha}$, ${\alpha}$$_2$, ${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$from high temperature in a TSC spectrum. It seems that ${\alpha}$$_1$ peak is due to thermal depolarization of donor ions forming the space charge in the depletion layer, and ${\alpha}$$_2$peak is due to the detrapping of trapped electrons in deep trap level of intergranular layer, and ${\beta}$ peak is due to the thermal exciting of carrier existing in the donor level of grain itself, and ${\gamma}$ peak is due to the thermal exciting of trapped carrier in all shallow trap site randomly distributed in the inner of sample and/or a intrinsic impurity existing in it.

  • Partial discharge (PD) detection plays a major role in the life time assessment of liquid insulation in power transformers. Many research works are being carried out to replace conventional mineral oil insulation in transformers by vegetable oils. It is necessary to understand the PD characteristics of vegetable oils before recommending them as an alternate for mineral oil. In this paper, the breakdown strength and PD characteristics of palm and corn oil were investigated in both unaged and thermally aged conditions. Laboratory experiments were performed as per IEC test procedures. PD signals were measured using wide band detection system. Phase resolved PD pattern of vegetable oils and mineral oil were compared. Effect of increase in voltage stress on the PD pattern of palm and corn oil were studied. Time and frequency domain analysis of PD pulses at needle-plane electrode configuration was carried out. Statistical analysis of PD pattern i.e. skewness and shape parameter variations with respect to applied thermal stress were also carried out. From the results, it is observed that palm and corn oils have better breakdown strength and PD characteristics even under long-term thermal stress and hence they can be used for power transformer applications.

  • Various kinds of systems, that can do target recognition and position detection simultaneously by using infrared sensing detectors, have been developed. In this paper, the detection system TRSS (Thermal target Recognition by Spiral Scanning) adopts linear array shaped uncooled IR detector and uses spiral type fast scanning method for relative position detection of target objects, which radiate an IR region wavelength spectrum. It can detect thermal energy radiating from a 9 m-size target object as far as 200 m distance. And the maximum field of a detector is fully filled with the same size of target object at the minimum approaching distance 50 m. We investigate two types of lens systems. One is a singlet lens and the other is a doublet lens system. Every system includes one aspheric surface and free positioned aperture stop. Many designs of F/1.5 system with ${\pm}5.2^{\circ}$ field at the Efl=20, 30 mm conditions for single element and double elements lens system respectively are compared in their resolution performance [MTF] according to the aspheric surface and stop position changing on their optimization process. Optimum design is established including mechanical boundary conditions and manufacturing considerations.

  • As part of the $AP1000^{TM}$ pressurized water reactor design certification program, a series of integral systems tests of the nuclear steam supply system was performed at the APEX-1000 test facility at Oregon State University. These tests provided data necessary to validate Westinghouse safety analysis computer codes for AP1000 applications. In addition, the tests provided the opportunity to investigate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena expected to be important in AP1000 small-break loss of coolant accidents (SBLOCAs). The APEX-1000 facility is a 1/4-scale pressure and 1/4-scale height simulation of the AP1000 nuclear steam supply system and passive safety features. A series of eleven tests was performed in the APEX-1000 facility as part of a U.S. Department of Energy contract. In all, four SBLOCA tests representing a spectrum of break sizes and locations were simulated along with tests to study specific phenomena of interest. The focus of this paper is the SBLOCA tests. The key thermal-hydraulic phenomena simulated in the APEX-1000 tests, and the performance and interactions of the passive safety-related systems that can be investigated through the APEX-1000 facility, are emphasized. The APEX-1000 tests demonstrate that the AP1000 passive safety-related systems successfully combine to provide a continuous removal of core decay heat and the reactor core remains covered with considerable margin for all small-break LOCA events.

  • We report X-ray timing and spectral properties of the pulsar PSR J0205+6449 measured using NuSTAR and Chandra observatories. We measure the pulsar's rotation frequency ν = 15.20102357(9) s-1 and its derivative $\dot{\nu}=-4.5(1){\times}10^{-11}\;s^{-2}$ during the observation period, and model the 2-30 keV on-pulse spectrum of the pulsar with a power law having a photon index Γpsr = 1.07 ± 0.16 and a 2-30 keV flux F2-30 keV = 7.3±0.6 × 10-13 erg cm-2 s-1. The Chandra 0.5-10 keV data are analyzed for an investigation of the pulsar's thermal emission properties. We use thermal and non-thermal emission models to fit the Chandra spectra and infer the surface temperature T∞ and luminosity Lth of the neutron star to be T∞ = 0.5 - 0.8 MK and Lth = 1 - 5 × 1032 erg s-1. This agrees with previous results which indicated that PSR J0205+6449 has a low surface temperature and luminosity for its age of 800-5600 yrs.
